Kirkegaards Antikvariat
kir27685
Copenhagen: Museum Tusculanum Press/University of Copenhagen, 2010. Publisher's printed wrappers with dustjacket. 372 pp. With 81 colour and 66 b/w illustrations. Texts (in English) by Else-Marie Bukdahl, Jan Zahle, et al. Very good clean copy- 'In the latter half of the 18th century, Johannes Wiedewelt (1731-1802) played a pivotal role in introducing an early form of Neoclassicism in Danish sculpture by creating a large number of monuments for many different purposes. In the 1750s he studied in Paris and Rome, where he became part of an international network of pioneering artists and scholars, including J.J. Winckelmann. In Denmark, Wiedewelt endeavoured to translate the ancient idiom in statuary and monuments into an ‘eternal’, national style. This is the first book-length study of Johannes Wiedewelt in English, and the volume aims at reassessing Wiedewelt’s role in the service of art, art theory, academic education, design, etc. Emphasis is placed on his studies of Classical Antiquity and Danish prehistoric and medieval monuments, which makes him particularly interesting for the history of archaeology'. Kirkegaards Antikvariat
kir54178
Denmark: Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, 2022. Large tall 4to in wraps as issued. 108 pages, richly illustrated. Text in English. Fine unread copy. 1. ed. Book designed by Michael Jensen of K Grafik. - Dorothy Iannone was born in Boston, Massachusetts, in 1933. Her father died when she was two years old and she was raised by her mother Sarah Nicoletti Iannone, later Sarah Pucci. She graduated from Boston University in 1957 with a B.A. in American Literature. She went on to study English literature at the graduate level at Brandeis University. In 1958 she married the painter James Upham and the couple moved to New York City. The following year, Iannone taught herself to paint alongside her husband. Between 1963 and 1967 she exhibited with her husband at the Stryke Gallery, an exhibition space she ran with her husband in New York and traveled frequently to Europe and Asia. In 1961 the U.S. Customs at the Idlewild Airport in Queens, New York seized her book The Tropic of Cancer by Henry Miller she was traveling with and which was banned at the time. Iannone sued the U.S. Customs with assistance from the New York Civil Liberties Union, which caused her book to be returned and the ban on Miller to be lifted. The majority of Iannone's paintings, texts, and visual narratives depict themes of erotic love. Her explicit renderings of the human body draw heavily from the artist's travels and from Japanese woodcuts, Greek vases, and visual motifs from Eastern religions, including Tibetan Buddhism, Indian Tantrism and Christian ecstatic traditions like those of the seventeenth-century Baroque. Her small wooden statues of celebrities with visible genitals, including Charlie Chaplin and Jacqueline Kennedy, especially display with the artist's interest in African tribal statues. The explicit nature of Iannone's work frequently fell foul of censors in the 60s, 70s, and 80s. The artist said of the early censorship of her work: "When my work was not censored outright, it was either mildly ridiculed or described as folkloric, or just ignored. In 1969 the Kunsthalle Bern tried to censor Iannone's work in the group exhibition Ausstellung der Freunde by requesting that she cover up the genitals of her figures. In protest Dieter Roth dropped out of the exhibition and the curator of the Kunsthalle Bern, Harald Szeeman, resigned. Iannone recalled the experience in the Fluxus publication The Story of Bern or Showing Colors (1970).

Kirkegaards Antikvariat
kir57527
Cambridge University Press, 2001. Softcover as issued. XIII, 368 pp. With illustrations bw. Very good copy, no name and no markings. 1st edition. From the series Cambridge Studies in Renaissance Literature and Culture, # 38. "During the late sixteenth century 'fashion' first took on the sense of restless change in contrast to the older sense of fashioning or making. As fashionings, clothes were perceived as material forms of personal and social identity which made the man or woman. In Renaissance Clothing and the Materials of Memory Jones and Stallybrass argue that the making and transmission of fabrics and clothing were central to the making of Renaissance culture. Their examination explores the role of clothes as forms of memory transmitted from master to servant, from friend to friend, from lover to lover. This book offers a close reading of literary texts, paintings, textiles, theatrical documents, and ephemera to reveal how clothing and textiles were crucial to the making and unmaking of concepts of status, gender, sexuality, and religion in the Renaissance".

Miller, Stephen Paul:
Kirkegaards Antikvariat
kir53221
Duke University Press, 1999. XII, 414 pages. With bw illustraions. Fine clean copy. First edition. - In "The Seventies Now" Stephen Paul Miller (is) examining a wide range of political and cultural phenomena—from the long shadow cast by Richard Nixon and the Watergate scandal to Andy Warhol and the disco scene—identifying in these phenomena a pivotal yet previously unidentified social trend, the movement from institutionalized external surveillance to the widespread internalization of such practices. The concept of surveillance and its attendant social ramifications have been powerful agents in U.S. culture for many decades, but in describing how during the 1970s Americans learned to “survey” themselves, Miller shines surprising new light on such subjects as the women's movement, voting rights enforcement, the Ford presidency, and environmental legislation. He illuminates the significance of what he terms “microperiods” and analyzes relevant themes in many of the decade's major films—such as The Deer Hunter, Network, Jaws, Star Wars, and Apocalypse Now—and in the literature of writers including John Ashbery, Toni Morrison, Adrienne Rich, and Sam Shepard. In discussing the reverberations of the 1969 Stonewall riots, technological innovations, the philosophy of Michel Foucault (...).

HARRIS, FRANK:
Kirkegaards Antikvariat
kir57113
New York: Grove Press / Bookthrift reprint (1963). Heavy hardcover, with worn jacket. XVIII, 983 pp. Foxing to endpapers and some wavyness to first pages else overall a solid and clean copy. Charming 1960's copy with jacket design by Roy Kuhlman. Komplet udgave af Frank Harris' erindringsværk 'My Life and Loves'.

He was already familiar with the photo montages of Moholy-Nagy and the Soviet artists Lissicki, Rodczenko, and Klucis and he was an admirer of the work of Heartfield, whose work influenced him greatly".

Oslo: Nasjonalmusset, 2014. 8vo in stiff wraps as issued. 158 pp. Illustrated, with text in both Norwegian and English. Light surface marks to cover else a clean very good copy. 1st ed. "Aase Texmon Rygh introduced modern abstract sculpture into the Norwegian art scene as early as 1952. Since then she has uncompromisingly pursued the idea of abstraction and reduction, and has shown an unflagging commitment to the essence of sculpture and purity of form, as well as a firm belief in the integrity of the three-dimensional object. The catalogue presents, as did the exhibition, the broad range of the artist's production from the 1950s to the present. In addition to two articles the catalogue includes a large number of pictures and a wealth of documentation material."

Kirkegaards Antikvariat
kir33839
Verlag fur moderne Kunst Nurnberg, 2012. Small red hardcover. 176 pages. Multilingual. With illustrations. Fine / as new copy. In 1932, Marcel Duchamp published Opposition and Sister Squares Are Reconciled, a collaboration with chess champion Vitaly Halberstadt on endgames in chess. Ernst Strouhal's illustrated study approaches this volume as an "almost utopian treatise on chess endgames" and as a trilingual artist's book. Strouhal playfully yet validly demonstrates how Opposition and Sister Squares are Reconciled by M. Duchamp & V. Halberstadt (1932) not only comprises a rare, almost utopian treatise on chess endgames but is also a unique chess book for artists and an artist’s book for chess players.
