Kiøbenhaffn (Copenhagen), (Henrich Waldkirch), 1598. 4to. In contemporary vellum with yapp edges. Soiling and a few stains and marks to extremities. With four-line annotation in contemporary hand to pasted down front end-paper: "Denne bog hórer mig till / Bertill Bernhill oc haver/ jeg kiöbt hendom af Niels / bogförer i Helsingør 1598". (i.e. English: "This book belongs to me / bought from Niels bookseller in Elsinore 1598")Occassional marginal dampstains throughout, otherwise internally nice and clean. 106 ff. First Danish edition (it was first published in German the previous year) of the first official description of the coronation of King Christian IV. August Erich himself attended the coronation festivities, so it contains firsthand descriptions of the ceremony, the processions with decorations and costumes, fireworks, musical instruments, jousting, etc. The first official coronation description, published in 1597, was written in German by the king's secretary in the German Chancellery, August Erich, who identified himself as an eyewitness to the events. This description was primarily aimed at the northern German regions where Christian IV had or sought influence, and it can be seen as a follow-up to the previous tour of northern German towns that the un-crowned Christian undertook in 1595. Erich's coronation description was translated into Danish in 1598 (The present work) by court chaplain Andreas Benedict Dallin, who added more detailed information. Dallin's coronation description was clearly intended for a Danish audience, with the aim of strengthening and justifying Christian IV's domestic position in relation to the nobility as well as the citizens and common people. London, Miles Flesher, 1649. Folio (285 x 195 mm). In contemporary full with five raised bands. Small paper-label pasted on to top of spine. Wear to extremities, especially back board with numerous scratches and a few holes in leather, making the wooden boards visible. Lower part of back hinge split. A few annotation in contemporary hand to front free end-paper. Internally with marginal browning and a few worm-tracts. (26), 173 [i.e. 179], (9), 90, (9), 221, (6) pp. Fourth edition of Byfield’s commentary of The Epistle to the Colossians being the twelfth book of the New Testament written by Paul, the first edition being from 1615. “The present Commentary is a fine specimen of Puritan exposition, indicating an extensive and intensive knowledge of the Word of God, and great soundness of judgment, and great faithfulness in dealing with the hearts and consciences of men. There is no eloquence in it, but a serious, earnest desire is manifest to keep back nothing of the counsel of God ; and we are much mistaken if ministers do not find it profitable, as suggestive of many hints which may enrich their own expositions of this Epistle.” (From the introduction to the 1849 reprint).

Paris, L'Imprimerie Royale, 1732. 4to. Without wrappers. Extracted from "Mémoires de l'Academie des Sciences. Année 1730". Pp. 452-507 a. 1 folded engraved plate. With titlepage to Année 1730/1732. Titlepage with small tears to margins. Clean and fine. First appearance of this importent paper in which Reaumur reveled how he constructed his invention of the thermometer scale, the scale which bears his name. The construction of the thermometer was based on alchohol, and the scaling bases on 0 degree for the freezing point of water and 80 degree for the boiling point of water."The one serious drawback to Réaumur’s thermometer was that different strengths of alcohol have different coefficients of dilation, so that while one type of alcohol might expand one degree after the application of a certain amount of heat, another might expand two degrees under the same conditions. It was vital that all thermometers scaled according to his system have the same grade of alcohol. Réaumur suggested that the alcohol used in his thermometers be of a type that would dilate 80 degrees - that is, 8 parts in 100 - between the temperature of ice and the temperature at which the alcohol began to boil in an open thermometer tube. Owing to an unfortunate confusion of language in his article on the thermometer, however, nearly everyone believed that 80° on his scale was the temperature of boiling water; and as a result, when so-called Reaumer thermometers began to be made by the artisans of Paris, they were nearly all scaled linearly with respect to two fiducial points, 0° for ice and 80° for boiling water." Berlin, Springer, 1924. 8vo. In contemporary halv cloth with gilt lettering to spine. In "Zeitschrift für Physik", Bd. 26, 1924. Entire volume offered. Stamp to front free end-paper and titlepage, otherwise fine and clean. Pp. 178-81. [Entire volume: IV, 401 pp.]. First appearance of Bose's seminal paper in which he succeeded in deriving the Planck blackbody radiation law without reference to classical electrodynamics. Einstein was extremely impressed by Bose's paper and translated it into German himself. Shortly after Einstein made a generalization of Bose's method which led to the first of two systems of quantum statistical mechanics, known as the Bose-Einstein statistics. Paul Dirac coined the term "boson" for particles that obey these statistics and later physics historian Abraham Dirac described it as a "confused masterpiece", (Pais, Inward Bound, P. 283). "With their work Bose and Einstein established the field of quantum statistics one year before the appearance of quantum mechanics" (Brandt, The Harvest of a Century, P. 139)."In July 1924 he sent a short manuscript entitled "Plancks Gesetz und Lichtquantenhypothese" to Albert Einstein for criticism and possible publication. Einstein himself translated the paper into German and had it published in the Zeitschrift für Physik later that year. He added a note that stated: "In my opinion Boses derivation of the Planck formula signifies an important advance. The method used also yields the quantum theory of the ideal gas as I will work out in detail elsewhere." (DSB)."2 July 1924. Satyendra Nath Bose introduces a new coarse-grained statistical counting procedure which leads to Planck's radioation law. [...] Bose's discovery of a new statistics for photons and Einstein's extension to material gases - including the phenomenon of BE condensation - were made well before anyone had ever heard of a Schroedinger wave function. Bose's derivation of Planck's law is a confused masterpiece. His reasoning is correct but, as he himself once said, he had no idea that it was novel. The Paper also contains the discovery of BE condensation, an effect without application at that time." (Pais, Inward Bound, P. 283-4).The present volume contains the following papers of interest:Fermi: Über die Wahrscheinlichkeit der Quantenzustände.Hahn & Meitner: Über die Rollen der beta-strahlen beim Atomzerfall.Heisenberg: Über den Einfluss der Deformierbarkeit der Ionen auf optische und chemische Konstanten. Light occassional marginal miscolouring, otherwise a fine copy. (20), 907 pp. The rare first printing of Featley's 21 of the sermons preached by him in the English ambassador's chapel in Paris. The work also contain a fine example of 'ars memorativa': "Perhaps the most instructive, because most explicit case of the arsmemorativa functioning both as a topic of discussion and structuring principle for homiletic discourse is Daniel Featley's Clavis Mystica (1636). Featley served as chaplain to Charles I. Although his sermons are by no means the apogee of the genre, his work exemplifies the commonplace attitude toward the interplay of mnemonic emblems and admonitory sermons in the seventeenth century" (www . biblicalcyclopedia . com) "Daniel Featley was educated as a chorister of Magdalen College. He was admitted scholar of Corpus Christi College 13 Dec. 1594, and probationer fellow 20 Sept. 1602. having taken his B.A. degree 13 Feb. 1601. He proceeded M.A. 17 April 1606, and became noted as a disputant and preacher. In 1607 he delivered an oration at the funeral of John Rainolds, president of Corpus, his godfather and benefactor. In 1610 and the two following years he was in attendance as chaplain upon Sir Thomas Edmondes [q. v.], the English ambassador at Paris, and was noticed for his fearless attacks upon the Roman Catholic doctrines and his disputations with the Jesuits." Some smaller nicks, creases and loss of paper to extremities. Minor loss to capitals and two smaller holes w. a bit of loss to hinges. Overall an excellent copy in the fragile wrappers, rarely seen in such fine condition. Internally some minor brownspotting throughout, due to the paper-quality. With the ownership signature of J.B. Dumont deted "Sept. '21" to title-page and his stamp on half-title. 445 pp. The rare first edition of Bloch's first major work, "The Spirit of Utopia", an expressionalist main work, which attempts to unite Marxism with Jewish-Christian messianism. The hugely influential German philosopher Ernst Bloch (1885-1977) was born as the son of Jewish parents in Ludwigshafen. He studied philosophy, physics, German and music in Munich and Würzburg and later became a main figure in Neomarxism. His first book, "Geist der Utopie" was written while Bloch was in exile in Switzerland during the First World War, and in this seminal work we find the cornerstones of his later so influential philosophy. In the "Spirit of Utopia", Bloch unites Marxism Jewish-Christian messianism by the common utopian element of both views: Hope, and faith in the fact that the world will and can become a better place. Bloch here set out to defend the attempts of humankind throughout history to create a humane world order, against the determinist socialism that viewed socialism as the inevitable result of history. With Marx and with the love and morality of religion, Bloch places man (that thinks of the common good) at the centre of his thinking as well as the metaphysical ideas of that which is not yet, but which can become. And thus he creates the spirit of utopia, due to which man can make the world a better place. This massive work of art begins with the powerful words: "What now? It is enough. Now we have to begin. Life has been put in our hands. In itself it has already become empty long ago. It staggers senselessly around, but we stand firm, and thus we want to be its Faustus and its ends." ("Wie nun? Es ist genug. Nun haben wir zu beginnen. In unsere Hände ist das Leben gegeben. Für sich selber ist es längst schon leer geworden. Es taumelt sinnlos hin und her, aber wir stehen fest, und so wollen wir ihm seine Faust und seine Ziele werden.") (P.9).The work was viewed as attacking the traditional Marxism of the time, and thus it was very controversial but also became hugely influential in the development of social liberation. Bloch is now considered one of the most undogmatic Marxists of the past century, and he influenced later political and philosophical thinkers enormously. Adorno himself cited this text of Bloch as having been transformative for his intellectual life, and as stated on the wrapper of the English translation, "When this work was first published, it had a profound effect on major thinkers and artists in Weimar Germany. A poetical philosophical treatise with unusual insights into culture and political commentary, Bloch' s book laid the groundwork for thinkers like Adorno and Benjamin." (Jack Zipes, University of Minnesota). This rare highly expressionist work consists of 445 pages of non-dogmatic strongly expressionistic and very influential recipes on and analyses of how man does and should behave in the humane world. "But in return, we paint like savages again, in the best sense, in the sense of the primordial, the restless, unconcerned, concerned. For this is more or less how the dancing-mask was carved. This is more or less how primitive man shaped his fetishes, if only the simple need to express oneself should again be the same" ("Aber dafür malen wir auch wieder wie die Wilden, im besten Sinn des Frühen, Unruhigen und Barbarischen genommen. So ungefähr wurde auch die Tanzmaske geschnitzt, so ungefähr baute sich der primitive Mensch seinen Fetisch zurecht, sollte auch nichts als die Not des Aussprechenmüssens wieder dieselbe geworden sein."). (P. 19).The work was much re-written, and the first editions differs from all later editions.

Traces after paper label to upper part of front board. Hindges a bit weak. Internally fine and clean. Pp. (475)-492. [Entire volumes: V,(1), 500 pp. + IV, 500 pp]. First printing of the documentation of the discovery of the dietary anti-haemorrhiagic factor, Vitamin K. The Danish biochemist and physiologist Henrik Dam (1895-1976) was awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 1943 for joint work with Edward Doisy work in discovering vitamin K and its role in human physiology. Dam's key experiment involved feeding a cholesterol-free diet to chickens. It was thus that he in 1929 investigated the role of cholesterol, by feeding the chickens a cholesterol-depleted diet. After several weeks, the animals developed hemorrhages and started bleeding uncontrollably. The bleeding could not be stopped with purified cholesterol alone - a second compound had to be added to the food. Dam isolated this dietary substance needed for blood clotting, namely that which is now known as the coagulation vitamin or vitamin K. The new vitamin received the letter K because the initial discoveries were reported (here) in the German journal Biochemische Zeitschrift, in which it was designated as Koagulationsvitamin (Vitamin of Coagulation).G&M: 1062.

He published a treatise on Solomon's Temple in Jerusalem (1694) in which he endeavoured to prove the building's Divinely inspired dimensions and proportions were the basis for Classical architecture (a notion that resurfaces every so often). He designed parts of the Lustschloss (Pleasure Palace) of Salzdahlum (1694–1702), with its celebrated picture-gallery. Later, he completed the Church of St Nikolai auf dem Schelfe, Schwerin, from 1708, after which he published Architektonisches Bedenken von der protestantischen Klein Kirchen Figur und Einrichtung (Architectural Reflections on the Form and Arrangement of Protestant Churches—1712 and 1718). His main importance lies in his theoretical writings, of which there are many.” (Oxford Reference). Poggendorff II, 1044.

Ex-libris pasted on to pasted down front end-paper. Occassional browning throughout. (6), 362 pp. + frontispiece and 11 plates. The portrait (frontispiece), present here, was only added to a few copies. Complete copies with portrait and all 11 plates are uncommon. First edition of this first textbook of descriptive systematic botany and botanical Latin. It also contains Linnaeus's first published description of his binomial nomenclature. ‘Philosophia Botanica marks a developmental stage in Linnaeus's botanical philosophy, expanding upon concepts initially presented in his ‘Fundamenta Botanica’ (1736) and ‘Critica Botanica’ (1737). The book also establishes a basic botanical terminology. “Continuing his study on the classification of plants, Linnaeus published [the present work]. In this he attempted to organize a natural system based on structure, but this work was never completed” (Sparrow 135) “Linnaeus’ main mission was to complete his reform of botany. In the work produced during his stay in Holland he had established the principles, maintained more or less unchanged for the rest of his life, but they still had to be developed and put into practice. In 1751 he published Philosophies botanica, his most influential work but actually only an expanded version of Fundamenta botanica. In it Linnaeus dealt with the theory of botany, the laws and rules that the botanist must follow in order to describe and name the plants correctly and to combine them into higher systematic categories. At the same time he struggled with the enormous undertaking of cataloging all of the world’s plant and animal species and giving each its correct place in the system.” (DSB) Sparrow 135 Soulsby 437 Hulth p. 78.
