Stockholm, Lars Salvii, 1757. 8vo. In contemporary full calf with five raised bands. Wear to extremities. Annotations and paper-label to pasted down front end-paper. Previous owners (Pehr Dubb) stamps to title-page. "Geo Ross 1757" in contemporary hand to verso of titlepage. Brownspotted throughout. (16), 209, 230-619, (1) pp. Complete. First edition of Hasselquist’s account of his travels in Palestine and the eastern part of the mediterranean being “The first systematic natural history of the Holy Land” (Blackmer). Here Hasselquist described his travels, observations on the natural world, and encounters with various cultures and peoples along the way. Hasselquist was a student of Linné, who oversaw publication of the work following Hasselquist's death in 1752. Fredrik Hasselquist (1722-1752) was a Swedish naturalist and explorer known for his contributions to botany and zoology. He was born in Törnevalla, Sweden, and studied at Uppsala University, where he developed an interest in natural history. His observations during his travels significantly contributed to the understanding of the flora and fauna of the Levant. Hasselquist died of fever in Smyrna (present-day Izmir, Turkey) in 1752, at the age of 30. Despite his short life his work laid the foundation for future botanical and zoological studies in the region. Soulsby 3577.

(Lacking volume V), but with all 3 maps and 9 tabels belonging to the full work. La Rochefoucault-Liancourt "left England in 1794, and travelled to the United States. In 1795, he and five associates began a tour which covered much of the northern United States and Upper Canada. They crossed the Niagara River to Fort Erie and also saw Fort Chippawa. From there they travelled to Newark, Canada where they were entertained by Lieutenant Governor John Graves Simcoe. Their trip was cut short when they were prohibited from entering Lower Canada. Insulted, François Alexandre Frédéric returned to the US and, in 1799, his exile ended, he returned to France. (Wikipedia). He was "Elected to the states-general of 1789 he sought in vain to support the cause of royalty while furthering the social reforms he had at heart. On the 12th of July, two days before the fall of the Bastille, he warned Louis XVI. of the state of affairs in Paris, and met his exclamation that there was a revolt with the answer, “Non, sire, c’est une révolution.” On the 18th of July he became president of the Assembly. Established in command of a military division in Normandy, he offered Louis a refuge in Rouen, and, failing in this effort, assisted him with a large sum of money. After the events of the 10th of August 1792 he fled to England, where he was the guest of Arthur Young, and thence passed to America." (Encycl. Britannica). Sabin, 39056.

lyn44324
Leipzig, Breitkopf & Härtel, 1883. Contemp. hcalf. Raised bands, gilt spine, titlelabel with gilt lettering. X,245,(1) pp. Internally fine and clean. Scarce first edition of this importent work which is a large extension of Meyer's classic paper of 1870, in which he independently of Mendeleev, discovered that the properties of the elements are a periodic function of (or vary in a periodic manner with) the atomic weight - the Periodic Table."The significance of atomic weights in the demonstration of chemical periodicity, and the suspicion that some atomic weights were not accurate, led Meyer and Seubert to examine critically and to recalculate all atomic weights then considered importent. Their study was published in 1883 (the work offered). All atomic weights were referred to the standard of unity for the atomic weight of hydrogen, a standard that Meyer championed.....In 1903 the newly created International Commission of Atomic Weeights decided to publish parallel tables based on H=1 and O=16, a practice followed for many years."(DSB IX, pp. 351-352).

Berlin, Julius Springer, 1933. Royal8vo. Bound in contemporary half calf with gilt lettering to spine. In "Die Naturwissenschaften", Vol. 21, 1933. A library stamp to title page, otherwise a very fine and clean. Pp. 787-788. First printing of the influential Meissner effect which lead to the discovery of the phenomenological theory of superconductivity by Fritz and Heinz London in 1935; The Meissner effect is an expulsion of a magnetic field from a superconductor during its transition to the superconducting state and it allowed the first theoretical predictions for superconductivity to be made"In the spring of 1933, in the course of these measurements Meissner and his colleague Robert Ochsenfeld observed a new phenomenon that contributed greatly to the understanding of superconductivity. The magnitude of the magnetic field measured between conductors was a function of the direction of the current, which could be explained by the role played by the earth's magnetic field. Therefore, Meissner and Ochsenfeld carried out the measurements of changes in the magnetic field close to the conductors when these were subject only to the earth's field, that is, without any current running through them. Before superconductivity set in, the magnetic lines of force penetrated the crystals with almost no resistance because of their low susceptibility. From what was known about superconductivity at that time, it was expected that the distribution of the lines of force would remain unchanged if the temperature were lowered below the threshold level. However, Meissner and Ochsenfeld observed an increase in the lines of force in close proximity to the superconductors. Meissner interpreted this result as follows: the magnetic field flux was displaced from the crystals when superconductivity set in the magnetic field flux that previously flowed inside the conductors was now flowing between the crystals." All in the original printed blue wrappers. Some wear and sunning to spine, otherwise fine and clean copies. Pp. 282-332; 46-156; 109-157. First printings of all three papers that together describe the Rice Distribution, or Rician distribution. The present series of papers is considered a classic within the field of statistics and probability theory. The Rice distribution is an extension of the Rayleigh distribution that adds a coherent signal to the backscattered signal that underlies the Rayleigh distribution. The model is named after Stephen O. Rice who worked at Bell Labs for nearly forty years. His most famous and influential publication is the present article; in 1983 he was awarded the IEEE Alexander Graham Bell Medal. "In 1944 and 1945, S. O. Rice published a monumental study of noise, generally regarded to be the single most useful source of information about Gaussian noise." (Millman, A History of Engineering & Science in the Bell System, 1984, p. 41).
