EULER, [LEONHARD].

lyn44268
(Berlin, Haude et Spener, 1753). 4to. No wrappers as issued in "Memoires de l'Academie Royale des Sciences et Belles Lettres". tome VII, pp. 305-330 + two engraved plates. First printing of Euler's paper on how to raise water, which was a study written on the background of his - unsuccessful - garden-project in Frederick the Great's large complex of summer palaces, Sanssouci where Euler was asked to design the pumps to the many fountains. "I wanted to make a fountain in my Garden", Frederic the Great wrote to Voltaire on 25 January 1778. But the water-art project ended in a fiasco. The fountain design was supposed to be executed according to the latest knowledge in hydraulics and should even surpass Versailles with its splendor. "Euler calculated the effort of the wheels for raising the water to a basin, from where it should fall down through canals, in order to form a fountain jet at Sans-Souci. My mill was constructed mathematically, and it could not raise one drop of water to a distance of fifty feet from the basin."Since then the fiasco at Sanssouci stands out as an example for the gulf between theory and practice. And Leonhard Euler, the mathematical genius from Basel, became a target of mockery and malicious joy". (Michael Eckert: Euler and the Fountains of Sanssouci).See Enetröm E202.

London, Printed by Taylor and Francis - Published by the Author, (1862-) 73. Folio. Papersize 54,5x36,5 cm. Lithographed and fully handcoloured. An adult on a branch with fruits.. J. Gould & H.C. Richter, del. et lith. - Walter, Imp. Fine and clean. Half a cm. added to right margin, not affecting print or image. The plate is accompanied with the original textleaf. (2) pp. This is an original plate from Goulds great work "The Birds of Great Britain", issued between 1862 and 1873. The plates in this work were executed by Gould himself, and a few by J. Wolf, H.C. Richer and Hart. Together with Audubon's plates, the Gould-plates are considered the best bird-art ever produced, AND THE PLATES IN HIS "BIRDS OF GREAT BRITAIN" ARE THE PEAK OF GOULD'S ARTISTIC LIFE. In the foreword Gould stresses the difference from his "Birds of Europe" in the treatment of the illustrations, the inclusion here of the figures of the baby birds and nests, and he comments "Many of the public are quite unaware how the colouring of these large plates is accomplished; and not a few believe that they are produced by some mechanical process or by chromo-lithography. This, however is not the case; every sky with its varied tints and every feather of each bird were coloured by hand; and when it is considered that nearly two hundred and eighty thousand illustrations in the present work have been so treated, it will most likely cause some astonishment to those who give the subject a thought.". Elsewhere he remarked upon employing "almost all colourists in London." - Wood p. 364. - Nissen No. 372. - Sitwell 102. - Zimmer pp. 261-62. - Not in Jean Anker.

Kjøbenhavn, Arnold Busck, 1933. Royal8vo. In the original printed wrappers. A few nicks to extremities and previous owner's name to half title. Otherwise a very fine and clean copy. 162 pp. First printing of the influential Danish biochemist and physiologist Henrik Dam's thesis on the biological significance of the sterines. Dam was awarded the Nobel Prize in medicine in 1943 for his work in discovering vitamin K and its role in human physiology, the present work being a seminal step towards this. "During the years 1932 and 1933 Dam worked at the laboratory of Rudolf Schoenheimer in Freiburg, Germany, thanks to a Rockefeller fellowship he obtained to further his studies of the metabolism of sterols. In 1933 he received the D.Sc. in biochemistry at the University of Copenhagen with a thesis entitled Nogle undersøgelser over sterinernes biologiske betydning (Some Investigations on the Biological Significance of the Sterols). The next year Dam worked with Paul Karrer in Zurich. He continued to hold his post as associate professor until his appointment as professor of biochemistry at the Polytechnic Institute in Copenhagen. This appointment, however, was in absentia, because since 1940 Dam was on a lecture tour to the United States and Canada under the auspices of the American-Scandinavian Foundation. The tour was planned before the occupation of Denmark by German troops in April 1940." (DSB).

Akademie der Wissenschaften", Bd. CXXIII, Abt. IIa, Dezember, 1914. A very fine and clean copy. 25 pp. First printing of Smolukowski's important paper on molecule statistics, emulsion and their connection to Brownian Motion. Einstein and Smolukowski work simultaneously and independently in the beginning of the 1900ies Brownian Motion. Smolukowski continued his work in this field and he work is distinct from Einstein's since Einstein said nothing of the collisions between a Brownian particle and the surrounding molecules."From about 1900 Smoluchowski worked on Brownian movement. He wished to use experimental data to verify the theory he had obtained desire complicated by the confused situation of experimental research. In the meantime Einstein, in papers of 1905 and 1906, had presented a solution to the problem. Smoluchowski then decided to publish his results in 1906, which presented his different method. Einstein started from general relations of statistical physics, an approach that was universal but did not lend itself to visualization. For example, Einstein said nothing of the collisions between a Brownian particle and the surrounding molecules. Smoluchowski started by examining the effects of successive collisions and obtained a final formula that differed little from Einstein's. Smoluchowski's further works in this field extend through an examination of the Brownian movement of a particle undergoing the influence of a quasi-elastic force to the Brownian movements of macroscopic bodies. At the Conference of Natural Scientists at Münster in 1912, Smoluchowski proposed the observation of the Brownian rotative movement of a small mirror suspended on a thin quartz fiber and the observation free end of a similar fiber. The first experiment was performed by W. Gerlach and E. Lehrer in 1927, and later by Eugen Kappler; the second, by A Houdijk and P. Zeeman, and by E. Einthoven. In 1925, Both experiments confirmed Smoluchowski's calculations."

(New York), American physical Society, 1962. Lex8vo. Volume 9, No. 1, July 1, 1962 of "Physical Review Letters", In the original printed blue wrappers. A very nice and clean copy externally as well as internally, near mint. Pp. 36-44. [Entire issue: (2), 46 pp]. First edition of this seminal paper in which the discovery of the muon neutrino was first announced. The muon neutrino is the second of the three neutrinos and it forms the second generation of leptons. Jack Steinberger, Leon Lederman and Melvin Schwartz were awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in the year 1988, "for the neutrino beam method and the demonstration of the doublet structure of the leptons through the discovery of the muon neutrino". In 1934 Enrico Fermi had solved the major problem of beta decay: How do electrons come out of the nucleus if there are non to begin with? Pauli had named his proposed light particle a neutron. James Chadwick had named his much more massive nuclear particle a neutron as well which left the two particles with the same name. Fermi therefore, to solve the confusion, coined the term neutrino (Italian diminutive of neutron). Speculations in the early 1940ies were centered on whether it would be possible to find even smaller parts of an atom. "The experiment used a beam of the AGS's energetic protons to produce a shower of pi mesons, which traveled 70 feet toward a 5,000-ton steel wall made of old battleship plates. On the way, they decayed into muons and neutrinos, but only the latter particles could pass through the wall into a neon-filled detector called a spark chamber. There, the impact of neutrinos on aluminum plates produced muon spark trails that could be detected and photographed -- proving the existence of muon-neutrinos. The experiment's use of the first-ever neutrino beam paved the way for scientists to use these particles in research at the AGS and around the world."(Nobel Prize, Brookhaven National Laboratory) "Following the discovery of a second neutrino associated with the muon - the Muon neutrino - at Brookhaven in 1962 by L. Lederman, M. Schwartz, J. Steinberger, and collaborators, a new neutrino program was started in CERN in 1963. Using a spark chamber set-up and a heavy liquid bubble chamber exposed to the new high quality neutrino beam the discovery was confirmed with high statistics". (Krige, John. History of CERN, 1996, p. 433).

[Entire volumes: VII, (1), 832 pp; VII, (1), 831 pp. First printing of Hückel's seminal papers which together constitute the The Hückel method or Hückel molecular orbital method (HMO)."In the 1931-1932 period, Hückel published three long papers on aromatic and unsaturated molecules, the first providing a quantum theoretical description of benzene (1931, 1932). This was his habilitation thesis leading to the venia legendi (right to teach) in theoretical physics at the Technische Hochschule Stuttgart. In this paper Hückel gave two descriptions of benzene: his first method, which eventually came to be known as the valence bond method, and a second, which involved the application of molecular orbital methods. Hückel believed that the experimental data gave him good reasons for preferring the second approach, which was utilized by John Lennard-Jones, Hund, and Robert Mulliken. This second approach is widely known as the HMO method (Hückel’s molecular orbital method)." (DSB).

Pp. 1017-1076 and pp. 1387-1462. Raoult's papers: pp. 1030-33 (tome 95) and pp. 1430-1433 (tome 104). First appearance of Raoult's two importent papers in which described a method for finding the molecular weight of an organic compound by the determination of the lowering of the freezing point of water that resulted from dissolving that compound in water and the law governing the relation between solutes and vapor pressure."Then in 1882, F.-M. Raoult published his results on the effects of nondissociating organic solutes, from which he deduced a general law controlling the lowering of freezing points (the first paper offered). Four years later he extended this work to show the effect of solutes on vapor pressure (the second paper offered). Having established the effect of nondissociating compounds, he was in position to show that salts produced an eeffect which, though anomalous, could nevertheless be explained by the supposition that a dissolved molecule broke up into other molecules. This work was of great value in supplying a new method for determining molecular weights, since the depression of freezing point and vapor pressure (as well a the related rise in boiling point later discovered) are proportional to the moleculat concentrations ofthe solutions; it was of equal value in supporting the ideas of van't Hoff on osmotic pressure. With the announcement of the dissociation theory of Arrhenius, the anomalies were explained and the full significance of the generalizations of Raoult was recognized. Raoult published the formulations of his laws in the "Comptes Rendus" for 1882 and 1887 (the papers offered)" (Leicester a. Klickstein "A Source Book in Chemistry", pp. 471 ff).

The manuscript was presumably made by De Løwenørn (Kommandør-Kaptajn Friderich de Løwenørn). Captain lieutenant Poul de Løwenørn assisted the Danish crown in establishing the Royal Danish Nautical Chart Archive. He was appointed the institution’s first Director. At this time, only France had a similar institute. "In the first instance, the Danish Admirality requested Løwenørn to collect all existing nautical charts and navigational details in the country, for both Danish and international waters. He was to develop accurate and reliable charts for both the Navy and Merchant Marine. In addition to these formidable tasks, Løwenørn also took the initiative to establish a Lighthouse Authority, a Buoy Authority and a Pilot Authority as well as improve the country’s harbours." Kopenhagen, Christ. Gottl. Proft, 1793. 8vo. Uniformly bound in two contemporary full calf bindings with five raised bands and gilt lettering to spine. Small paper-label to top of spines. A few stains to boards, spine miscoloured. Internally nice and clean. XVIII, 253, (1) pp.; XXXII, 199, (3), 138 pp. Second improved edition of the first German translation of Paine's seminal "The Rights of Man": "the textbook of radical thought and the clearest of all expositions of the basic principles of democracy" (PMM). The work was written as a response to Burke's "Reflections on the Revolution in France" from 1790, in which Burke voices his distrust of the "Perfectibilitarians" and of the mere destructive criticism of institutions and concludes that the French revolutionaries are not fighting for real liberty and that they have no idea what it would take for them to "form themselves into a mass which has a true political personality". Reacting to Burke's excpression of the horror and dismay that the liberal-minded now felt for the French revolutionaries, Paine defends the French Revolution against Burke's attacked. He famously lays down the principles of fundamental human rights that must stand no matter what, no matter what is necessary to obtain them, and he argues that popular political revolution is permissible when a government does not safeguard its people, their natural rights, and their national interests. Paine himself condered the work "one of the most useful and benevolent books ever offered to mankind". It was indeed hugely popular, hugely controversial, and hugely influential. Although suppressed on the day of publication, the modified version was quickly printed and reprinted. It was very widely circulated, with copies being read aloud in inns and coffee houses. Although the Revolution controversy had spawned more than 300 pamphlets, Pain's "Rights of Man" was the first seriously to damage Burke's case and to restore credit to the French both in Britain and America. The publication of Rights of Man caused a furor in England; Thomas Paine was tried in absentia, and convicted for seditious libel against the Crown, but was unavailable for hanging, having departed England for Africa.
