London, The Mandrake Press, (1929). 36x27. 94 pp. + 26 colour plates. Publisher's half leather with gilt cover designs, top edge gilt, otherwise untrimmed. Extremities lightly rubbed, small ink stain on reverse of one plate. "Privately printed for subscribers only" on Arches mouldmade paper, in 510 numbered copies of which this is no. 425. A documentation of fifteen oil and eleven water colour paintings by the English novelist, poet, playwright, literary critic and painter, with his own 23-page introduction. When the paintings were exhibited at the Warren Gallery in London in June 1929, they were condemned by Paul Konody in the Observer as "an outrage upon decency", the critic for the Daily Express declared that "the subjects of some of them will compel most spectators to recoil with horror", and according to The Daily Telegraph, "paintings of so gross and obscene a character" had "never been seen in London before". Thirteen of those with the most overtly erotic motifs were confiscated by the police; they were later returned to the artist on the stipulation that they never be exhibited publicly.

A nice copy despite minor signs of use including some incipient cracking of the spine/cover cloth joint. Attractively designed guide to modern buildings in Berlin, several designed by Bruno or Max Taut, others by Mendelsohn, Gropius, Behrens, Mies, Korn, Neutra, Poelzig, Scharoun, etc.

Tiny weak scuffing of the leaves' utmost corner tips; otherwise very fine. Introduction by Daido Moriyama in Japanese and English, and a postscript by Michael Kenna.

Liège, Charles Claesen, 1866. 40x29. Engraved title leaf + 210 numbered leaves including nine text leaves, 200 leaves with facsimiles of Dietterlin's engravings, and a final leaf with impressum. Loose as issued in a printed cloth-backed portfolio with four pairs of tie-strings (the bottom pair missing), boards darkened and rubbed. From Johnny Roosval's library, with a stamp and his inscription "Johnny Roosval. Muramaris" inside front cover. An 19th-century facsimile of the famous work that appeared in three editions 1593-5, 1598 and 1655, which all eventually became excessively rare, "quite likely because they were so widely used, for they did not get into libraries, but into the workshops of architects and decorators, where they were copied and recopied, worn out and in the end discarded" (Adolf K. Placzek). The plates are organised around the five orders of architecture, but for Dietterlin they are mainly a take-off point for his imaginative fantasy creations including heavily decorated windows, chimneys, door frames, portals, fountains, tombs and monuments.

The study describes the history, project designs, realisation, composition, decoration, designation and price of the Fontainebleau service, including tables of orders, deliveries and final composition, and a complete list of painters for each piece, as well as an outline of the Sévres production during that period.
