Most engraved illustrations, even small vignettes, with protective tissue paper. Elegantly bound untrimmed, preserving the orig. litographed front and back covers, in 2 elegant mid-20th century red half-morocco bindings (Ole Olsen). From the collection of Danish bibliophiles Sigurd and Gudrun Wandel (bookplate on front pastedown). Volume II with very slight staining. Spines very lightly faded and stained. Pages with slight foxing.

Pioneering work on Greece with focus on archaeological aspects by the Danish archaeologist Peter Oluf Brøndsted (1780-1842), who travelled and worked in Greece (then still under Osmannic rule) from 1810 to 1813. He participated in excarvations in Athens and elsewhere in the country. It took him more than a decade to get the first volumes of his account published, but he succeeded in getting it out in both a German and a French version - in a worthy, state-of-the art bibliophile publication. Lack of fundings caused the magnificent work - planned in eight volumes - to remain a torso. Brøndsted is thus considered a pioneer in modern classical archaeology, where the field work is considered a precondition for theoretical studies.
