BOTHE, W. (+) H. BECKER.
Herman H. J. Lynge & Søn A/S
lyn49390
Berlin, Springer, 1930. 8vo. In contemporary halv cloth with gilt lettering to spine. In "Zeitschrift für Physik", Bd. 66, 1930. Entire volume offered. Stamp to front free end-paper, otherwise fine and clean. Pp. 289-310. [Entire volume: VIII, 863 pp.]. First appearance of Bothe and Becker's seminal paper in which they found that if the very energetic alpha particles emitted from polonium fell on certain light elements, an unusually penetrating radiation was produced. Two years later this led directly to Chadwick's discovery of the neutron. "In 1930 Bothe and Becker detected a highly penetrative radiation from beryllium bombarded by alpha particles, and they assumed that it was gamma radiation. Bothe estimated the photon energy from the degree of absorption of the secondary electrons. When physicists studied this "beryllium radiation," estimating its energy constituted a problem, for it varied greatly according to the substance used as absorber. Chadwick later suggested that the radiation was particulate and consisted of a new particle, the neutron."

Haüy is well known for his importent works in mineralogy. Napoleon had nominated Haüy an honorary canon of Notre Dame, in 1803 he ordered him to write a textbook of physics for the newly instituted lycées. This book was outstanding for its clear, methodological expositionof physics, although mathemaical treatment of problems was lacking. His "Traite de Physique" brought him appointment to the Legion of Hoor in 1803.

(London, Richard Taylor and William Francis, 1853) 4to. No wrappers as extracted from "Philosophical Transactions" 1853, Vol. 143 - Part III. Pp. 397-406. Clean and fine. First appearance of this importent paper by Adams, - famous for his co-discovery with Le Verrier, of Neptune in 1846 - in which he introduces new mathematical methods in dealing with the pertubations of the Moon, raising a sharp scientific controversy, and correcting Laplace's great memoir of 1788."He (Adams) was elected fellow of Pembroke College in 1853, and shortly afterwards he presented to the Royal Society a remarkable paper (the paper offered) on the secular accleration of the moon's mean motion. This quantity was thought to have been definitively investigated by Pierre Simon de Laplace in 1788, but Adams showed that Laplace's solution was incorrect. In particular, Laplace had ignored a variation in solar eccentricity that introduces into the diffrential equations for the moon's motion a series of additional terms. Adams calculated the second term of series, on which the secular acceleartion depends....This paper caused a sharp scientific controversy, marked by angry chauvinism on the part of several French astronomers. Their attack stimulated a number of independent investigations of the subject, all of which confirmed Adams' results. The matter was definitely settles in his favor by 1861, but not without hard feelings."(DSB I, p. 54b).

Berlin, Julius Springer, 1928. 8vo. Bound in contemporary half cloth with gilt lettering, In "Zeitschrift für Physik", Band 47, 1928. Entire issue offered. Two stamps to title page, otherwise fine. Pp. 407-16 + one folded table. [Entire volume: VII, (1), 914 pp.]. First printing of Beck's important paper in which he anticipates the discovery of the neutron by four years, a seminal contribution to the discovery of the nuclear shell model. In 1914, Moseley introduced the periodic table and in 1925, Pauli explained the periodicity by enumerating the electrons fitting in shells surrounding the atomic nucleus."It became apparent that there are, in general, several different isotopes per element. [...] This was a problem of nuclear physics since isotopes of the same element differ only by their isotopes. A first attempt was made in late 1927 by Beck [the present paper] in Vienna, who compiled a comprehensive table of known isotopes [...] The paper written more than four years before the discovery of the neutron, is remarkable not so much for its results but for two nearly prophetic statements:" (Brandt. The Harvest of a Century, p. 317). The prophetic statements in the present paper are: 1. "Die einfachste Annahme, die man diesbezüglich machen kann, ist, dass man sich die Kerne, analog wie die Elektronenhülle der Atome, schalenförmig aufgebaut denkt." (i.e. The simplest assumption one can make in this respect it to imagine nuclei, in analogy to the electron hull of atoms, to be built up of shell).2. "Die Gesetzmässligkeiten der Tabellen lassen aber hoffer, dass das Pauliprinzipund der Spin sich auch auf dem Gebiet der Kerne als Wegweiser bewähren werden." (i.e. The regularities [observed in the table of isotopes] allow to hope that the Pauli principle and the spin will prove of value as guideposts also in the field of nuclei.).

(København, 1754). 4to. In recently blue paper covered card board binding with white paper-label title-label to front board. Previous owner's name to pasted down front end-paper. Annotations to front free end-paper. Without wrappers as issued in "Videnskabernes Selskabs Skrifter", nice and clean copy. Pp. 189-216. First edition of Kraft’s paper on contradictions in traditional theories of matter and composite substances. Kraft argues that the traditional physics and metaphysics is filled with contradictions, particularly regarding the divisibility of matter, the nature of space and time and the structure of reality. He suggests that Leibniz’s theory of monads or a similar concept of fundamental indivisible units provides a more consistent framework for understanding the physical world. The present paper is a fine example of 18th-century Enlightenment debates on the nature of matter, space and time,
