"The influence of Roland Barthes on Burgin's work is well documented. Equally, Burgin's prominence as an artist and theorist concerned with text and image offers a productive dialogue with Barthes' work. Victor Burgin has long been considered both theorist and practitioner, while Barthes is more known as a theorist and writer. In bringing to the fore Barthes's practice of painting and drawing, Barthes/Burgin prompts a new critical consideration of Barthes/Burgin, theory/practice, writing/making and criticality/visuality. Barthes/Burgin features two new interviews with Burgin, one concerned with his turn to new digital practices and the other a reflection on his reading of Roland Barthes. Also included are images and texts from the artists and an essay critically examining Barthes' exercises in drawing and painting. This book accompanied an exhibition at the John Hansard Gallery (February to April 2016), bringing together recent projection works by Victor Burgin and a selection of drawings by Roland Barthes rarely seen outside of France. Director Francois Levy-Kuentz's film uses previously unreleased archival material, such as Klein's personal films, to capture the artist's astonishing career, from its beginning in 1954 to his death in 1962. In those eight short years, Klein turned the modern art world upside down. Besides inventing IKB, he was at the forefront of monochrome paintings, was early to photo manipulation (his most famous, Le Saut dans le Vide, has him flying from a wall, diving).

One of the most important avant-garde movements of postwar Paris was Lettrism, which crucially built an interest in the relationship between writing and image into projects in poetry, painting, and especially cinema. Highly influential, the Lettrists served as a bridge of sorts between the earlier works of the Dadaists and Surrealists and the later Conceptual artists.Off-Screen Cinema is the first monograph in English of the Lettrists. Offering a full portrait of the avant-garde scene of 1950s Paris, it focuses on the film works of key Lettrist figures like Gil J Wolman, Maurice Lemaître, François Dufrêne, and especially the movement’s founder, Isidore Isou, a Romanian immigrant whose “discrepant editing” deliberately uncoupled image and sound. Through Cabañas’s history, we see not only the full scope of the Lettrist project, but also its clear influence on Situationism, the French New Wave, the New Realists, as well as American filmmakers such as Stan Brakhage.

Microgroove continues John Corbett's exploration of diverse musics, with essays, interviews, and musician profiles that focus on jazz, improvised music, contemporary classical, rock, folk, blues, post-punk, and cartoon music. Corbett's approach to writing is as polymorphous as the music, ranging from oral history and journalistic portraiture to deeply engaged cultural critique. Corbett advocates for the relevance of "little" music, which despite its smaller audience, is of enormous cultural significance. He writes on musicians as varied as Sun Ra, P.J. Harvey, Koko Taylor, Steve Lacy, and Helmut Lachenmann; and among other topics, he discusses recording formats, investigates the relationship between music and visual art, dance, and poetry, and with Terri Kapsalis, analyzes the role of female orgasm sounds in contemporary popular music. "Petercol attended the Maritime School and, after graduation, served on ocean-going merchant navy ships. He graduated in Painting from the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb, in 1975, after which he spent two years in Ljubo Ivancic's Master Workshop. For years he has worked as an art editor of encyclopaedic and lexicographic publications and, until retirement, as a professor at the Academy of Applied Arts in Rijeka. During the 70s and the beginning of the 80s, Goran Petercol was closely associated with a group of conceptual artists who adopted analytical methods in structuring their works. His exploration of processuality, reach, stylization and various conceptual strategies has been continuous. From early on in his career, he has been treating light as a material. In addition, he uses light and shadow to lay claim to and reactivate a certain territory. He thereby directs the gaze of the viewer to what usually gets eluded – spatial relations, the combination of elements tied to a certain place, as well as memory as an idea of a past event which, according to the artist, is a part of life and art to a greater extent than we might be aware of."

In the 1750s he studied in Paris and Rome, where he became part of an international network of pioneering artists and scholars, including J.J. Winckelmann. In Denmark, Wiedewelt endeavoured to translate the ancient idiom in statuary and monuments into an ‘eternal’, national style. This is the first book-length study of Johannes Wiedewelt in English, and the volume aims at reassessing Wiedewelt’s role in the service of art, art theory, academic education, design, etc. Emphasis is placed on his studies of Classical Antiquity and Danish prehistoric and medieval monuments, which makes him particularly interesting for the history of archaeology'.
