DUTROCHET, RENÉ JOACHIM HENRI. - A CLASSIC WORK ON OSMOSIS.
Herman H. J. Lynge & Søn A/S
lyn45515
(Paris, Crochard, 1835). No wrappers. In: "Annales de Chimie et de Physique, Par MM. Gay-Lussac et Arago.", 2e Series, tome 60, Cahier 4. Pp. 337-448 (entire issue offered). With htitle to vol. 60. Dutrochet's paper: pp. 337-368. First appearance of one of the classic papers in which Dutrochet investigated his discovery of OSMOSIS. "Dutrochet’s research on the phenomena of osmosis and diffusion (or endosmosis and exosmosis, as he not very aptly called them) and their applications to the study of previously unexplained vital phenomena attracted general attention. His chief observation was that certain organic membranes allow the passage of water but stop the molecules dissolved in it, so that between two solutions of different concentration, separated by such a membrane, water passes from the less concentrated to the more concentrated, even against gravity. Although the conditions of Dutrochet’s experiments were rather simple and did not allow of great accuracy, he made the first important steps toward the study of osmosis and diffusion."(DSB).Garrison & Morton: 670.

lyn49611
[Berlin, G. Reimer, 1861]. 4to. Without wrappers. Extracted from "Journal für die reine und angewandte Mathematik. Hrsg. von A.L. Crelle", 58. Bd. Fine and clean. Pp. 1-53. First appearance of Lipschitz's paper on the theory of the distribution of the static and dynamic electricity in conducting bodies."Lipschitz distinguished himself through the unusual breadth of his research. He carried out many important and fruitful investigations in number theory, in the theory of Bessel functions and of Fourier series, in ordinary and partial differential equations, and in analytical mechanics and potential theory. Of special note are his extensive investigations concerning n-dimensional differential forms and the related questions of the calculus of variations, geometry, and mechanics. This work-in which he drew upon the developments that Riemann had presented in his famous lecture on the basic hypotheses underlying geometry-contributed to the creation of a new branch of mathematics." His mathematical abilities, which manifested themselves quite early, attracted the attention of a number of prominent scholars, including Daniel Bernoulli, who in 1772 recommended him to Euler, then living in Russia, as a secretary. Fuss arrived in St. Petersburg at the age of seventeen and spent the rest of his life in Russia."(DSB).

First printing of an importent paper in which Planck tries to ecplains some of the difficulties with the quantum theory by pointing to the central exchange of energy between matter and radient energy and criticising Jean's theory."Planck explained his point of view in some detail in an article which he submitted (the paper offered) in January 1910... There he reviewed the main progress in radiation theory that had taken place since 1900, and also indicated his own attitude towards it. Two extreme points of view, he said, could be assumed. The most conservative way was raken by Jans, who had derived from the equations of classical mechanics and electrodynamics the classical radiation equation. Since the equation obviously disagreed with experiments, the necessity arose to find a way of modifying the equations of dynamics so as to include the existence of the quantum of action 'h'." DARWIN, G.H. - THE MOON THEORY.

lyn42402
(London, Harrison and Sons, 1880). 4to. No wrappers as extracted from "Philosophical Transactions" 1879, Vol. 171 - Part II. Pp. 539-593. First printing of a main paper by the "Father of Geophysics" in which he shows that the effect of the tides was to force a retreat of the moon from the earth - thus going backward in time in the history of the earth, he concludes that the earth had been in contact with the moon, and this represents the time at which the whirling earth threw off a portion of its outer crust by centrifugal action, loosing angular motion in that way."Darwin's most significant contribution to the history of science lies in his pioneering work in the application of detailled dynamical analysis to cosmological and geological problems. That many of his conclusions are now out of date should in no way diminish the historical interest in his experiments, nor the importent service thet he rendered cosmogony by the example he gave of putting various hypotheses to the test of actual calculations. Darwin's method remains a milestone in the development of cosmogony, and subsequent investigators have favored it over the merely qualitative arguments prevalent until that time."(DSB).

I now proceed to give an account of such investigations relating to this subject as havee engaged my attention during a long period of years."(John Dalton). - (Smith: John Dalton. A Bibliography.
