Schleswig/Slesvig 1652. Folio (45 x 30 cm). (8)+301+(3) pages. Engraved title + 40 double-pages with engraved maps and town plans. Contemporary full binding of marbled calf with richly gilt spine. Old ink stamp (Odense Kathedral-Skoles Bibliothek) on titlepage. The titlepage slightly frayed along lower edge. Slight foxing thorughout. Some maps with discreetly closed marginal tears (only visible on verso). The map with the northern part of Dithmarschen loosened. Table-of-contents in old hand on back flyleaf. * Graesse II,324. Bibl. Dan. III,653. An attractive copy of this outstanding atlas of the two duchies of Schleswig and Holstein, the present Danish province of Sønderjylland and the German Bundesland Schleswig-Holstein. The map material includes a map of the old World (Europe, Asia, Africa), a map of Germany and one of Scandinavia. Among the town plans is a magnificent city plan of Hamburg. The maps were engraved by the brothers Matthias and Nicolai Petersen, both of them goldsmiths in the town of Husum, after drawings by the highly talented cartographer Johannes Mejer (1606-74) who was also a citizen of Husum. Mejer got famous for his cartographic genius, and the plates for the Schleswig-Holstein atlas were bought by Willem Blaeu jun. and reused in coloured versions in his Atlas Maior, Amsterdam 1662. The Danckwerth atlas was the only work of Mejer to appear in print the cartographer's lifetime. A monumental atlas of Denmark was never fulfilled due to the disastrous wars between Denmark and Sweden 1657-60. ** The duchy of Schlesvig (Slesvig/Sønderjylland) was a part of Denmark, whereas the duchy of Holsten/Holstein sorted under the the German Empire, with the Kaiser in Vienna as sovereign. From 1460, the duchies were administered as an entity under the Danish king. In the 1650s, the area of Schleswig and Holstein was split (and had been since 1542) into regions either ruled by the Danish king or by his kinsman, the duke of Schleswig-Holstein-Gottorp. The Danckwerth atlas is a result of a united sponsporship of the Danish king Frederik III and his political counterpart, duke Friedrich III of Holstein-Gottorp. The latter used all his political energy to loosen his dukedom from the Danish realm by nurturing close relations to Sweden. However, both king and duke got their portraits - side by side - on the titlepage of this atlas. Thanks to this coordinated initiative, this great atlas appeared, giving a most detailed and accurate description of the area between the Baltic and the North Sea at a cartographic level far ahead of the time.*** The maps give an important documentation of the development of the coastline along the North Sea. A flood in 1634 changed it totally, swallowing both islands and towns, but Mejer has been able to produce credible maps of the area both before and after this disaster. The cartouches show all kinds of peasants, fishermen and town people, fullfilling the aspirations of this atlas to give at total description of this part of Europe as it was in the year of 1652. Mejer himself appears - shown at work - on one of the plates.

Spine-ends and hinges on volume 1 & 2 professionally repaired. * A complete set of »The Danish Vitruvius«. This monumental work depicts the most important buildings in Copenhagen and the royal palaces and castles around the country. The two volumes are a valuable source to the looks of buildings that have perished since. Originally the work was planned in 10 volumes. Only two was published, whereas the manuscript and drawings for plates of a third volume was archived. The latter was published in 1966 and consists of valuable documentation about churches and official buildings in Copenhagen. In the manuscript, Thurah presents the visions for the entire work: To fulfill what his predecessor Peder Hansen Resen had aimed for in the 17th century - a total description of Denmark, fully illustrated. Resen's material, described by Thurah, perished in the great fire of Copenhagen in 1728. ** The present set is a fine and quite unique example of a complete set, established in the early 20th century thanks to access to the archived material. *** Dansk Bogkunst 17.

Two loose parts of the six original issues [no. 2 and 5]. Both are first edition, first printing. No other copy of part 5 has been recorded in private ownership with the front wrapper preserved..

Indvendig et pænt, rent eksemplar. * BFN 266-270, 276-279, 303-305, 325-328, 352-355, 408-411. Printing and the Mind of Man 299. Hans mentor, fysikeren H.C. Ørsted, så dog rigtigt, da han sagde til Andersen: Improvisatoren vil gøre Dem berømt, men eventyrene vil gøre Dem udødelig.*** Da H.C. Andersen kom til forlægger C.A. **** Copies of 'Eventyr fortalte for Børn' are almost always made up from different issues -There seems to be less than ten copies consisting of six first issues, and only one or two copies in private ownership. Andersen collectors have always accepted, that second issues are quite acceptable, as they were the ones offered usually for sale. In this copy, all the six booklets are in second issue, as they should be in order to have stayed at Reitzels shelves long enough to be part of the clean out sale with new printed boards in 1847.***. When Andersen in 1835 came to his publisher Reitzel with the farfetched idea of printing fairy tales for children, the publisher wasn't keen on the idea. As Andersen needed money badly and his first novel 'Improvisatoren' had been selling fairly well, Reitzel reluctantly agreed to print the first booklet in 200 copies. They were printed on cheap paper and cost very little - they were only meant for a cheap pastime for children. No immediate success, Andersen nevertheless made two more booklets, so the three of them made a complete unit in 1837. The sales must have picked up a bit, as Andersen was allowed to make three more booklets from 1838-1842. By that time, the first part of the first batch had run out (after 7 years!), so Reitzel printed some more (how many is unknown) in 1842, and of the second part of the first batch was reprinted in 1843. From December 1843 Andersen released his next collection of Fairy tales ['Nye Eventyr', published in a larger and nicer format than the first six 'Eventyr fortalte for Børn] and his renown as a writer of children's books grew. Reitzel reprinted more of the first fairytales, and finally cleared out the last batch of the old stock of 'Eventyr fortalte for Børn' in 1847 - and this is one of those copies. How few there were left is unknown, but as the print runs have always been small, there might be as little as 20-30 copies issued with these printed cardboard wrappers - of which only this one survives.
