(Paris, G. Masson, 1878). No wrappers. In: "Annales de Chimie et de Physique", 5e Series - Tome 15, Cahier Septembre 1878. Pp. 5-144. (Entire issue offered). Cailletet's paper: pp. 132-144, textillustrations of apparatus used. First appearance of a milestonepaper in chemistry in which Cailletet describes his invention of the liquedifaction-process of oxygen and 5 other gases - and a classic in Low-Temperature Chemistry."Cailletet is most famous for his investigations on the compression and liquefaction of gases. At the time there were still six gases that were considered permanen: oxygen, nitrogen, hydrogen, nitrogen dioxyde, acrbon monooxide, and acetylene. Liquefaction had not been achieved despite the use of what were considered ernomous pressures. At the end of 1877 and the beginning of 1878 Callitet liquefied all these gases shortly before Raoul Pictet, who employed a completely different procedure. Cailletet had, following Andrews, recognized the importence of the critical temperature, above which liquefaction of a gas does not take place. In order to produce the necessary ccoling, he had recourse to expansion, sometimes employing several expansions in a staged process. It was in this manner that he succeeded in liquefying oxygen by beginning with liquid ethylene and passing through the stage of liquid methane."(DSB III, pp. 11-12). Parkinson "Breakthroughs" 1877 C.

Pp. 465-533 and 10 lithographed plates (map, Peak of T., views, Jupiter, Spectra etc.). First printing of this report. "In 1856 Smyth led an expedition to the Peak of tenerife, primarely "to ascertain how much astronomical observation can be benefited by eliminating the lower third or fourth part of the atmosphere"...Financial support for this experiment was given by the British Admiralty, and moral support by the entire British scientific community. I addition to telescopic observations of planets and stars, Smyth measured the radiant heat of the moon; observed the solar spectrum and noted the lines of absorption were of terrestrial origin; and made various other observations of the meteorology, geology, and botany of the island."(DSB XII, p. 498-99).

Kiøbenhavn (Copenhagen), C.F. Holm, 1786. 8vo. Bound in a nice recent full calf binding with gilt lettering to spine. Double line gilt boarders of boards. A nice and clean copy. XVI, 414 pp. + 7 folded plates supplied in facsimile. First edition of Mohr’s important work on the economy and natural history of Iceland. “In 1780, the Faeroese naturalist, Nicolai Mohr (1742-90) was sent to Iceland specifically to investigate some of Olavius’ discoveries, such as graphite in Siglufjördur in the North which, it was believed, might be of economic significance. Mohr spent two summers in Iceland and travelled around the northern and eastern parts. He later wrote a book (the present) about his travels. Mohr concentrates on the economy and natural history of Iceland, but his book is written in the form of a travelogue, and his observations on all that he saw helped to build up a picture of conditions in Iceland at the time” (Caseldine, Iceland – Modern Processes and past Environments). Fiske p.402.

lyn39051
(Berlin, Haude et Spener, 1767). 4to. Without wrappers, as issued in "Mémoires de l'Academie Royale des Sciences et Belles-Lettres", tome XXI, pp. 191-230. First edition of Euler first work on the probability in lottery. He examines the Genoise Lottery, which was the first number lottery. As the name implies he asks for the probability that various sequences of numbers to be drawn."In the lottery here considered 90 tickets are numbered consecutevily from 1-90, and 5 tickets are drawn at random. The question may be asked, what is the chance that two or moree consecutive numbers should occur in drawing ? Such a result is called a sequence; thus, for example, if the numbers drawn are 4,5,6,27,28, there is a sequence of three and also of two. Euler considers the question generally." (Todhnuter).

The whole volume offered. First edition as a continuation of his paper from 1922 "Neubegründung der Mathematik. Erste Mitteilung"."This articlee, delivered as a lecture to the deutsche Naturforscher Gesellschaft in Leipzig, September 1922, is a sequel to (neubegründung...), and brings Hilbert's proof theory to maturity. Hilbert here introduces several technical refinements and clarification to his theory. Specifically: (i) he improves the formal system by adding a special sign for formal negation...(ii) he refines his account of the distinction between formal language and the metalanguage....(iii) he outlines a consistency proof for an elementary, quantifier-free formal system of number-theory. (iv) he begins to extend his proof theory to analysis and set theory....sketches a strategy for proving the consistency of a version of Zermel's axiom of choice for real numbers...(etc. etc). [Entire volume: VII, (1), 896 pp.]. First appearance of this important paper which explains certain aspects of atomic spectra in terms of the quantum mechanics of electron spinIn 1928 and 1929, shortly after von Neumann had begun publishing his landmark papers on the axiomatization of quantum mechanics, he and his friend Wigner (Nobel Laureate in physics, 1963) issued a series of papers on the spectra of v arious atoms, clarifying the data and putting it into rigorous mathematical form. "Sixty y ears later, in 1989, Hans Bethe was still calling these among the most remarkable of Johnny [v on Neumann's] works" (Macrae, John von Neumann, p. 146).
