From the library of Ericsberg, with the book plate of Carl Jedvard Bonde. Blackmer 1361. Like the Blackmer copy and almost all other, this has 15 plates, of which 4 are handcoloured. Navari claims that there should be 17. First and only edition. The famous landscape gardener Pückler-Muskau (1785-1871) travelled in the Levant during several years. The first part deals with Tunis and Malta and part 2 and 3 are devoted to Greece, and is a mixture of facts and fantasy written during his travels in Greece in 1836-37.

Försäljning av Georg Friedrich Niehencks samling av mynt. Niehenck (1678-1752) från Rostock var pastor i Göteborgs tyska församling och en stor myntsamlare. I Svenska Merkurius omtalades 1756 att hans samling på 4270 mynt var till salu för 20.000 daler silvermynt och att den ska ha erbjudits myntkabinetten i Uppsala och Stockholm. 1759 fördes dock samlingen av änkan till Hamburg för att, som synes, säljas på auktion. Redan 1758 ska dock en viss Finlay ha köpt vissa delar av samlingen.

The editor of both works (and author of the Spagyrische Grund-Regeln) was dr. Adam Gottlob Berlich who also published a dissertation on the subject ”Dissertatio inauguralis de medicina universali. Rudolf Wilhelm Crause.” Jena, 1679.Schmieder writes that although the author called himself Monte Snyder, which to him suggests a dutch origin, the author was actually from the Pfalz and his name was Mondschneider. He relates the story that Monte Snyder inherited an alchemical tincture from his relative the doctor Laevinus Lemnius who died in Heidelberg 1568, and that it was with this tincture that Monte Snyder traveled around and performed transmutations, most notably in Vienna in 1660, in the presence of Kaiser Leopold I and in Aachen in 1667, under the inspection of an experienced goldsmith. It is said that as Monte Snyder ran out of his inherited tincture he fell into poverty and died a pauper in Mainz. (Schmieder, Karl Christoph. Geschichte der Alchemie. Halle, 1832. pp. 403ff.)Thorndike writes: ”The work of Johann de Montesnyder on the universal medicine is alchemical rather than medical and is written in German. It discusses such topics and questions as the universal menstruum of all metals and minerals; the magical elements and their reduction to the three principles; wether the universal medicine is to be found in the seven stars, i.e. metals, or just in gold and first matter. [...]Montesnyder had previously composed a work on the Metamorphosis of the Planets (i.e. metals), in the preface to which he mentions a still earlier treatise, De elementis magicis, which I have not seen. The text speaks of three worlds, how to distinguish the hermaphroditish little irrational mineral world from the lunar feminine Gebuhrt, of the double and universal nature of the hermaphroditish microcosm, how the planets serve the monarch of this world, how Mercury, after he triumphs, changes himself into mercury of the philosophers, and many other metaphorical representations of the chemical process.” (Thorndike VIII, p. 355f)

Ferguson II, p. 215-16 for earlier editions. Caillet 8851, note. Duveen p. 481 for other editions. The nice engraved title depicts the author at work in his laboratory. Later edition of the most famous work of the Italian natural philosopher and scientist Giambattista della Porta (or Giovanni Battista Della Porta) (1535-1615). It was first published in 1558 in Naples, consisting then of only four books. It was later expanded, reaching twenty books in 1589. Ferguson writes that Della Porta ”made long journeys in search of natural knowledge, and formed an Academy of the Secrets of Nature in his house at Rome, which was supressed of course. His work is entitled ’Magia Naturalis’ and it is divided into twenty books according to subjects. This is a more comprehensive work than some of his predecessors, but I cannot say that in its contents it is much more sensible. It had its share of popularity, however, passed through many Latin editions, and was translated into all the languages”. Engr. extra title,+ (1),+ (26),+ (2, blanks),+ 356, 359-631,+ (33) pp. Illustrated with 85 large emblematic engravings in text. Title printed in red and black and all pages printed within a frame. The engraved extra title and the half title are both pasted on resp. sides of a fly-leaf, which means that the recto of the half title is hidden and only the verso with ”Erklärung dess Kuppffer-Tituls” is visible. Both titles and the first five leaves with tear in lower margin, dampstain in lower margin, more in the middle, minor spotting and some browning. Contemporary vellum. Owner’s label of Anders Persson. VD17 23:269038A. Landwehr, German emblem books, 228. Praz p. 316. Faber du Faur 597. They all miss the jump in the pagination. The engraved title and the emblems are engraved by Melchior Küsell after drawings by Georg Strauch. Each chapter (Epistel) starts with an engraved emblematic picture with a device in the engraving, followed by a verse, a ”Paraphras”, a ”Nutz und Gebrauch” and finally a sermon and a song. The engravings have also been published seprately.The protestant theologian and philologist Johann Michael Dilherr (1604-69) was first active as professor in theology and history at the University in Jena but moved in 1642 to Nuremberg as professor and rector for the newly opened "Aegidianum" Gymnasium and become soon after also chief pastor at the St. Sebaldus Church. He was appointed city librarian and was close to many members of the Pegnesischer Blumenorden, the literary association in Nuremberg with members like Johann Klay and Sigmund von Birken. ”He was himself a talented poet as well as one of the greatest preachers of his time and an expert on music (Faber du Faur). Dilherr’s library of 8,000 volumes is today preserved at the Regional Church Archive in Nuremberg. Many of his sermons were published together in collections in folio with verses and illustrations.

Almquist, Sveriges bibliografiska litteratur 1375 för avsnittet ”Libellus [...] de scriptoribus rei nummariæ Svethicæ [...]”. Almquist 1379 för Warmholtz. Elias Brenner som brukar kallas den svenska numismatikens fader utgav redan under 1690-talet den första upplagan av ”Thesaurus”. Arbetet är egentligen en illustrerad katalog över hans egen mynt- och medaljsamling, vid denna tid den största i landet. Han var en skicklig miniatyrmålare och tecknade själv ”efter sine veritable originaler” 431 svenska mynt och medaljer, vilka sedan av honom själv och andra graverades eller skars i trä. Brenner fortsatte att samla ända till sin död 1717 och planerande ivrigt en andra upplaga. Denna, som slutligen blev utgiven av Niklas Keder, är större än den första, och försedd med Brenners fina kopparstick. Brenners myntsamling erbjöds först till svenska staten men såldes istället till den engelske köpmannen Thomas Grainger, och sedan vidare till en medlem av huset Demidoff i Ryssland. En senare Demidoff (eller Demidov) skänkte åren 1803 och 1806 Brenners svenska mynt till den numismatiska samlingen i Moskvas universitet. Dessa samlingar övergick efter revolutionen 1917 till Pusjkin-museet i Moskva. Warmholtz arbete är en latinsk översattning, utförd av G. Regnér, av ett sammandrag av numismatikdelen i ”Bibliotheca historica Sueo-Gothica”, och avsedd att vara ett bihang till ”Thesaurus”.

Kjellin, and from the libraries of Christian Hammer and of Rolf G. Norberg with their bookplates. USTC 6038631. Ter Meulen 894. First edition of Grotius’s thoughts on the authority of the state in religious matters, published postumously. According to the preface the text is based on a manuscript given to the publisher in 1637. Several new editions were published during the 17th and 18th centuries and an English translation was published in 1651, ”Of the authority of the highest powers about sacred things...”. The text was written between 1614 and 1617 and it should be read in the context of Grotius's involvement in the controversy associated with the Oath of Allegiance to James I and the conflict between Remonstrants and critics of the government in the 1610s. In ”De imperio” Grotius uses classical and contemporary sources to argue for government oversight of the churches.

Publ. half vellum, spines with handwritten titles, orange board papers, top edges yellow. Three volumes. From the library of Bengt Kyhlberg. Very fine and rare facsimile of the original edition from 1761-1778 in a small subscription edition. The subsciption list gives 78 subscribers. The four parts are here issued in three volumes as the original edition, but the original large folio format is reduced to a more normal folio. The Benedict monk Dom François Bedos de Celles (1709-79) was a master pipe organ builder and his work ”L'Art du Facteur d'Orgues” is the largest and one of the most influential works on organ building, with its plates being re-used in numerous later works.

Very fine dark red morocco, richly gilt spine with raised bands, boards with triple gilt borders and gilt fleurons in corners, richly inner gilt bordures, all edges gilt and with wrappers preserved (Noulhac, stamp-signed on inner front boards). Two volumes, in marbled box with morocco edges. Book plates of Armand Sibien Architect and of H. Grandjean. One of 100 exemplaires ”de grand choix sur papier du Japon et velin du Marais”, this is number 49. With all the 63 illustrations, 21 on separate plates and 42 vignettes, doubled in two different states, one before letters and one after. They are made after Adolphe Lalauze and engraved by Léon Boisson. The French book binder Henri Adrien Noulhac (1866-1931) set up his workshop in Paris in 1894. Specialized initially in plain leather bindings (reliures jansenistes) and copies of 18th-century bindings. By 1900 he had begun to incorporate modest floral emblems into the dentelled fillet borders on his covers.Madame Campan or Jeanne-Louise-Henriette Genêt Campan (1752-1822) was one of Marie Antoinettes closest lady-in-waiting. She remained so up until the French revolution and the storming of the Tuileries Palace by the revolutionaries in 1792. She survived the terror although she lost all her material possessions but made comeback during Napoleon I as a superintendent of the academy at Écouen for the education of orphaned daughters of members of the Légion d'honneur in 1807. Her memoires were first published postumously in 1822.

Tre varianter finns, med olika gravörer. Sjöslaget mellan Sverige under Carl Gustaf Wrangel och Holland under Jacob van Wassenaer av Obdam visas från norr vid inloppet, mellan Helsingborg och Kronborg. I bakgrunden ses Malmö, Landskrona och Köpenhamn. I förgrunden till vänster syns det svenska amiralskeppet Victoria stridande emot det holländska dito Eendracht med Wassenaer ombord. I mitten sjunker det holländska viceamiralskeppet Brederode. Över bilden syns tre porträtt inom av änglar hållna lagerkransar på Carl Gustaf Wrangel, Wassenaer och den holländska viceamiralen Pieter Florisz. Under bilden holländsk text i sex spalter. Holländarna lyckades med segern i detta sjöslag bryta den svenska sjöblockaden av Köpenhamn.

Frontespiserna med charmiga, svenskvänliga sinnesbilder, med bilder tagna från det politiska skeendet och försedda med lämpliga visdomsord, t.ex. nummer 2 med Karl XII med ett lejon bredvid sig forcerande framåt i en sagovagn dragen av två vilda hästar; med devisen ”Frisch gewagt ist halb gewonn”. Träsnittsvinjetten på alla titelbladen visar Karl XII till häst iklädd turkisk dräkt. Mycket ovanlig historisk och politisk journal, som, enligt Warmholtz ”numera fallit i förgätenhet”. Delarna 3-5 är troligen i nytryck eller pirattryck då första sidans paginering i varje del anpassats efter den andra varianten.

First edition of the most important work by the Swedish botanist and mycologist Elias Magnus Fries (1794-1878), one of the founders of taxonomic mycologi, with his large systematic classification of fungi. Nearly 5000 species are described by Fries in these four volumes, and his fame today rests mainly on this intimate knowledge of the fungal species and his naming of them. The French historian and philosopher Guillaume Thomas Raynal (1713-96) gives in this work a harsh criticism of the colonial powers’ treatment of the peoples in Africa and America, and it was higly admired by the contemporary abolitionists and also by the later revolutionaries. It was first published in 1770 and was a hugh success and reprinted several times, the second edition was published in 1774 and reprinted 14 times, a third edition with a much expanded atlas was published in 1780, and also reprinted several times, and a fourth was published in 1820 and reprinted in 1843.

Därefter följer 15 handlingar rörande Sverige och Norge för åren 1441 till 1482, Erasmus Ludwigssons förteckning över Norges biskopsdömen, slott, fästen och gårdar, samt slutligen några stadgar och brev rörande Jämtland. Det graverade titelbladet föreställer St. Olofs beläte efter en träskulptur från 1500-talet i Jumkils kyrka i Uppland. Det utgivna manuskriptet hade Hadorph funnit hos handskriftsamlaren Claes Rålamb, till vilken boken även är dedicerad. Texten med "Sankt Olavs saga" på rim är en bearbetning och översättning av Snorre Sturlasons "Olaf den heliges saga" och är gjord vid mitten av 1400-talet. Manuskriftet, som nu är försvunnet, antas ha kommit till Vadstena som en gåva från birgittinklostret Munkalif i Bergen.

Contemporary full calf, gilt spine with black label, the label somewhat rubbed. Owner’s signature of Carl Magnus Ehnemark, dated Philadelphia 1823. First American edition, complete with the extra appendix plates. Lever’s standard work was first published in London in 1808. The second was published the same year as this first American. It become during the 19th century published in several new editions, both in London and in America. Bra svensk proveniens. Carl Magnus Ehnemark (1803-74) var sjöofficer och från 1857 svensk sjöminister och konteramiral. För att få erfarenhet tog Ehnemark efter kadettskolan 1821 värvning på en amerikansk brigg och jobbade där upp sig till förste styrman. I samband med denna tjänst befann han sig troligen i Phildadelphia 1823. Efter några år i Sverige tog han sedan värning i franska marinen och deltog 1830 i kriget mot Alger och i belägringen av Lissabon. Åter tillbaka i Sverige gjorde han en snabb karriär, ända till amiral och sjöminister. Som minister tillsatte hans flera utredningar för att höja standarden på den svenska flottan och han initierade studieresor till västra Europa och Amerika för att öka kunskapen om de nya marina tekniska förändringarna.

Later edition of Polemann’s ”Novum lumen medicum” which was first published in Amsterdam 1659. Joachim Polemann was born in Stettin in the 1620’s, probably the son of a physician or apothecary. He was a chemist and a follower of Jacob Böhme as well as of the Dutch chemist and physician Jan Baptist Helmont (1580-1644), himself a disciple of Paracelsus. In this book, as Polemann explains in the dedication to count palatinate Christian August (who also engaged in alchemical experimentation), Polemann wants to provide clarification of the often obscure words of that ”scharffsichtigen Philosophi”, as many physicians of the age were unable to convert Helmont’s teachings into medicinal practice. He was especially concerned with the tincture of copper ”als dessen Krafft die Krancken in ihren Schmertzen und grossen Nöthen erfreuen kan”. Polemann was so successful in this endeavor that he gained notoriety accross Europe as an accomplished chemist. He was known as a great traveller who had even visited ”oriental parts”. He lived in Amsterdam for a long time and from 1663 in London, where he was held in esteem as an alchemical physician sucessfully curing many ailments. Kathrin Pfister, who in the article ”Joachim Polemann – Biographische Notizen zu einem Fachschriftsteller und Alchemiker des 17. Jahrhunderts” has tried to map Polemanns life, says that all traces of him end in Westminster in Strutton ground, in London in 1672.Second edtion of ”De viribus & usu auri & argenti”, which is a little book of instructions on how to cure all manner of diseases and afflictions using carefully prepared powders of gold and silver is possibly originally brought together by a Hungarian doctor, Johannes Puecher. The earlier edition of the little book (Nürnberg, bei Jeremia Dümlern, 1638) spells out the pseudonym ”J. de B.” as Johannes de Bikfai. In a Paracelcian book from 1663 ”Theophrastus Redivivus” there is mention of a ”Johannes alias Bikfai Puecher”, and a ”Johannis Puecher Nobilis Ungari” is named author of a very similar book ”Warhaffter Bericht Von Nutz und Gebrauch deß Hermetischen Gold- und Silber-Pulvers/ Wie auch Silber-Wassers” printed in Ulm in 1648, as well as a small thesis entitled ”Vera relatio de virtute et efficacia pulveris Hermetici et aquae Lunaris, aquae quidem quotidiano usu ultra viginti annos, pulveris vero plusquam decennali experientia in pluribus Germaniae et Ungariae locis, comprobatorum” (Trencsén, 1646).
