(København, 1747). 4to. In a later half calf binding with gilt lettering to spine. Previous owner's name to pasted down front end-paper. Without wrappers as issued in "Videnskabernes Selskabs Skrifter, III. Del, 1747". A nice and clean copy. Pp. 213-296. + 3 engraved plates. First edition of one of Kraft's earliest and most important works, being a preliminary study to his seminal "Forelæsninger over Mekanik" (1763). It also constitute one of the earliest introductions to Newton in Danish. In 1747, he became a member of the Academy of Sciences, same year as the present thesis was published. Here, he takes a stand in favor of Newton against Descartes, in contrast to his admired teacher C. v. Wolff. Kraft concluded that while the Cartesian system was unreasonable and even inconsistent, Newton's physics perfectly aligned with the most reliable experiences, including the best astronomical observations. Furthermore, the Newtonian system was superior from a methodological standpoint, as it contained fewer hypotheses and was more simple and well-ordered than the Cartesian alternative.

London, Hodgson & Son, 1950. Royal 8vo. Volume 51 of "Proceedings of the London Mathematical Society. Second Series" Bound with all the six original front-wrappers for all six parts of the volume (bound in at rear) in a very nice contemporary blue full cloth binding with gilt lettering and gilt ex-libris ("Belford College. Univ. London") to spine. Minor bumping to extremities. Binding tight, and in excellent, very nice, clean, and fresh condition, in- as well as ex-ternally. Small circle-stamp to title-page ("Bedford College for Women"). Discrete library-markings and book-plate stating that the book was presented to the Library of Bedford College by "Professor H. Simpson./ 1949-50" to pasted-down front free end-paper. Library-label tipped in at front free end-paper. Pp. 161-175. [Entire volume: (4), 483 pp.]. First edition of one of the last articles by a key figure in Map-colour theory. Percy John Heawood, proved in 1890 that Alfred Kempe's Four-colour theorem was flawed and established his own five-colour theory. "Heawood was, however, able to salvage an important idea, that of Kempe chains, from Kempe's proof. Using Kempe's work, Heawood was able to prove that every map is 5-colorable." (Hilton, Mathematical vistas: from a room with many windows, 2002, p. 148 ). "It is not known how Heawood became aware of the Four-Color problem. However, his life's work in mathematics was centered on it. After his first paper, 1890, he published seven more papers on the same subject, the last in 1949 at the age of 88.", his biographer Gabor Dirac wrote. (Fritsch, Rudolf. The four color theorem: history, topological foundations, and idea of proof, 1998, 24 p).

In 1684 he was appointed to the Remonstrant Seminary faculty at Amsterdam. He made a lasting contribution to biblical studies as editor of three encyclopaedias: Bibliothèque universelle et historique (26 vol., 1686–93), Bibliothèque choisie (28 vol., 1703–13), and Bibliothèque ancienne et moderne (29 vol., 1714–30). (6), 442 pp. First edition of Michaelis’ work on Jeremiah and lamentation with commentaries on each chapter of the books with Latin, Greek, and Hebrew texts. In 1753, he had come up with the idea for the the Royal Danish Arabia Expedition (1761-1767) and had gotten the Danish minister Bernstoff to agree to it. In 1760, when the expedition was becoming a reality, Michaelis recommended Niebuhr as a participant, and he outlined the entire purpose of the trip - namaly the list of 100 questions that he prepared and published for the members of the expedition, in order for them to answer in the course of the voyage. For all intents and purposes, Michaelis was the spiritual father of the Arabia-expedition.

.London, Printed by Taylor and Francis - Published by the Author, (1862-) 73. Folio. Papersize 52,5x36,5 cm. Lithographed and fully handcoloured. 2 adults on a rock, male and female. J. Gould & H.C. Richter, del. et lith. - Walter, Imp. Fine and clean. Ab. a half cm. of right margin with remains of textpaper, not affecting image in any way..The plate is accompanied with the original textleaf. (2) pp. This is an original plate from Goulds great work "The Birds of Great Britain", issued between 1862 and 1873. The plates in this work were executed by Gould himself, and a few by J. Wolf, H.C. Richer and Hart. Together with Audubon's plates, the Gould-plates are considered the best bird-art ever produced, AND THE PLATES IN HIS "BIRDS OF GREAT BRITAIN" ARE THE PEAK OF GOULD'S ARTISTIC LIFE. In the foreword Gould stresses the difference from his "Birds of Europe" in the treatment of the illustrations, the inclusion here of the figures of the baby birds and nests, and he comments "Many of the public are quite unaware how the colouring of these large plates is accomplished; and not a few believe that they are produced by some mechanical process or by chromo-lithography. This, however is not the case; every sky with its varied tints and every feather of each bird were coloured by hand; and when it is considered that nearly two hundred and eighty thousand illustrations in the present work have been so treated, it will most likely cause some astonishment to those who give the subject a thought.". Elsewhere he remarked upon employing "almost all colourists in London." - Wood p. 364. - Nissen No. 372. - Sitwell 102. - Zimmer pp. 261-62. - Not in Jean Anker.

Leipzig, Laurentius Sigism. Cornerus, 1665. Contemp. full vellum, but back to wide as another work has been taken out. Engraved frontisp. (30),391,(30) pp. Some light browning to leaves. On verso of frontispiece a note in contemporary hand. Scarce second edition of Wower's Polymathia presented as a fragment of a greater work he was writing "De Studia Veterum", i.e. on the intellectual pursuits of the ancients, or on the studies to which the ancients devoted themselves, by which he meant the "artes liberales" as appears from the plan of the work printed at the beginning of the "fragment". The "studia veterum" in Wower's eyes, the model and the point of departure from any studia of the moderns. The work concerns one of the great "artes liberales", namely "Grannatice". He tries to extract a theory of "grammatice" out of the staggering testimonies of ancient testimonies (from the third BC to the end of Antiquity), as though they were all campatible with each other, which they are not. (Benetto Bravo, Critice and Historical Criticism). - Not in Brunet . Not in Graesse.
