Well-preserved copy. * The first issue of the German edition of Andersen's stories, with 75 woodcut illustrations by Danish artist and naval officer Vilhelm Pedersen (1820-1859). Pedersen did the 112 + 13 illustrations to the Leipzig editions of Gesammelte Märchen (1849 & 1850). The illustrations were produced on the common initiative of Andersen himself and his German publisher Carl B. Lorck in Leipzig. Vilhelm Pedersen was hired to make drawings, which were sent to Leipzig to be cut into wood before printed and published. Lorck had the woodblocks cast in zink, that were sent back to Denmark. Though the Danish illustrated edition of 'Historier' (1855) preceded the German edition from 1856, the latter is printed with the original woodblocks.
