Textillustrations. (apparatus). First apperance of Becquerels first optical paper. Becquerel’s early research was almost exclusively optical. His first extensive investigations dealt with the rotation of plane-polarized light by magnetic fields (the paper offered). He turned next to infrared spectra (in the paper offered), making visual observations by means of the light released from certain phosphorescent crystals under infrared illumination. Becquerel is known for his discovery of radioactivity, for which he received the Nobel Prize for physics jointly with the Curies in 1903, and for other contributions to that field which he made during the halfdozen years when he was most active in it.

First appearance of this importent paper in which John Bernoulli gives his famous solution to the question of the center of oscillation. The solutions of Bernoulli and Brook Taylor were in principle identical and became an occasion of a grat dispute between these two eminent mathematicians.

Becquerel's paper:pp. 702-703. Some marginal brownspots, margins slightly soiled, light browning an creasing. First printing of an importent paper in the history of photochemistry as he here discovered some effects of coloured rays of the solar spectrum."Edmund Becquerel seems to be the first person to observe, in 1840 (in the paper offered), that the latent daguerreotype image which had been underexposed could be intensified if re-exposed to the yellow and red rays of the spectrum and then developed with mercury... Explaining this phenomenon, Becquerel called the yellow-red continuing rays ("rayon continuateurs") in contrast to the primary rays, which exicited or produced the light image and which he called exiciting rays ("rayons excitateurs").... They are dependent on the wave lenght of the light."(Eder "History of Photography", pp. 265 ff.)"Becquerel was an early experimenter in photography. In 1840 he discovered that the silver halides, natively insensitive to red and yellow light, became sensitive to that part of the spectrum in proportion to their exposure to blue, violet and ultraviolet light, allowing Daguerreotypes and other photographic materials to be developed by bathing in strong red or yellow light rather than by chemical treatment. Aelian's "History" deals with human life and history and anecdotes of moralizing character. "Aelian's philosophical ideas, notably that of universal reason as manifested in the animal creation, derive from Stoicism; he is espicially bitter against the Epicureans. His excerpts, largely derived from intermediate sources (Sostratus, Alexander of Myndos, Pamphilus, etc.), often supplement our knowledge of earlier writers...His works enjoyed great subsequent popularity, and were much drawn upon by Christian writers."(Oxford Classical Distionary).

First appearance of this importent historical paper in which Davy describes how he produced Nitrogen Chloride."In September 1812 Davy heard from Paris of a compound of 'gaz zote et de chlore....", The discoverer and method of preparation were not stated, and Davy found no notice of it in the French literature. n a paper read on 5 November ....(the paper offered) he described its preparation by the action of chlorine on cooled solutions of ammonia, nitrate of ammonia, and oxalate of ammonia, and some of its explosive properties.
