(New York), American Telephone and Telegraph Compagny, 1959. Orig. printed wrappers. A stamp on frontwrapper and first leaf. "The Bell System Technical Journal", Volume 38, Number 3, pp. 611-907. The Shannon paper: pp. 611-656. First edition. "A study is made of coding and decoding systems for a continous channel with an additive gaussian noise and subject to an average power limitation at the transmitter. Upper and lower bounds are found for the error probability in decoding with optimal codes and decoding systems. These bounds are close together for signaling rates near channel capacity and also for signaling rates near zero, but diverge in between. Curves exhibiting these bounds are given." (Shannon p. 611). - Hook & Norman: 898.

LYELL, CHARLES. - GEOLOGY OF ETNA.
Herman H. J. Lynge & Søn A/S
lyn42300
(London, Taylor and Francis, 1858). 4to. No wrappers as extracted from "Philosophical Transactions", Vol. 148 - Part II, pp. 703-786 and 3 lithographed plates. (Map of Etna - Craters and Lava of 1852 & 1853 - Fossil leaves from Etna), 23 textillustrations. Firs printing of this importent investigation of the processes involved in the creation of volcanoes. Lyell had been convinced, in his study of Madeira and the Canaries, that the evidence on which Leopold von Buch had founded his his theory of craters of elevation (1825) was completely fallacious. Lyell "found that Etna had neither a linear axis nor a single center of upheaval. Instead he found two earlier centers of eruption in the Val del Bove. From each center the beds of lava sloped away in all directions, but beds of lava arising from Etna's modern center of eruption had flowed over and buried those from the earlier centers. Lyell considered this to be decisive evidence against the crater-of-elevationn theory because "although one cone of eruption may envelope and bury another cone of eruption, it is impossible for a cone of upheaval to mantle round and overwhelm another cone of upheaval so as to reduce the whole mass to one conical mountain.". He concluded that the conical form of Etna, as of all volcanoes, was entirely the result of the long-continued process of volcanic eruption."(DSB).Charles Lyell (1797-1875) probably accomplished more in the advancement of geological knowledge than any other one man. The world-wide influence of his treatises and textbooks established the principle of uniformitarianism.

FORCHHAMMER, G. - A PIONEER-WORK IN OCEANOGRAPHY.
Herman H. J. Lynge & Søn A/S
lyn42430
(London, Taylor & Francis, 1865) Large 4to. Without wrappers. Extracted from "Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society of London.", 1865, Vol. 155. Pp. 203-262. Clean and fine. First printing of Forchhammer's - the father of Danish geology - pioneer-work in oceanography and hydrography, as it is the first scientific investigation in this field of research. This large paper grew out of the Danish publication "Om Søvandets Bestanddele og deres Fordeling i Havet." (1859), but is much enlarged, augmented with new facts acquired by many new samples of sea-water from all ower the world. "It contains a determination as complete as possible of the distribution of the saline substances at the surfaces of the different parts of the sea, and in different depths at the same place."(Forchhammer)."Forchhammer's fundamental researches on the composition of seawater brought him international acclaim. He began this work in 1843, more as a geologist than as a chemist, to explain the phenomena that give rise to the deposits on the sea floor...He carried out analyses of over 160 samples collected for him over a twenty-year period by the Danish and British navies. He measures chlorine, sulfur, magnesium, calcium, and potassium gravimetrically with 100-pound samples, obtaining sodium from the differences....Forchhammer also posed in an elegant form the "geochemical balance problem" arising from the major sedimentary cycle: "Thus the quantity of the different elements in seawater is not proportional to the quantity of the elements which the river waters put into the sea, but inversely proportional to the facility with which the elements are made insoluble by general or organo-chemical action in the sea"" (DSB V: p. 72). The work was translated into English as "On the Components of Sea Water" (1865) in Phil. Transactions.

Titlepages to vol. 26 a. 30. Pp. 129-256 a. pp. 129-256. Fizeau & Foucault's paper: pp. 138-148 a. pp. 146-159, 2 folded engraved plates. Some scattred brownspots. First appearance of thispaper in which the authors demonstrated importent similarities between sound - and lightwaves, and that interference takes place between rays of light of different wavelenghts thus giving considerably evidence for the wave theory of light."By analyzing the white light source into simpler constituents by means of a spectroscope, Fizeau and Foucault were able to observe fringes produced by interfering light rays with a difference of travel equal to more than 7,000 wavelenghts, thus showing hat light waves, like sound waves, remain geometrically constant over a large number of periods. But light waves, because of their transverse vibrations, are more complex than sound waves. Light can assume different forms of planes of vibration as well as different intensities. Using the same spectroscopic apparatus as in the preceeding experiment, Fizeau and Foucault observed the interaction of two rays produced by passing a single polarized ray through a birefringent crystal. In this case, instead of obtaining alternating bands of light and dark, they obtained bands of light periodcally polarized in different planes of vibration."(DSB V, p. 19).
