Brandes, Georg:
Kirkegaards Antikvariat
kir58939
Gyldendalske Boghandel, 1883. I pænt, lidt slidt samtidigt halvshirt med forgyldt titel. 403 pp. Forreste indre fals svag men stadig solid. En del samtidige blyantsunderstregninger. 1ste udgave. Shore joined East India Company's service in the year 1769 at the secret political department. Shore was thereafter made the assistant to the board of revenue at Murshidabad in 1770, which provided Shore the opportunity to experience the horrors of the 1770 Famine at first hand. In the years following the famine Shore was a member of the revenue council in Calcutta and later appointed a seat at the committee of revenue by the Governor-General. Shore also served as the revenue commissioner of the districts in Dacca and Bahar. The profound knowledge that Shore acquired over the years, came in use in Cornwallis' revenue experiments, which ultimately took the shape of Permanent Settlement. Shore himself succeeded Cornwallis as the Governor of Bengal in 1793 and remained in office till 1797. In 1798 Shore was created Baron Teignmouth in the peerage of Ireland for his services. After retiring Shore became a member of the Board of Control and wrote a biography and memoir on his close friend Sir William Jones. Kirkegaards Antikvariat
kir59076
Paris: HAZAN / Musées D'Orsay et de l’Orangerie , 2017. Tall 8vo in wraps as issued. 221, (2) pp. Richly illustrated, with text in French. Very good clean copy. "The artistic revolt of Dada, which arose in Zurich in the midst of the turmoil of the Great War in 1916, expressed a rejection of the traditional values ??of civilisation that had led to the disaster of that period. In this context, a re-evaluation of other systems of thought and creation took place, leading many avant-garde artists to consider and appropriate radically different types of artistic production. For the first time, and in cooperation with the Rietberg Museum in Zurich and the Berlinische Galerie, an exhibition was devoted to the confrontation of the Dadaists with the art and culture of non-European countries. The stagings of the "Soirées nègres" at the Cabaret Voltaire, appealing to all the senses and combining music, poetry and dance, attacked the very notion of art and called into question the artistic values ??that had prevailed until then. As early as 1917, the Coray Gallery in Zurich exhibited African objects side by side with Dadaist works. The same year, Tzara wrote his "Note sur l’art nègre", published in the journal SIC where he stated "from black let us draw light". The masks of Marcel Janco, the costumes of Sophie Taeuber-Arp, the collages of Hannah Höch or the collective works refusing the notion of author bear witness to this research for a new formal language. This multidisciplinary exhibition will allow us to confront non-Western works that are both African but also Amerindian or Asian with Dadaist productions, highlighting processes of exchange and appropriation by these artists. Dada paintings, sculptures, photocollages, photographs will be mixed with non-Western sculptures in games of resonances supported by the scenographic staging of the exhibition. The Parisian stage will also highlight the fertile ground pre-existing in the French capital for non-European arts and the way in which this was able to nourish the movement. Thus, the exhibition finds its place at the Musée de l’Orangerie, by highlighting the links between gallery owner Paul Guillaume and the actors gravitating around Dada and around African art at that time. The Orangerie stage will also open up on the importance that this subject could have had in the genesis of the links between the surrealist movement and non-Western arts".

Hansen, Al & Arthur Køpcke (Koepcke):
Kirkegaards Antikvariat
kir44543
Copenhagen: Kunsthal Charlottenborg, 2008. 4to in wraps as issued. 300 pages. Text in both Danish and English. Near fine copy. First edition. - "‘Action’ because both artists worked with actions, performances and works that in various ways encouraged active participation from the viewer. ‘Remains’ because what is left are the remains of these projects, performances and actions, but also because both of them employed the debris of the everyday in their production. Al Hansen and Arthur Køpcke shared era, colleagues and zeitgeist. They brought international currents to Denmark at a time when the Danish art scene felt far removed from the metropolises in Europe and the US, both physically and mentally. Both artists had an unpretentious and casual relationship with the audience, encouraging active participation – and thus helped create the bedrock of our contemporary art’s cross-medial works as well as interventions, performances and social design. An American, Al Hansen (1927-1995) primarily worked in New York but being an inveterate nomad he spent long periods of time in Denmark, Germany, Italy and the Netherlands. A seminal figure in the Fluxus network, he if any dissolved the boundaries between the life he led and the art he created. Hansen was Fluxus – always on the move and always with the materials for his works at hand. His works are a humorous and intelligent conglomerate of neo-Dada, Fluxus and pop art. Arthur Køpcke (1928 – 1977) was German, married a Dane and settled in Copenhagen. For half a decade, until 1963, he ran Galerie Køpcke in the city which, nourished by his radical innovation and driving force – became the centre of European avant-garde. Here came Robert Filliou, Diter Rot, Jean Tinguely, Daniel Spoerri, Piero Manzoni and others, and from the domestic art scene Albert Mertz, Gunnar Aagaard Andersen, Preben Hornung and others. An impressive array of exhibitions was presented at Galerie Køpcke but it was also a significant stomping ground for an alternative art practice that bloomed on the Fluxus scene in Copenhagen as well as abroad. The Al Hansen exhibition is concentrated on the works he ‘left’ in Denmark, supplemented by works from two pivotal collections in New York and Berlin. Curator is Maria Gadegaard, Kunsthal Charlottenborg. The Arthur Køpcke exhibition is the most comprehensive one of its kind to date, comprising works from more than forty collectors and six institutions in Denmark and Germany. Curators are artist Claus Carstensen and Helle Bøgelund, Kunsthal Charlottenborg. The bilingual catalogue has been produced for the exhibition, containing 300 pages with colour photographs of all the exhibited works, texts on the artists and their time as well as a list of works and CV’s. The writers are Helle Bøgelund, Maria Gadegaard, Simon Anderson, Morten Søndergaard, Claus Carstensen and Marianne Bech. The photographs are taken by Anders Sune Berg, and the graphic design is by Rasmus Koch Studio".

"Ultimately, Dream Baby Dream is a book about history, and a vital one given its subject. Suicide paved the way for so much, from punk to no wave to industrial, but are cited more often as an influence than an important band in their own right. How they survived through all the upheaval of New York over the past half-century, and how their music stayed so bracingly unique, had to be documented permanently. Needs has thus done a service, and in the process told a tale that anyone interested in unbreakable artistic dedication will find fascinating."

Christines Picture Book is a beautifully bound scrapbook of 122 leaves, originally dating from 1859 meant as gift and not for publication. On the right-hand pages and some of the left-hand ones, more than 1,000 pictures of widely varying kinds have been pasted in, most of them printed in colour or hand-coloured. In many instances, amusing little hand-written captions or verses have been added. It was compiled by Hans Christian Andersen and his friend, a Danish magistrate named Adolph Drewsen, who is named on the first sheet as being Christine's grandfather. The occasion was her third birthday, 30 October 1859. Christine was the great-grandchild of Jonas Collin, a civil servant who had been of great support to the young Hans Christian Andersen, and to whose family Andersen became closely attached. Its 122 pages contain over 1,000 pasted-in pictures plus a few paper cuts, an art form at which Andersen was adept. The images were collected from all kinds of European publications, and the result offers a unique pictorial snapshot of European culture of the 1850s.
