München, Piper & Co, (1958). Lex 8vo. Original blue full cloth binding with original dust-jacket in red and black with white and grey lettering. Dust-jacket with nicks and tears to extremities. A few underlinings to the first leaves. With the bookplate of the famous American educator Paul Arthur Schilpp. 506, (6, -advertisements). Inscribed by the author to front free end-paper: "Herrn College Schilpp/ in alter Dankbarkeit/ Karl Jaspers". And with the inscription "Basel, den 7. August 1958" underneath. First edition, presentation-copy, of Jasper's main work in political philosophy, "The Atom Bomb and the Future of Man", in which Jaspers outlines his humanist doctrine. It is in this work that we find most explicitly expressed his ideas on the importance of the social and collective conditions of human integrity. The work became greatly influential. The German philosopher and psychiatrist Karl Theodor Jaspers (1883-1969) was one of the main exponents of existentialism in Germany and he had an enormous impact on theology, psychiatry and philosophy of his time. Later on, his works in political philosophy came to exersize an even greater influence upon 20th century thought. "Karl Jaspers (1883 - 1969) began his academic career working as a psychiatrist and, after a period of transition, he converted to philosophy in the early 1920s. Throughout the middle decades of the twentieth century he exercised considerable influence on a number of areas of philosophical inquiry: especially on epistemology, the philosophy of religion, and political theory. His philosophy has its foundation in a subjective-experiential transformation of Kantian philosophy, which reconstructs Kantian transcendentalism as a doctrine of particular experience and spontaneous freedom, and emphasizes the constitutive importance of lived existence for authentic knowledge. Jaspers obtained his widest influence, not through his philosophy, but through his writings on governmental conditions in Germany, and after the collapse of National Socialist regime he emerged as a powerful spokesperson for moral-democratic education and reorientation in the Federal Republic of Germany." (SEP).Paul Arthur Schilpp (1897 - 1993) was famous an American educator. He was born in Germany and immigrated to the United States prior to World War I. Schilpp taught at Northwestern University, University of the Pacific and spent the last years of his professional career teaching undergraduate philosophy courses at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. He was considered a serious and driven teacher of moral decision and thought, often controversial. He was known for his passionate teaching methods and highly energetic delivery. For many years he was the editor of the Library of Living Philosophers. As editor he was able to convince people like Albert Einstein to contribute to the library.

London, Christopher Meredith, 1647. 4to. In contemporary full calf. Wear and soiling to extremities. Dampstain throughout. (8), 380, (2), 127 pp. Rare second edition of Elton’s work containing a compendium of moral teaching based on the Ten Commandments. Elton was a conforming clergyman within the English Church: “Even so, the book was condemned because it was “not conformable to the discipline of the Church of England”. We know more about its licensing history than we do of most books because its authorizer, Daniel Featly, who was called before the King for licensing it once the book was condemned, wrote about it a few years later in Cygnea Cantio. According to Featly, he helped Elton edit and revise the book while he was alive but once the author died, he “the off intermeddling in such a work wherein I could not suffer all things to passe as they were in that copy… yet the booke tooke the libertie to flie out of the Presse without license” (Clegg, Press Censorship in Jacobean England). Edward Elton (1569–1624) was an English Puritan, and a pastor at St. Mary Magdalen Church, Bermondsey.

Kjøbenhavn, Gyldendalske Boghandel (F. Hegel), 1872. 8vo. Bound in contemporary half calf with 4 raised bands and gilt lettering to spine. Spine rubbed. A few light brownspots throughout. Otherwise a fine and clean copy. (10), XIII, 605, (1) + 1 plate. The Scarce first Danish edition (translated from the 5. edition) of Darwin's monumental "On the Origin of Species". "In 1872 the book was translated into Danish by the young botanist J. P. Jacobsen. He was soon to become a celebrated novelist famous for Marie Grubbe - A Lady of the Seventeenth Century (1876) and Niels Lyhne (1880). In the early 1870's, however, he was still dedicated to science. In 1873 he received the University of Copenhagen's Gold Medal for his work on desmids, single-celled green freshwater algae. The Descent of Man was also translated by Jacobsen and appeared in 1874-75. "In the early 1870s [With the Danish translation] the literary critic Georg Brandes started promoting Darwin's ideas as part of his liberal ideology and soon Darwinism became the mark of a new generation of intellectuals. Both the Steenstrup circle and the Brandes circle held Darwin in high esteem, but made completely different attributions to his theory. Consequently they both decided to raise money separately for the same Darwin. Darwin had borrowed the collection of barnacles from the Zoology Museum in Copenhagen with the help of Steenstrup. As a compliment Darwin sent him a signed copy of the Origin. Steenstrup acknowledged Darwin as an important fellow naturalist, but like many of his colleagues at the University of Copenhagen he never accepted evolutionary theory. The initial scientific reaction to Darwin's work on evolution by means of natural selection was respectful, but made few converts. memorial in 1882. Independently, Darwinism transformed as it became part of popular culture. "(Kjærsgaard, Darwinism comes to Denmark)Freeman: 643. (PMM 344 - first edition)

Berlin, G. Reimer, 1850. Contemp. hcalf, profusely gilt spine. XXXII,622 pp. In: "Fortschritte der Physik im Jahre 1847. Dargestellt von der physikalischen Gesellschaft zu Berlin". III. Jahrgang. Redigirt von G. Karsten. XLIV,703 pp. Stamp on titlepage. Helmholtz's paper: pp. 232-245. Clean and fine. First printing of Helmholtz's own report on the meeting of the 23rd of July 1847 in the Physical Society of Berlin. In the meeting he presented with great success his groundbreaking paper "Ueber die Erhaltung der Kraft". In the paper printed in the "Fortschritte", Helmholtz summarizes the main mathematical and historical features of his Conservation of Energy-principle as it was laid down in "Ueber die Erhaltung der Kraft"."On July 21 he (Helmholtz) announced to du Bois-Reymond that he would bring forward his 'Conservation of Energy' on the 23rd at the Physical Society. The meeting was one of the most memorable in the annals of the Society; as du Bois tells us, Helmholtz revealed himself at one bound, to the surprise of all his friends, as a master of mathematical physics. The members of the Physical Society were acquainted with the Law of the Conservation of Energy when it was still unknown to all the rest of the world."(Leo Koenigsberger in "Hermann von Helmholtz", pp. 38).In his groundbreking work Helmholtz announced the first comprehensive statement of the first law of thermodynamics: All modes of energy, heat, light, electricity, and all chemical phenomena, are capable of transformation from one to the other but are indestructible and cannot be created. Helmholtz offered his paper to Poggendorf's 'Annalen', but the editor declined to publish so dangerous a speculation. Helmholtz had it printed at his own expense in a small number in 1847.

London, Richard Taylor, 1834-35. 4to. No wrappers as extracted from "Philosophical Transactions", 1835 - Part I. Titlepages to the volume present. (2),95-144. Both papers clean and fine. First appearance of this groundbreaking paper in which Hamilton develops the whole of theoretical dynamics by the aid of one function only, his 'Characteristic' or 'Principal' Function. He applies his method to a case of planetary motion, using a system of canonical elements" (Introduction, The Mathematical Paper of Sir William Rowan Hamilton, xiii). Hamilton then argues that the "tool of the characteristic function could also be applied to reformulate the fundamental laws of dynamics; thus the actual motion of mass point in a field of forces, e.g., is found to be governed by equations that are the analogues of those determining the propagation of the rays of light. Hamilton's optical-mechanical analogy, not only provided a new and more powerful formulation of classical mechanics but also, came to form the foundation of the Schrödinger scheme of quantum mechanics, e.g., wave mechanics.
