PRUITT, ROB:

kir58931
The books in this selection are The and Times of Little Richard by Charles White, SHOUT - Ther Beatles in their Generation by Philip Norman, The Complete Book of Salads, Yoga Self-Taught by Andre Van Lysebeth, and Teddy Bare - The Last of the Kennedy Clan by Zad Rust. Enclosed are 3 bookmarks signed in hand by Pruitt a piece of paper with a handmade "drawing" by Pruitt and a recipy handwritten (by Pruitt maybe). More photos available upon request. Original item from "Rob Pruitt's bookclub". For a while around 10 years ago, every day Rob Pruitt would sell a selection of his books from his personal collection online or as part of his "art sales". Each book was stamped with a bookmark indicating that it comes from his 'Bookclub collection". "Rob Pruitt was born in Washington D.C. in 1964 and studied at the Corcoran College of Art and Design in Washington D.C. and Parsons School of Design in New York. He lives and works in New York. Since the early 1990s, Rob Pruitt’s risk-taking investigations into American popular culture have taken many forms. From his notorious Cocaine Buffet (1998) and glitter portraits of Pandas or the significant Suicide Paintings series, Pruitt’s works are a surreal and extravagant interpretation of the pop world, a kaleidoscopic look towards mass culture by exploring the multiples aspects and the paradoxes of our present time". - "appropriation of similes, once strictly the providence of kitsch, has nothing to do with blurring the distinctions between high and low. Instead, rainbows and butterflies have come to symbolize a magical new world where order is without hierarchies, edification is without snobbishness, prosperity is without greed, and most importantly, where imagination and consumption are exceedingly valued. This is the world of Rob Pruitt. Pruitt acts as a conduit, shuffling images from mass culture to high art production. He also subscribes to the empowering and inventive 'do-it-yourself' attitude of visual design and art making".

Arnholm, Flemming & Rifbjerg, Klaus:
Kirkegaards Antikvariat
kir55629
Copenhagen: Forlaget Rhodos, 1969. Original paper boards as issued. Unpaginated. Only minor wear to edges, and overall a very good, clean above average well preserved copy. More photos available upon request. Largely unknown 60s hip artist book by Danish photographer Flemming Arnholm and poet Klaus Rifbjerg: 'Fotografier og digte fra New York' ('Photographs and poems from New York'). Poems by Rifbjerg (in Danish) and photographs in black and white by Arnholm. Young photographer Flemming Arnholm went to New York in 1968 where he wrote articles and reviews on photography for a Danish photo magazine. In New York he met and interviewed Richard Avedon, Karsh, Irving Penn and other star photographers and during that period he shot the photos for this book. The book was arranged by Michael Malling (who did several outstanding and award winning graphic designs for books published by Rhodos) and the result was a highly unusual photo book object, a 2-way folded 'leporello' or accordion-book (it can be folded and placed in various ways) containing very fine photographs from New York late 1960's. It was chosen as one the 28 most important Danish photo books for the catalogue and exhibition '28 Danish Photographic Books' (2006) in connection with exhibition 'The Open Book' by The Hasselblad Centre (2004). The book unfolds in different ways and directions: one of the central panels unfolds vertically whereas the lateral panels unfold horizontally, allowing for different combination and juxtaposition of pictures. The panels can also be unfolded in ways that allow the book to take different geometric forms and to become a photobook-sculpture. First (and only) edition.

Leadbeater, C. W. (Charles Webester):
Kirkegaards Antikvariat
kir59743
Leipzig: Theosophisches Verlagshaus, 1908. Bound with the original front cover in a very good private full cloth with gilt title to spine (see photos). (First London: The Theosophical Publishing Society 1902). VIII, 151 pages, complete with all the stunning color plates. Light soiling to front cover and binding but not significant and in all a very attractive well preserved copy. More photos available upon request. Man Visible and Invisible; aus dem Englischen von A. V. Ulrich. Die 1. Auflage / 1st German printing. Besant and Leadbeater had great influence on contemporary thought and artists like Hilma af Klint and Kandinsky, their performances and publications were important factors that led to the "genius opening of new perspectives for painting" and Yeats, Eliot, Malevich, Kandinsky, Mondrian and many others were charmed by Theosophy. In the first decades of the twentieth century, it was a widespread "component of Western cultural life". Leadbeater and his partners played an intriguing role in shaping a beginning global culture that could weave together East and West, mysticism and rationalism, sound and sight. In recent years these publications has seen a great revival, partly among younger artists looking for alternative innovative visual languages, but as well as celebrity artists for the Völkisch Movement and other backward longing extreme right movements. For believers it is considered one of the foundational works of modern aura research. Leadbeater not only describes the immediate aura of the human body, but his perspective goes further. He describes the higher bodies of the human being, the development of psychic abilities and their expression in the aura, and the maturation of individuality up to the "Master of Wisdom." The development of life and consciousness is impressively illustrated with many large-format plates. A unique original copy on the subtle bodies of the human being. Very rare, no copy in the German National Library.

BALLET. - Swope, Martha:
Kirkegaards Antikvariat
kir56197
New York City Ballet 1970's and 1980's. Most photos with a paper size around 20 x 25 cm. Mostly very well preserved. Enclosed are New York City Ballet Programmes from 1970's and 1980's (5). Please inquire for more photos and information. Collection of eighteen original vintage photographic prints by Martha Swope, the photographer who immortalized the movements of the New York City Ballet: "In 1957, a young woman named Martha Swope walked into a studio at the New York City Ballet company, where her friend Jerome Robbins was taking classes to prepare for rehearsals of his new show, West Side Story. Swope—a lanky girl of 5’9” with long arms and slender fingers—was a student at the adjoining School of American Ballet, and had befriended him during her studies. Robbins, who was also an amateur photographer, noticed that Swope often photographed her teachers and shared his passion for the medium. He invited her to use his darkroom, and then asked her to take some informal shots of rehearsals. West Side Story was a smash hit, and one of Swope’s photographs ended up in Time magazine. But she was still set on becoming a professional dancer. Then, one day—“mid-plié,” as Swope would later recall to dance critic Francis Mason—Lincoln Kirstein, who co-founded the New York City Ballet with George Balanchine, walked into her class and offered her a job as the company’s official photographer. Swope lived in the dance studio for the rest of her career, but not as a dancer. In addition to her photographs for the New York City Ballet, she also shot Broadway productions of Annie and the first run of Cats. She was in the studio when choreographers like John Taras and Merce Cunningham were creating experimental, modern ballets alongside Arthur Mitchell—New York City Ballet’s first African-American dancer. But she also had unfettered access to Balanchine, arguably ballet’s most legendary and influential choreographer, in his prime. By the time Swope began photographing the company full-time, Balanchine was in the midst of choreographing some of his most notable works: Agon in 1957, Stars and Stripes in 1958, and later Harlequinade and Jewels in the mid-1960s. Swope viewed Balanchine and his muses—among them Allegra Kent, Suzanne Farrell, Patricia McBride, and Jacques d’Amboise—with intimacy and tenderness. The genius technique and style of Farrell and Balanchine, especially when she danced under his tutelage, often softens into vulnerability through her lens. While audiences enjoy the near-spiritual experience of watching humans transform into divine forms, Swope saw their fragile act of creation unfold in the studio. When they perform, we aren’t meant to see the dancers as one of us; they are supposed to transcend the earthly realm. Perhaps unwittingly, she betrayed to the viewer an often ignored and yet obvious truth about ballet: Achieving physical perfection is crushing, difficult work. Her lens captured the dancers’ focused faces, staring hard at Balanchine while mimicking uncanny contortions; to regular people, their abilities are nothing short of magic. In fact, Swope had a dancer’s mind, which gave her the ability to click the shutter at the precise moment of fluidity and action. Yet her body of work, which she donated to the New York Public Library in 2010 (she passed away in 2017, at 88 years old), is much more than just elegant photos of dancers performing difficult moves; she saw them at the height of their talent, and used her camera not as an opportunity to capture another example of perfection, but to make them accessible, refreshingly human. Her lens dispensed with the typical self-important snobbery often associated with ballet; the resulting photographs capture moments of silliness, frustration, and joy. This mindset toward photographing ballet was especially important in a field that is dominated by women, but their performances crafted by male choreographers and composers. The ballerina is viewed as a vessel, translating the vision of a man, possessed by the spirit of ballet. Swope saw these women differently. She stripped away fantasies about dancers and focused on the ballerina as an artist and an athlete, not an object. Yet her photographs do capture many awe-inspiring moments simply because the ballerina is capable of extraordinary physical feats. Swope’s photos could see both the incredible talent and the person behind it. Whether she intended it or not, Swope’s photographs helped lift the veil over ballet without taking away any of the wonder that watching it provokes. The little window that she carved into New York City Ballet’s hallowed studios remains a necessary view of the artistic process of creation, but perhaps more importantly, it gives the ballerina a break from living on a pedestal on high. In Swope’s photographs, ballerinas come back to earth, where they belong. " (Elisabeth Sherman).

Andersen, Ib:
Kirkegaards Antikvariat
kir59563
København, Akademisk Arkitektforening by Chr. Cato 1929. Stort format (23,5 x 31,5 cm or app 9 x 12 inches). Original omslag. Lidt slitage ved ryg og rifter i kanten af omslag og lidt alderspletter men i øvrigt ren og meget velbevaret. Komplet. 1st printing. Very rare item indeed - some foxing and minor small tears to cover edge and wear to spine but solid. Overall very good copy, well preserved and clean inside. "Ib Andersen (Danish, 1907-1969) was barely out of school when he designed the poster, which also adorns the cover of the present original catalogue, to promote the 1929 exhibition of Buildings and Homes in Copenhagen, Denmark. The exhibition was a significant one, as it featured a built model of the “House of the Future,” as designed by Arne Jacobsen (Danish, 1902-71) and Flemming Lassen (Danish, 1902-1984). While the single-family “House of the Future” was among the most impactful presentations of the exhibition, it was just one of many proposed dwellings on display. Andersen’s poster featured a more generic illustration of urban apartment buildings instead of any particular exhibited project. The image, nods to two significant movements of the avant-garde: a Bauhaus inspired cityscape is punctuated by the primary color palette of the de Stijl school. While Andersen trained as an architect, he found his calling in the graphic arts. He continued to create posters and other advertisements throughout his career. However, from the mid-1920s until 1960, Andersen produced regular illustrations for Politiken, the leading Danish daily newspaper, and it was through this work that he established himself as a household name" (Caitlin Condell). This copy comes from the collection of Danish architect Kay Fisker but is not signed. Kay Fisker was onme of the main architects behind the exhibition. More photos available upon request!

Molesworth, Robert:
Kirkegaards Antikvariat
kir59836
London: Timothy Goodwin, at the Queen's Head against St. Dunstan's Church in Fleetstreet, 1694. 8vo in fine contemporary full marbled calf with decorated borderss and gilt title to spine. (42), 246 pp. With the armorial bookplate of Godfrey Bosville Esq. and handwritten Bosville names to front end papers and and the date 1732 to free endpaper at end. Hinges front and back with a later reinforcement, first and last pages with minor brownspotting else overall clean and in all a sound very good copy. Very rare copy of an original copy from 1694, third printing in the same year as the first, attractive in fine contemporary full marbled calf binding - the famous, though quite malicious book about Denmark and the Danes. Robert Molesworth was English ambassador at the Danish court from 1689 to 1692, when he almost fled after a range of incidents caused by his fiery temper. His book became a tremendous succes and was seen as a pamphlet against absolutism at all stages (also at the court of William and Mary), demonstrated in a most pure form in Denmark - where this book of course was banned. ** Molesworth's book is one of - if not the - most interesting book about Denmark ever written by a foreigner. Among it's many observations is one particularly precise description of the Danish national character: "I never knew any country, where the Minds of the People were more of one calibre and pitch than here; you shall meet none of extraordinary Parts or Qualifications, or excellent in particular Studies and Trades; you see no Enthusiasts, Mad-men, Natural Fools, or fanciful folks; but a certain equality of Understanding reigns among them: every one keeps the ordinary beaten road of sense... "Robert Moleswort's An Account of Denmark as it was in 1692 is a violent political pamphlet in the early British Whig-tradition aimed at underscoring republican values by pointing to the dreadful example of Danish Absolutist slavery. It was a bestseller on an international scale. In his book Molesworth linked the political system (Absolutism) with the lazy nationai character of the population and the ntellectual, cultural and economic backwardness of Denmark. A futile official Danish protest and several private and semi-officilal replies followed suit. The last and most interesting of these was Ludvig Holberg's Description of Denmark and Norway (1729) which counters Molesworth on the basis of history and natural law - and in a witty style. Thus the republican manifesto of Molesworth became instrumental in shaping the political outlook and language of the very moderate, loyal and anything but radical or republican Danish enlightenment mainstream." (Sebastian Olden-Jørgensen).

Published in Stuttgart by Kosmos, Gesellschaft der Naturfreunde / Franckh'sche Verlagshandlung, 1922 - 1931. 4° in the original uniform light blue hardcover binding. 272/367/364/335/267 pp. Richly illustrated with more than 1500 images. 3d-Brille and the original folded poster in volume five "Der Mensch als Industriepalast" is missing, however this copy comes with a new fine facsimile poster having the same measures as the original. Societe Belge de Librairie etc, Brüssel (Bruxelles), 1837 (1836 / 1835). 12° in three good uniform half leather bindings with gilt titles and marbled sidepaper. Stamps and names to inner covers and titlepages and the colors from the stamps going through to first pages else only occasional brownspotting and well preserved . Map with a small tear and one larger but no pieces missing and in attractive very good condition overall. More photos available upon request. Very rare early Brussels printing o"De la Démocratie en Amérique," a seminal work in political science and sociology. It examines the effects of democracy on society, culture, and political institutions in the United States, comparing it with European societies. Tocqueville analyzes concepts like equality of conditions and how they influence social behaviors and moral attitudes. The 1837 Brussels edition is a very rare contemporary printing and significant because it represents an early publication of Tocqueville's work in a different context than the original Parisian editions. The book's analysis of American democracy and its potential pitfalls resonated with European audiences and continues to be studied today". “One of the most important texts in political literature” (PMM).
