Amsterdam; aux depens de la Compagnie, 1767. Small 8:o. viii, 189, (1 blank) pp. Contemporary full calf with five raised bands, gilt floral ornaments on spine, red edges and marbled endpapers. Spine is slightly faded and worn. There is a small loss at head of spine. Extremities are a bit rubbed and there are a few light scrape marks on the boards. A light stain in lower margin of pp. 5/6 & 31-34. Pp. 7/8 is slightly creased. A few insignificant specks and cornerfolds, contents otherwise strikingly clean and bright. The novel consists of 16 chapters in which Bélisaire advices Justinien (Louis XV) in governmental issues. It was condemned by the Sorbonne due to the plea for religious tolerance in chapter XV, which had the effect of an effective advertising campaign and made a bestseller out of this book, generally acknowledged as a mediocre novel. Early reprint, from the same year as the first edition, published by Merlin in Paris.
