JOYCE, James. - Fordham, Finn:
Kirkegaards Antikvariat
kir59932
Oxford University Press, 2013 (2007). 271 pp. Paperback. Fine clean copy. A "Critical introduction to Finnegans Wake and its genesis. Finn Fordham provides a survey of critical, scholarly, and theoretical approaches to Joyce's iconic masterpiece. He also analyses in detail the compositional development of certain key passages which describe the artist (Shem) and his project; the river-mother (ALP) and her "first kiss;" the Oedipal shooting of the universal father (HCE) by the priestly son (Shaun); and the bewitching and curious daughter (Issy). His analyses demonstrate 'genetic' ways of reading the text which illustrate its immense range and playfulness and how these qualities were generated in composition. As well as opening up the densely detailed textuality of the Wake in all its multiplicity, Fordham argues for a relation between the way the text was formed and key aspects of its thematic content: an uprising of particularity and detail against universality, absolutes, and generality. He shows that the proliferation of individuated textual details overwhelms any unitary concept to the text. And this reflects an idealized and utopian uprising as it overcomes centralizing singularity: Finnegans do wake up. "

Suhail Academy Lahore, 2011. Thick hardcover, with jacket. LVII, 890 pp. Some insignificant shelfwear and wear to outer edges else clean and overall a very good copy. Heavy and extra shipping will apply. Islamic Spirituality - Classical, Early & Medieval Works on Islamic Mysticism (Sufism): Ibn al-Farid or Ibn Farid; (1181 – 1234) was an Arab poet. His name is Arabic for "son of the obligator" (the one who divides the inheritance between the inheritors), as his father was well regarded for his work in the legal sphere. He was born in Cairo to parents from Hama in modern Syria, lived for some time in Mecca, and died in Cairo. His poetry is entirely Sufic and he was esteemed as the greatest mystic poet of the Arabs. Some of his poems are said to have been written in ecstasies. The poetry of Shaykh Umar Ibn al-Farid is considered by many to be the pinnacle of Arabic mystical verse, though surprisingly he is not widely known in the West. (Rumi, probably the best known in the West of the great Sufi poets, wrote primarily in Persian, not Arabic.) Ibn al-Farid's two masterpieces are The Wine Ode, a beautiful meditation on the "wine" of divine bliss, and "The Poem of the Sufi Way", a profound exploration of spiritual experience along the Sufi Path and perhaps the longest mystical poem composed in Arabic. Both poems have inspired in-depth spiritual commentaries throughout the centuries, and they are still reverently memorized by Sufis and other devout Muslims today.Publishers note: "His prose and poetry reflect his profound knowledge of the intellectual heritage of mankind. His understanding of traditional symbolism hardly finds a parallel in our times. His being multi-lingual gives him direct access to the repositories of knowledge. His understanding of world spirituality deepens his own spiritual experience. Farid is one of the outstanding masterpieces of Saraiki mystical poetry and belongs to the rich and illustrious tradition of wisdom poetry, or contemplative poetry in the Islamic civilization. It reaches heights of poetic excellence. It has expanded the Kafi genre in both its vertical and horizontal dimensions. It has revealed the essence of poetry which is a passionate openness on to the Transcendent, a passion intimately linked with knowledge participating in Truth, Beauty and Love. Understanding arid is a sequel to Dr. Shahzad Qaiser’s earlier work of translating Khawaja Ghulam Farid whose original text and translations have been kept. The verses of the Diwan, in the current work, have been explained for fostering a plain understanding of the doctrines, without going deep into the technicalities of metaphysics and its realisation, to facilitate an understanding of Khawaja Ghulam Farid’s experience of ‘love and gnosis’ and thereby his attainment of ‘deliverance and union’ within the traditional matrix.".

First edition. Scarce seperate printing of the important supplement to the 1755 publication "Introduction à l'histoire de Dannemarc, ou l'on traite de la religion, des loix, des moeurs & des usages des anciens Danois".Jean-Henri Mallet wrote this book while he was living in Denmark. Heather O’Donoghue notes in Old Norse-Icelandic Literature: A Short Introduction that Mallet “had been commissioned by the king of Denmark to write a scholarly work specifically designed to counter existing views of Scandinavia as a backward country” ´. Topics: Mythology, Norse, Old Norse poetry, Icelandic literature, Edda. ”Monumens de la mythologie” contains the first French translation of the Edda of Snorre, ”L’Edda des Islandois ou mythologie celtique”, the first ever to a non-Nordic language. The importance of Mallet’s work grew even more with the English translation, with notes and preface by bishop Thomas Percy in 1770, ”Northern antiquities: or a description of the manners, customs, religion and laws of the ancient Danes, and other Northern nations; including those of our own Saxon ancestors. With a translation of the Edda, or system of Runic mythology.” Inspired by it Macphearson wrote his songs of Ossian.

First edition.- "A critical but well-researched survey of occult and spiritual thought and history from roughly 1820-1910 by Scottish historian James Webb (1946 - 1980).
