Den främre linjen driver tillbaka svenskarna, bland vilka Karl XII syns på sin bår. Borta i fonden syns övergivna redutter och till vänster en stad. I förgrunden galopperar tsar Peter med en liten sabel i handen, åtföljd av en kavallerieskort, som hugger sig igenom en skara svenska ryttare. Under bilden rysk text i tre rader. Den ryske hovmålaren Pierre-Denis Martin le Jeune (1663-1742) målade ett antal stora bataljmålningar över ryska segrar i stora nordiska kriget, däribland två stycken över slaget vid Poltava, vilka graverades av Charles Simonneau (1645-1728) resp. N. M. Larmessain. Denna av Charles Simonneau visar det slutliga svenska nederlaget på den tredje dagen, då de slagna svenska regementerna flydde mot floden Perevolotjna och gav upp. På Eremitaget finns denna gravyr kolorerad.

Renouard, Bibliotheque d'un Amateur, 1819, vol. 4, Histoire p. 103. ”The Renouard-Gosford-Derby-copy”, one of the few copies of the largest of the three sizes of paper. ”Exemplaire sur le plus grand des hors papiers qui ont été trés de cette Edition” (Renouard).Sold as number 1405 in the ”Catalogue of a Distinguished Portion of the Choice, Curious and Splendid Library of Monsieur Renouard” 1834, and bought by the famous firm of Payne and Foss. They played a prominent part in building great English libraries in the begining of the 19th century, and among their clients was also Archibald Acheson, the third Earl of Gosford (1806-64). He built a large and according to De Ricci extremely beautiful library at the Gosford Castle in Ireland. His library was sold in 1878 to the London Bookseller James Toovey. But this copy must have passed on earlier to the 14th Earl of Derby, Edward George Geoffrey Smith-Stanley (1799–1869), who was an English statesman, Chief Secretary for Ireland a period, three times First Lord of the Treasury, Chancellor of Oxford University etc. The library of the Earls of Derby at Knowsley was largely sold by auction at Christies in four sales in 1953 and 1954. It was at the sale probably bought by an antiquarian bookseller from whose catalogue Bengt Lassen bought it.The second and best of the two Pitiscus’ editions of Suetonius. The first was published in 8vo in 1690. Samuel Pitiscus gives in his commentaries extracts from nearly 900 ancient and modern authors, and among the three indexes there is an Index editionum. The edition also contains ”Monumentum Ancyranum”, with comments by Casaubon and Johannes Gronovius. Samuel Pitiscus (1637-1727), nephew of the famous Bartholomaeus Pitiscus, was a Dutch historian and classicist from Zutphen. He studied theology in Deventer and was later appointed headmaster of the Latin school in Zutphen. Bengt Lassen (1908-74) var hovrättsråd och åren 1953-73 VD för Norstedts förlag. Han var en duktig latinist och hade en fin samling romerska författare. Han figurerar i bakgrunden i Maria Langs deckare ”Mördarens bok”.

Both parts were published in 10 fasciculus each and printed in 200 copies. Fasc. 2-10 of volume two (1878-84) were posthumously edited by Elias’ sons Th. M. and Robert Fries, who in the preface to part two gives a biographical sketch of Elias Fries (in latin). A fine set in original form of Elias Fries’ magnificent last work, with colour plates of not before depicted species of Hymenomycetes (a today obsolete taxonomic class belonging to the subgroup Agaricomycotina) collected by Fries at the Kungl. Riksmuseet in Stockholm. Most of the depicted species were also described by Fries in his ”Monographia Hymenomycetum Sueciae” (1857). This class - however obsolete - contains most of the familiar fungi! The plates are after drawings of Elias Fries and lithographed mainly by E. Pettersson and P. Åkerlund. Fine provenance from Elias M. Fries’ descendant Nils Fries (1912-94), also professor of botany at the university of Uppsala.

From the library of Nils Fries, with his bookplate. Stafleu 14780. Nissen 1976. First edition of this important fore-runner of Linnaeus. The French botanist Joseph Pitton de Tournefort (1656-1708) made in this work a clear distinction between genus and species, and he was able to sort his 7000 plant species into 700-plus genera, making classification easier and preparing the way for Linnaeus. ”The Élémens and the Institutiones are milestones in the history of taxonomy not only for the conceptual advances they reflect but also for the wholly new form in which they are cast. The text of the Élémens is in French, accompanied by a technical dictionary, and it is closely related to Aubriet's illustrations. The result is a well-integrated and easily accessible whole that could not fail to produce a sensation. Thus, although Tournefort's work disregarded the major biological discoveries of the seventeenth century, within its self-imposed limits it clearly outlined the avenues of study that led to the modern system of classification” (DSB). The fine engravings are made by Claude Aubriet (1655-1742). The Latin edition ”Institutiones rei Herbariae” was published in 1700.

Contemporary blind-stamped pigskin over wooden boards, spine with raised bands, handwritten title on the top compartment and an old paper label, ”A. 142”, on the lower, boards with rolled decor, brass clad corners and middle knobs, blue edges and two preserved decorated brass clasps. The 10 brass corners and middle knobs are from the 15th century, and the brass corners with corrupt latin texts. Fine copy of the second part of the famous Antwerp Polyglot Bible by Plantin, edited by Benedictus Arias Montanus. This part contains the books of Joshua, Judges, Ruth, Samuel 1-2, Kings 1-2 and Paralipomenon. The fine engraved frontispiece is made by Jan Wierix (1549-1918) and shows the Israelites Crossing the River Jordan transporting the Ark of the Covenant as described in Joshua 3:13-17.The Biblia Regia – so called because it was financed by the king of Spain Philip II – was published by Christopher Plantin (1520–89). It comprises eight volumes with parallel texts in Hebrew, Greek, Chaldean and Latin translations and was a great achievement by the Plantin firm. It took five years, between 1568 and 1573, to produce and it was printed in 1200 copies on four different kinds of paper and 12 copies on vellum. Several of the 1200 copies were however lost at sea on route from the Netherlands to Spain (Bekka p. 16). The chief editor of the Polyglot and also acting as the Philip’s orthodox supervisor was the polymath Benito Arias Montano (1527-98) and among his chief assistants were Plantin’s son-in-law and successor Franciscus Raphelengius and several other orientalists. Theologians at the University of Louvain assisted by comparing numerous manuscripts and printed editions to determine what the correct text for the Bible should be. Because of it its high production costs, its demands on typographical expertise, its concentration of scholarly and editorial skills it is considered one of the greatest single printing enterprises of the sixteenth century. Volume 1-4 contain the Old Testament, volume 5 the New Testament and volume 6-8 supplements.The large library of the Carthusian monastry at Buxheim ”...zu Beginn des 16. Jahrhunderts bereits zu den bedeutendsten Klosterbibliotheken Europas...” was sold at auctions in 1883-84, the present volume coming from a complete set of the library.

Praktfullt rött samtida marokängband, rikt guldornerad rygg med upphöjda bind, franska liljan i fälten och med titeln i guld, pärmarna mycket rikt guldornerade, med intrikat bandväv omgiven av blommor och punkter och med franska liljor i hörnen inom ramverk, i mitten tre vertikala fält, det mellersta och största med Marie Leszczyńskas pärmstämpel och med hennes monogram i de båda mindre, inre bordure och med helt guldsnitt. Liten skada i främre nedre hörn. Med Victor von Stedingks exlibris i båda varianterna. Jmf Olivier 2507:1 för ett exemplar av densamma för 1729. Presentationsexemplar eventuellt bundet av Antoine Michel Padeloup till drottning Marie Leszczyńska, maka till Ludvig XV. Marie Leszczyńska (1703-68) var dotter till den av Karl XII tillsatta kungen av Polen Stanisław I Leszczyński. Efter att denne blivit avsatt tillbringade familjen en tid i Sverige och sedan i Zweibrücken. År 1725 vigdes hon med Ludvig XV och blev drottning av Frankrike. Den årliga officiella liturgiska handboken för påskveckan är sammanställd av Abbé de Bellegarde. Frontespiesen, titelbladet och planscherna är graverade av J. B. Scotin efter A. Humblot.

Litet maskhål i överkant på titelbladet, fuktränder inledningsvis, återkommande i överkant, enstaka fläckar, en större s. 399. Tryckåret skrivet med bläck på titelbladet. Nött samtida skinnband över träpärmar, ryggen med fyra upphöjda bind och samtida pappersetikett, rikt blindpräglade pärmar, med rester av spännen. Frampärmens insida med äldre bläckanteckningar, delvis på svenska. Sista sidan med ett handskrivet ”H” och en stjärna i bläck. På främre pärmen senare tilltryckt C N D och årtalet 1651. Detta är en separatutgåva av Danmarksdelen av första upplagan av Krantz viktiga krönika om de nordiska länderna, med nytt titelblad och med Fredrik III:s vapen flyttat från s. (8) till titelsidan. Det är ett postumt arbete, skrivet 1504. Utgivaren Henrich van Eppendorf fann Krantz latinska manuskript i Köln och översatte det till tyska. I samlingsverket återfinns även Sverige och Norge, med egna titelblad (Danmark har inget separat titelblad i den gemensamma utgåvan). Året efter denna utgåva påbörjade Eppendorf utgivandet av den latinska originaltexten, ”Chronica regnorum Aquilonarum, Daniæm, Suetiæ, Norvegiæ”, vilken tryckes åren 1546-48. Förbättrade latinska utgåvor gavs sedan ut av Johannes Wolfius 1575 och 1583. Albert Krantz (1448-1517) var dekanus vid katedralen i Hamburg och lärd historiker och teolog. Hans verk om de nordiska länderna hade stor betydelse för den svenska göticistiska historieskrivningen, inte minst för Johannes Magnus, och föreställningen att goterna och goternas krigståg var en del av den svenska historien. Överhuvudtaget var Krantz inriktad på de germanska stammarnas historia, med verk om vandalernas historia (utgivet 1519) och saxarnas (1520), skrivna på renässanshumanistiskt manér, med retorisk utsmyckning efter de antika historikerna.

Enligt Henrik Klemming rådde auktionsdagen sådan snöyra i Uppsala att många, både anbud och spekulanter, inte kunde komma fram till auktionen i tid. Böckerna såldes ofta mycket billigt.

(Köpenhamn, 1761-62.) Tvär folio. 60 grav. planscher, varav en stor utvikbar. Den utvikbara vyn över Köpenhamn med liten reva i nedre veck. Lätt nött samtida marmorerat pappband, ryggen med tryckt pappersetikett. Pärmarna med lätta stänk. Från Ericsbergs bibliotek med Carl Jedvard Bondes exlibris. Bibl. danica II, sp. 603. Ehrencron-Müller II, 112. Med de sällsynta planscherna till andra delen! Titelbladet till första delen och 4 blad med förord av Jacob Langebek saknas. Med alla de 50 planscher på danska slott och städer som blev utgivna till första delen samt de tio extra som var allt som utkom till andra delen. Inget titelblad gjordes till den andra. Trots att det aldrig blev färdigställt är det ändå ett av de viktigaste danska topografiska arbetena. Del ett som omfattar Själland med 50 planscher var allt som blev färdigställt. Av del två, som skulle omfatta Fyn, blev endast 10 av planerade 88 planscher graverade. Dessa tio är mer sällsynta men återfinns här. Salvatore de Marco was one of the three most prominent publishers of the early neapolitan canzonas, he is also credited as composer of one of the songs. Contains 20 songs by the composer Pietro Labriola (1820-1900), three by Francesco Ruggi, two by Battista, three by Eduardo de Quartery, and with songs by several others. This charming collection includes versions of ”Lo guarracino”, ”Te voglio bene assaje” and a very early imprint of the famous ”Santa Lucia” (”Vera barcarola populare il barcajuola di Santa Lucia”) and many more. These canzone imprints by Marco are rare; Biblioteca dell'Accademia filarmonica records 10 of them (dated 185?), Biblioteca nazionale Vittorio Emanuele III records 20.

Herman Hamelmann (1526-95) var luthersk teolog och historiker. Efter hans död fortsattes arbetet och utgavs av Anton Hering och Hermann Neuwald. Presentexemplar (?) med det Oldenburgsk-Delmenthorska vapnet svartpräglat inom ram på båda pärmarna. Namnteckningen kan tillhöra Catharine Rantzau (1590-1655) som gifte sig 1607 med Henrik Rantzau. Understrykningarna och anteckningarna i slutet rör Daniel Rantzau och det Nordiska sjuårskriget mellan Sverige och Danmark. Släkten Rantzau härstammar från Holstein och Daniel Rantzau (1529-69) ledde de danska trupperna under kriget.

Volume two differ slightly, boards with the crucification in a middle stamp surrounded by the Seven Virtues and biblical figures and finally flower patterns, spine with handwritten title. Fine set, even if they are from two different editions and differ in provenance, of Froben’s edition of Chrysostomos (Chrysostome) in the latin translation of Erasmus of Rotterdam. All parts in the second edition from 1530 except part three (volume two) which is in the fourth edition from 1558. They were first published in 1517. Part one contains Erasmus’ Life of Chrysostom, ”Vita Divi Ioannis Chrysostomi ex historiae quam Tripartitam vocant libro decimo magna ex parte concinnata, per Des. Erasmum Roterodamum”.Johannes Chrysostomus, (c. 347-407) was one of the great Church Fathers, especially important for the Greek Orthodox church were he early became a saint. He was born in Antiochia where he also studied and where he gained large popularity thanks to his many public sermons. From 397 he served as archbishop of Constantinople where he stirred up much controvery and ended up in exile. Around 700 sermons and 246 letters, plus biblical commentaries etc. have survived and are still studied. He is known for his preachings and public speakings and for his many homilies, both over the New and the Old Testament, and for his care for the poor and the needy. Today he is perhaps most known for his strongly anti-Jewish views in sermons gathered as ”Adversus Judaeos” and his standing against homosexuality. The early owner of volume one and three was probably Christoph Wertwein (c. 1512-1553) from Pforzheim, who was a theologian and priest. He was court preacher and confessor to king Ferdinand (later Emperor Ferdinand I) and in 1552 he was appointed bishop in Vienna but shortly afterwards he suddenly died in a riding accident.

He was however troublesome and when Napoleon merged Holland with France in 1810 Louis abdicated. He settled as comte de Saint-Leu in Graz and after 1815 he lived in Italy writing historical works. He is father to Charles Louis Napoleon, the Empereur Napoleon III. Jacques Marquet de Montbreton de Norvins (1769-1854) was politican and historical writer. His ”Histoire de Napoléon” was published in 1827 and was a major success. Louis Bonaparte’s reply was published by J. Bousquet in 1834 as ”Observations de Louis Bonaparte, Cte de St-Leu, sur L'Histoire de Napoléon, par M. de Norvins".Count Christophe Michel Roguet (1800-77) was marchal and first adjutant to Napoleon III.

Both editions with 24 plates, engraved by the dutch artist Simon Frisius. Here, however, with a misprinted page 119, with the engraved illustration from page 143, which depicts cliffs in the Stockholm archipelago, with the wrongly printed heading ”Wacx Holm”. The correct engraving of Vaxholm is attached to the page.The day by day account gives details of the journey and meetings with local state officers. The plates depict a.o. Reval (Talinn), Narva, a passage over a long, wooden log bridge, the ruined monastery of St Nicolai Vaysitsquy near Novgorod, Russian burning stoves, the towns of Milagona, Romanov, Glebovo, where the embassy was quartered, and the camp at Diderina, where the negotiations took place, and at the end the meeting with Gustavus Adolphus in the crown room in Stockholm.Anthonis Goeteeris (ca. 1574-1660) var ”deurwaerder” i Höga Rådet i Holland och följde som kasssaförvaltare den holländska diplomatiska missionen under Reynhoud van Brederodes (1567-1633) ledning till Ryssland, med uppdraget att medla i kriget mellan Gustav II Adolf och den ryska storfursten. I november 1615 ankom de till Glebova i Ryssland efter att med båt ha passerat Kullen, Helsingborg, Öland och Gotland till Reval. I Narva hade de en konferens med Axel Oxenstierna innan de for vidare in i Ryssland. Goeteeris passar förstås på att ge en beskrivning över det exotiska landet Rysslands ”wonderlijcke gestalteniße”. Under hösten 1616 återvänder de via Vaxholm till Stockholm, för vidare hemfärd med båt till Lübeck. Resultatet blev en tre månaders vapenvila. Även England deltog i förhandlingarna och motsättningar mellan England och Holland bidrog till det svaga resultatet.

Samlingen som består av ca 100 verk och som skapades av Fredrik Ulrik von Aken (1781-1848) och Maria Carolina von Aken, född Norstedt (1802-76), ger en intressant bild av musiken i en borgerlig familj i en medelstor herrgårdsmiljö under första halvan av 1800-talet. Den saknar som alltid sista rättelsebladet ”Ad bibliopegos”. Del två är i första upplagan, men saknar som oftast ”Testimonia”. Båda delarna trycktes i 500 exemplar. Fjärde delen är som alltid i faksimiltrycket som utgavs med kommentarer av G. E. Klemming i 100 exemplar. Originalet trycktes 1702 på Rudbecks eget tryckeri men vid Uppsala brand samma år hade endast 210 sidor tryckts och nästan hela upplagan, liksom en stor del av del tre, brann upp då branden drabbade det Rudbeckska huset hårt. Av fjärde delen överlevde endast en handfull exemplar. Första upplagan av det berömda atlasbandet. Det utgavs tillsammans med första textdelen av Atlantican 1679, men kopparsticken var färdiga redan 1676. Den innehåller fyra dubbelsidiga graverade kartor, fem graverade planscher samt åtskilliga träsnitt, både hel- och dubbelsidiga samt två dubbelsidiga tabeller. Samtliga kopparstick är utförda av Philipp Jacob Thellott, utom den berömda frontespisen, som är graverad av Dionysius Padt-Brugge. Inget svenskt historiebibliotek utan Rudbecks Atlantica! Här ställdes ”hela svenska stormaktstidens historiska strävan till sin spets, med allt vad det innebar av göticistiska drömmar om storhet och vetenskaplig fantasi”. Maria Elisabeth Stenbock (död 1693) var hovdam hos Ulrica Eleonora d.ä, och gunstling hos Hedvig Eleonora samt gift med landshövdingen Axel Lillie. Flera folianter från hennes bibliotek är enligt Carlander kända och samtliga har hennes monogramstämpel på pärmarna (II, s. 130.).

It was printed only six years after the editio princeps by Sweynheym and Pannartz at Subiaco in 1467, and was the first edition printed in Germany. It was the second edition with the fourteenth-century commentaries by the Oxford Dominicans Nicolaus Trivet (Trevetus) (fl.1297-1334) and Thomas Waleys (Wallensis) (d.1349), first printed in Mentelin’s Strasbourg edition of c. 1468. The text is also printed with two of the earliest types ever cut. The text of Augustinus, which goes to leaf 284 recto and ends with the first colophon, is set in 45 lines with the text type first used for the 1462 Bible. At leaf 284 verso the commentaries by Thomas Waleys and Nicolaus Trivet begin. They are set in 60 lines with a smaller type originally made for the 1459 Durandus. At the last leaf is the second colophon with the printer’s device of Fust and Schoeffer printed in red. In this Schoeffer gives important information on the history of printing, and boasts with pride of the invention of printing ”...with much labor completed in the famous city of Mainz in Germany, not by tracing with the quill-pen, but ingeniously composed from the heads of type-letters, by Peter Schoeffer of Gernsheim ...”. Saint Augustine (354-430) Bishop of Hippo, was one of the four great Fathers of the Latin church and perhaps the most influential. In ”The City of God”, which is one of the most important books in Christianity, he puts theology in relation to the history of mankind and explains God’s action in the world, ”God’s gouvernment on Earth” as PMM label the book, and it remained authoritative until the seventeenth century. It was printed seventeen times during the fifteenth century, which also is an indication of how profoundly influential it was of the Christian church. But it was not only theologically important. Much of the medieval regulations of commerce and prices were derived from his ideas as well as the contrasting descriptions of a just ruler and a tyrant. Later on the idea of international law was also partly derived from the book and it is cited by Hugo GrotiusPeter Schoeffer the elder (1425?-1502) worked with Johannes Gutenberg in Mainz, but after Gutenberg’s loss of his officin to the creditor Johann Fust, Schoeffer become a partner to Fust and co-owner, he also married Fust’s daughter. They formed the officin Fust and Schoeffer” in 1457 and after the death of Fust in 1466 Schoeffer continued himself, but kept the firm’s device. He is considered one of the best and most innovative among the early printers and bookseller in Europe.Trzemeszno in Poland was a property of the monastery of Canons Regular of St. Augustine from the 12th century. The wealthy Leipzig publishing heir Hans Meyer (1858-1929) was an explorer and editor, and from 1885 director of the ”Bibliographisches Institut” in Leipzig. He owned around 200 incunables.
