Moss p. 193 ”This edition is very rare and seldom found complete”.This is the fourth part of Aldus’s five volume set of Livy in 8vo which also contains Lucius Florus and Polybios, ”Polybii historiarum libri qvinqve in latiam conversi linguam, Nicolao Perotto interprete.” With the blank leaf 68 and the last leaf with the Aldine printer’s device, the anchor. Livius is in the first pagination, Lucius Florus on ll. 1-67 in the second and the five books of Polybios on ll. 69-310. Polybios is edited with a septarate preface by Giovanni Francesco Torresani and an introduction by the translator Nicoló Perotti (1429-80).The first part of Aldus’ Livius edition, ”Titi Liuii Patauini Decas prima”, was published in 1518, the second, Titi Liuii Patauini Decas tertia” in 1519, the third ”Titi Liuii Patauini Decas quarta” in 1520, and the fifth and final part in 1533. The editor to this important edition was Giovanni Francesco Torresani, the son of Aldus Manutius’ business partner Andreas Torresani of Asola. In the preface to the first part Giovanni Francesco complains about the counterfeit edition being published in Florence by the Giunti.

Dessa två delar om Uppland var allt som utkom av riksantikvarie Johan Peringskiölds stort upplagda ”Swea och Götha minnings-merken”, tänkt att beskriva hela landets minnesmärken och sevärdheter. De har fortfarande ett bestående värde då flera av de avbildade sevärdheterna idag är försvunna. Det gäller bl.a. ett stort antal runstenar men även inventarier i Uppsala domkyrka som förstördes vid branden 1702. Den första delen, som beskriver Vaksala och Gamla Uppsala med dess fornminnen, har parallelltext på svenska och latin medan den andra, ”Monumenta Ullerakeriensa” och som huvudsakligen behandlar Uppsala och dess domkyrka, är enbart på svenska - trots titeln. De flesta av de fina planscherna är graverade av Truls Arwidsson.

The wood-cut illustration are after the edition printed by Giolito in Venice 1547. Several editions were published during the 16th century.

First edition, printed by Isaac Elzevir, of the Dutch philologist, lawyer and diplomat Jan Rutgers’ (1589-1625) main philological work, with a printed dedication to Gustavus Adolphus of Sweden (Gustav II Adolf). Rutgers studied in his youth under Gerhard Johann Vossius and was in 1605 sent to Leiden to study philology under J. J. Scaliger and Daniel Heinsius and in 1611 to France, where he also managed to take a law degree. He returned to Holland in 1613 to enter the legal profession but came into contact with the Swedish ambassador to the States General Jacob van Dijck. van Dijck was entrusted with the task of finding staff for the growing Swedish administration and he suggested that Rutgers should follow him to Sweden. In Sweden Rutgers was appointed court councillor by Gustavus Adolphus in 1614 and most of his time was going to be spent as a diplomat, and he played a central role in Swedish foreign politics in this crucial period. He was used as Swedish representative in the Dutch Republic on several occaisons and as an emissary to the North German princes. His most dramatic mission was that to Prague in 1620, from where he reported in a series of letters on the Bohemian adventure of Elector Palatine Frederick V. His correspondance with the Swedish chancellor Axel Oxenstierna has recently been published.”Variarum lectionum libri sex” contains his lectures and comments on several classical authors both Greek and Latin. It also includes a poem by Hugo Grotius to Rutgers. His work on Horace ”Lectiones Venusinae” was not published until 1699 and his ”Glossarium graecum ad Oppianum” in 1719. His poems were published by Nicolas Heinsius in 1653 together with an autobiograhy written in 1625.

Slightly defective on top of spine and with minor worm holes, rear board with a small hole. VD16 M 1267 resp. S 6177. Adams S1036 for the second work. The first work by Martino de Garati also contains ”Disputatio de revocatione feudi alienati” by Johannes de Anania. Martino Garati or Martinus de Garatis (1383-1453) was a jurist and economist, maybe most famous for his ”Tractacus de monetis” (1518). ”Speculum feudorum” by Claude de Seyssel was first published in Milan 1508. Claude de Seyssel (dead 1520) was a jurist and humanist from Savoy. He became a counsellor to King Louis XII of France in 1499, and was sent with embassies to Italy and England. He praised both the king Louis XII and monarchy as such, which he believed to be the best form of power. He also discussed social classes and his ideas were very influential in the 16th century. ”Speculum feudorum” was his main legal work, and it provided a thorough treatment of feudal law, which he considered of the greatest ”utility and necessity” for kingdoms, duchies, cities, provinces, castles and towns (Rebecca Boone ”War, Domination, and the Monarchy of France” p. 31).

Den innehåller även en avhandling av Hannes Finnsson, ”Dissertatio historica-litteraria de speculo regali” (s. ix-lxx). Den danska versionen är utförd av Jón Eiríksson. Utgivningen skedde av sällskapet ”Hid ósynilega félag”, som hade grundats 1760. Detta var dock den enda publikationen som utkom. ”Konungs skuggsjá” är ett norskt arbete, skrivet omkring 1250, och är en praktisk samhällslära, en furstespegel, som i det bevarade stycket vänder sig till köpmän och kungens hird. Ursprungligen fanns även stycken för det andliga ståndet och bönderna, men de har inte bevarats. Den har troligen kommit till som en lärobok för den blivande kung Magnus Lagaböter (1238-80). Johan Valentin Broberg (1825-87) var bokintresserade läkare och var bl.a. verksam som bibliotekarie vid Karolinska institetet. Han var Ledamot av både Svenska läkaresällskapet och av Svenska fornskriftsällskapet.

Ley, Rockets, Missiles, and Space Travel (1959), p. 506: ”One of the classical works of space travel.” First edition, second issue. First issued in blue illustrated wrappers, the book failed to sell in significant numbers, perhaps partly due to its highly theoretical content and the fact that rockets large enough to carry objects into space was still an abstraction in the mid 1920s. The rest of the edition was later reissued with the plain printed wrappers present on this copy. A total of 1500 copies were printed and both issues are now rare.Walter Hohmann (1880-1945) was born in Hardheim, Germany, and lived in South Africa for part of his youth, during which time he developed an interest for astronomy as he studied the southern constellations together with his father. He graduated from the Technical University of Munich in 1904 and received his Ph.D. from the RTWH Achen University in 1920. Hohmann spent his career working as an engineer and a city planner in Vienna, Hanover and Breslau (Wroclaw), before settling in Essen. In his spare time he revived his interest in astronomy and began to give serious thought to the problem of interplanetary flight. A key element, he discovered, was fuel-efficiency, which eventually led him to calculate and present, in the present work, what is now known as the ”Hohmann transfer orbit”, an orbital manouver using only two engine impulses to move a spacecraft between two coplanar orbits. The publication led to his involvement in the Verein für Raumschiffahrt, a German society of amateurs propagating rocket development and space flight. However, the increased focus on the use of rockets as weapons during the Nazi era led to Hohmann’s disinvolvement from rocketry, as he only wanted to contribute to its peaceful uses.Perhaps a good measure of the importance of ”Die Erreichbarkeit der Himmelskörper” is that an English translation entitled ”The attainability of heavenly bodies” was published by NASA in 1960. For many years the ”Hohmann transfer orbit” was believed to be the most fuel-efficient way to - for example - move a satellite from a lower to a higher orbit, until a more complicated but even more efficient approach, called the ”bielliptic transfer”, was developed. Hohmann also took an interest in many other aspects of spaceflight and proposed, among other things, a separate landing module for a spacecraft travelling to the moon. The latter idea was, as we know today, followed through by the American Apollo project in the 1960s.

Somewhat worn early 19th century half calf, richly gilt spines with red labels and marbled board papers. Four volumes. This fine work on Switzerland with a total of one large map and 36 folding plates, several with town views but also on minerals and fossils is a compilation made by Johann Georg Altmann (1695-1758), and is based on the earlier works by Abraham Ruchats (1680-1750) and Abraham Stanyans (1669-1732). The compilation was first published in 1730.

Fine copy of the new, revised and expanded edition of Campbell’s Lives made by the learned British physician John Berkenhout (1730-91). The six folding maps are by John Lodge (1735-96) and depicts Europe, Asia, Africa, South America, North America and the West Indies. Inserted in the historical narrative and also several memoires, in part one memoires of Sir Walter Raleigh, in part two of Admiral Montague and General Monk etc.John Campbell (1708-75) was a very succesul Scotish author of historical works, according to Samel Johnson ”the richest author that ever grazed the common of literature”. His ”Lives of the Admirals, and other Eminent British Seamen” was first publised in 1742 to 1744. A new edition was published in 1785.

Ekströms (1781-1859) beskrivning över Mörkö, som han skrev på uppdrag av Nils Bonde, hade ambitionen att täcka allt. Öns naturalhistoria upptar två tredjedelar av texten, med en rik beskrivning av bl.a. insektsfloran, men beskrivningen innehåller även anekdoter och folkloristik om allmogens vidskeplighet m.m. Den blev en stor framgång när den utkom 1828. Gunnar Brusewitz frågar sig (i Björnjägare och fjärilsmålare) retoriskt om "...någon författare kommit närmare det linneanska idealet för en topografisk skildring än pastorn på Mörkö". Den handkolorerade planschen föreställer ett par i sockendräkt.

Första upplagan av Olof von Dalins klassiska svenska historia som brukar kallas för det första ”moderna” allmänna svenska historieverket, och som tidsmässigt sträcker sig fram till och med Karl IX. Dalin (1708-63) bryter här mot den tidigare svenska historieskrivningen, framförallt genom elegansen och lättheten i framställningen men även genom att med den nya ”vattuminskningsteorin” korta ned Sveriges historia med åtskilliga tusen år jämfört med den tidigare rudbeckianska historieskrivningen. Metodiskt var han dock ingen förnyare. De graverade vinjetterna är utförda av Jean Eric Rehn och Per Gustaf Floding. Friherre Fredrik Philip Klingspor (1761-1832) var bl.a. ståthållare på Stockholm slott och stor konstvän och själv duktig miniatyrmålare. Hans stora bibliotek på över 2000 nummer såldes på auktion 9 april 1823. Han samlade därefter ihop en ny samling, som såldes efter hans död. Hans böcker är ofta inbundna i band som dessa.

Marmorerat linneband, ryggen med brun skinnetikett (G. Hedberg). Ur Thore Virgins bibliotek, med hans namnteckning daterad 1928 och superexlibris på frampärmen, och ur Per S. Ridderstads, med hans namnteckning. Collijn 461f. Utgiven av Johannes Bureus med fina typografiska detaljer. ”Konnunga styrilse” är en medeltida furstespegel, dvs en uppfostringslära för en ung kung, och eventuellt författad för Magnus Eriksson ca 1330. Författaren är okänd och gissningar har gjorts på både Brynolf Algotson och Philippus Ragvaldi, men troligen är det en bearbetning av den italienska teologen och författaren Colonnas ”De regimine principum”. Manuskriptet kom till Bureus via Johan Skytte men stammar sannolikt ursprungligen från Vadstena kloster. Manuskript är idag försvunnet och tidigare har dess äkthet ifrågasatts men i och med fyndet av det så kallade ”Vadstenafragmentet” i Helsingfors senatsarkiv 1867 har dock verkets äkthet bestyrkts. I språkligt hänseende är denna rättsurkund av oskattbart värde och Henrik Schück har kallat Bureus utgåva för ”vår första egentliga textedition”. En ny upplaga trycktes 1650 och en ny edition utgavs av Schefferus år 1669. Exemplaret såldes på den första Thore Virgin-auktionen, där felaktigt kallad pappband (Libris 1975, nummer 176).

Rimkrönikan om det norska helgonet Olav den Helige, Olav Haraldson, (†1030), upptar sidorna 1-78. Därefter följer 15 handlingar rörande Sverige och Norge för åren 1441 till 1482, Erasmus Ludwigssons förteckning över Norges biskopsdömen, slott, fästen och gårdar, samt slutligen några stadgar och brev rörande Jämtland. Det graverade titelbladet föreställer St. Olofs beläte efter en träskulptur från 1500-talet i Jumkils kyrka i Uppland. Det utgivna manuskriptet hade Hadorph funnit hos handskriftsamlaren Claes Rålamb, till vilken boken även är dedicerad. Texten med "Sankt Olavs saga" på rim är en bearbetning och översättning av Snorre Sturlasons "Olaf den heliges saga" och är gjord vid mitten av 1400-talet. Manuskriftet, som nu är försvunnet, antas ha kommit till Vadstena som en gåva från birgittinklostret Munkalif i Bergen.

First edition of this important work on organic analysis and which is a ”... transition between the old and new methods of analysis, represented by a work of Nees von Esenbeck, Bischof and Rothe, "Die Entwickelung der Pflanzensubstanz", Erlangen, 1819, a rare book which is otherwise of considerable interest in the history of plant chemistry. This contains tables, from which the chemical formulae may be deduced from the results of distillation analyses, containing 981 'complexions' of the five binary compounds of oxygen, hydrogen and carbon, namely, water, carbonic oxide, carbonic acid, olefiant gas and marsh gas.” (History of Organic Analysis, in ”Nature” 134 (1934), page 95.) Christian Gottfried Daniel Nees von Esenbeck (1776-1858) was a German nature-philosopher, physician and botanist, president of the Leopoldina and professor if botany at Erlangen, Bonn and finally in Breslau. Carl Gustav Bischof (1792-1870) was a chemist and in 1819 appointed to the position of an extra-ordinary professor of chemistry at Bonn, and in 1822 to that of a full professor. Heinrich August Rothe (1773-1842) was a mathematician and professor in Erlangen. The work consists partly of letters between the three scientist on the subject.

First edition of the most important work by the Swedish botanist and mycologist Elias Magnus Fries (1794-1878), one of the founders of taxonomic mycologi, with his large systematic classification of fungi. Nearly 5000 species are described by Fries in these four volumes, and his fame today rests mainly on this intimate knowledge of the fungal species and his naming of them. His general classification however, is now of minor importance. The general index in the third part, also covering the Elenchus is made by A. E. Lindblom. Part one and two were later issued in a Titelauflage, with the imprint changed to Greifswald. Fine provenance from Elias M. Fries’ descendant Nils Fries (1912-94), also professor of botany at the university of Uppsala.

Later edition of Polemann’s ”Novum lumen medicum” which was first published in Amsterdam 1659. Joachim Polemann was born in Stettin in the 1620’s, probably the son of a physician or apothecary. He was a chemist and a follower of Jacob Böhme as well as of the Dutch chemist and physician Jan Baptist Helmont (1580-1644), himself a disciple of Paracelsus. In this book, as Polemann explains in the dedication to count palatinate Christian August (who also engaged in alchemical experimentation), Polemann wants to provide clarification of the often obscure words of that ”scharffsichtigen Philosophi”, as many physicians of the age were unable to convert Helmont’s teachings into medicinal practice. He was especially concerned with the tincture of copper ”als dessen Krafft die Krancken in ihren Schmertzen und grossen Nöthen erfreuen kan”. Polemann was so successful in this endeavor that he gained notoriety accross Europe as an accomplished chemist. He was known as a great traveller who had even visited ”oriental parts”. He lived in Amsterdam for a long time and from 1663 in London, where he was held in esteem as an alchemical physician sucessfully curing many ailments. Kathrin Pfister, who in the article ”Joachim Polemann – Biographische Notizen zu einem Fachschriftsteller und Alchemiker des 17. Jahrhunderts” has tried to map Polemanns life, says that all traces of him end in Westminster in Strutton ground, in London in 1672.Second edtion of ”De viribus & usu auri & argenti”, which is a little book of instructions on how to cure all manner of diseases and afflictions using carefully prepared powders of gold and silver is possibly originally brought together by a Hungarian doctor, Johannes Puecher. The earlier edition of the little book (Nürnberg, bei Jeremia Dümlern, 1638) spells out the pseudonym ”J. de B.” as Johannes de Bikfai. In a Paracelcian book from 1663 ”Theophrastus Redivivus” there is mention of a ”Johannes alias Bikfai Puecher”, and a ”Johannis Puecher Nobilis Ungari” is named author of a very similar book ”Warhaffter Bericht Von Nutz und Gebrauch deß Hermetischen Gold- und Silber-Pulvers/ Wie auch Silber-Wassers” printed in Ulm in 1648, as well as a small thesis entitled ”Vera relatio de virtute et efficacia pulveris Hermetici et aquae Lunaris, aquae quidem quotidiano usu ultra viginti annos, pulveris vero plusquam decennali experientia in pluribus Germaniae et Ungariae locis, comprobatorum” (Trencsén, 1646).

Contemporary full calf, gilt spine with black label, the label somewhat rubbed. Owner’s signature of Carl Magnus Ehnemark, dated Philadelphia 1823. First American edition, complete with the extra appendix plates. Lever’s standard work was first published in London in 1808. The second was published the same year as this first American. It become during the 19th century published in several new editions, both in London and in America. Bra svensk proveniens. Carl Magnus Ehnemark (1803-74) var sjöofficer och från 1857 svensk sjöminister och konteramiral. För att få erfarenhet tog Ehnemark efter kadettskolan 1821 värvning på en amerikansk brigg och jobbade där upp sig till förste styrman. I samband med denna tjänst befann han sig troligen i Phildadelphia 1823. Efter några år i Sverige tog han sedan värning i franska marinen och deltog 1830 i kriget mot Alger och i belägringen av Lissabon. Åter tillbaka i Sverige gjorde han en snabb karriär, ända till amiral och sjöminister. Som minister tillsatte hans flera utredningar för att höja standarden på den svenska flottan och han initierade studieresor till västra Europa och Amerika för att öka kunskapen om de nya marina tekniska förändringarna.

Årgång II, 1919, består av nummer 1, 3-5, 7, 9-12, 15-19, 22-32. Årgång IV, 1921, består av nummer 5-10, 12-20. Redaktör 1919 var Mathias Westerblom och från augusti 1919 Nils Blees.Den för Estlandsvenskarna viktiga tidningen ”Kustbon” startades 1918 av det politiska partiet Svenska Folkförbundet, och utkom till nummer fem år 1935. Därefter sattes utgivaren Svenska Folkförbundet, liksom alla andra politiska förbund i Estland, ur funktion enligt förordning den 5 mars 1935. Redaktören Nils Blees fortsatte dock att ge ut ”Nya Kustbon” under resten av året. Året därpå 1936 började Svenska Odlingens vänner att ge ut Kustbon (utan prefixet Nya) med oklart slutdatum någon gång under kriget, sannolikt 1939. I början av 1940-talet fängslades och deporterades Mathias Westerblom och Nikolaus Blees, liksom många andra, speciellt skollärare. Ingen av dem kom tillbaka. 1944 började istället Kulturföreningen Svenska odlingens vänner i Sverige att ge ut den nya ”Kustbon. Organ för Estlandssvenskarna i Sverige”.

First edition of Grotius’s thoughts on the authority of the state in religious matters, published postumously. According to the preface the text is based on a manuscript given to the publisher in 1637. Several new editions were published during the 17th and 18th centuries and an English translation was published in 1651, ”Of the authority of the highest powers about sacred things...”. The text was written between 1614 and 1617 and it should be read in the context of Grotius's involvement in the controversy associated with the Oath of Allegiance to James I and the conflict between Remonstrants and critics of the government in the 1610s. In ”De imperio” Grotius uses classical and contemporary sources to argue for government oversight of the churches.
