DARWIN, G.H. - ANNOUNCING THE "RESONANCE THEORY" OF THE ORIGIN OF THE MOON.
Herman H. J. Lynge & Søn A/S
lyn42425
(London, Harrison and Sons, 1880). 4to. No wrappers as extracted from "Philosophical Transactions", 1879, Vol. 170 - Part II. Pp. 447-538 and. 1 plate. Clean and fine. First appearance of an importent paper, announcing Darwin's so-called "Resonance Theory" of the origin of the moon, according to which the moon might have originated from the fission of a parent earth as the result of an instability produced by resonant solar tides."Darwin's most significant contribution to the history of science lies in his pioneering work in the application of detailled dynamical analysis to cosmological and geological problems. That many of his conclusions are now out of date should in no way diminish the historical interest in his experiments, nor the importent service thet he rendered cosmogony by the example he gave of putting various hypotheses to the test of actual calculations. Darwin's method remains a milestone in the development of cosmogony, and subsequent investigators have favored it over the merely qualitative arguments prevalent until that time."(DSB).

(Berlin, Uppsala & Stockholm, Paris, Almqvist & Wiksell, 1898). 4to. Without wrappers as extracted from "Acta Mathematica. Hrsg. von G. Mittag-Leffler.", Bd. 22, pp. 89-178. First edition. "As soon as he came into contact with the work of Riemann and Weierstrass on Abelian Functions and algebraic geometry, Poincaré was very much attracted by those fields. His papers on these subjects occupy in his complete works as much space as those on automorphic functions, their dates ranging from 1881 to 1911. One of his main ideas in these papers is that of "reduction" of Abelian functions. Generalizing particular cases studied b Jacobi, Weierstrass, and Picard, Poincaré proved the general "complete reducibility" theorem..."(DSB).

STIBOLT, ERNST WILHELM.
Herman H. J. Lynge & Søn A/S
lyn60504
Kiøbenhavn (Copenhagen), August Friderich Stein, 1784. 4to. Uncut unopened in recent plain wrappers. A very fine and clean copy printed on good paper. 50 pp. + folded plates. First appearance of Stibolt’s important dissertation on the fragility of ships. In 1780 Stibolt assumed the role of General Adjutant to the King, and he compiled several reports regarding the defensive structures on Christiansø. He also played a role in ship construction endeavors, notably contributing to the creation of the "unsinkable" defense frigate known as Hjælperen. This frigate was intended to participate in the Battle of Copenhagen in 1801. However, Stibolt's professional journey was marred by conflicts with Henrik Gerner, a renowned master shipbuilder who was regarded as a superior designer. Subsequently, disagreements emerged with Hohlenberg, a student of Gerner who later became a master shipbuilder. These conflicts took a toll on Stibolt's well-being. Following Henrik Gerner's passing in 1787, Stibolt was appointed as the interim master shipbuilder for the Danish navy in 1788. This temporary position was later confirmed as a permanent role in 1790. Stibolt's impressive portfolio encompassed the design and construction of approximately 39 vessels of diverse types, in addition to 37 smaller boats. This collection included four ships-of-the-line, five frigates, and numerous smaller ships. Notably, Stibolt's ship designs continued to be utilized, even beyond his lifetime, with additional ships, particularly brigs, being built based on his designs.

Second issue, with alterations and additional material, of Wilde's contribution to the origin of elements and his views on the newly created periodic system, including the first French translation. Wilde states in the preface [printed here for the first time] that: "The reprinting of this paper is all the more desirable, as some of the views set forth therein have been modified by subsequent investigatiors, without advancing much beyond what had already been accomplished; while, in other instances, there has been a distinct retrogression from the solid position which chemical philosophy had attained more than forty years ago." Henry Wilde (1833 - 1919) a wealthy individual from Manchester, England who used his self-made fortune to indulge his interest in electrical engineering. He invented the dynamo-electric machine, or self-energising dynamo, published in 1866. The machine was considered remarkable at the time, especially since Wilde was fond of spectacular demonstrations, such as the ability of his machine to cause iron bars to melt.
