EINSTEIN, ALBERT. - THE EQUIVALENCE PRINCIPLE.
Herman H. J. Lynge & Søn A/S
lyn49779
(Leipzig, Barth),1912. 8vo. No wrappers. In: "Annalen der Physik IV, Bd. 38", No 7. Pp.249-472 a. 3 plates. (Entire issue offered). Einstein's papers: pp. 355-369 and pp. 443-458. Clean and fine. Both papers in first edition, and they are considered as the first appearance of a Nonlinear Field Equation for Gravitation. "Einstein published two remarkable memoirs in 1912 which were efforts to construct a complete theory of gravitation incorporating the equivalence principle. In these memoirs Einstein supposed that the gravitational field can be characterized completely by one function, the local speed of light, analogous to the Newtonian description, where only the gravitational potential appears. By an extraordinary argument he extended the potential equation of Newton...In his second Memoir in 1912, he used the equivalence principle to show the influence of a static gravitational field on electromagnetic and thermal processes." (DSB IV p.320 ff). - Weil No. 47 and 48.

WHEATSTONE, CHARLES. - STEREOSCOPIC VISION DISCOVERED.
Herman H. J. Lynge & Søn A/S
lyn49144
(Leipzig, Johann Ambrosius Barth, 1842). No wrappers. In: In "Annalen der Physik und Chemie. Hrsg. von J.C. Poggendorff", Ergänzungsband (Nach Bd. LI einzuschalten), Stück 1. With titlepage to the volume (Erg.-Bd.). Pp. 1-192 a. 3 plates. (Entire issue offered). Wheatstones paper: pp. 1-48. Brownspots to inner margin on the first page, otherwise clean. Stamp to titlepage and verso of plates. First appearance in German of this classic paper in physiological optics in which Wheatstone discovered the stereoscopic vison of the human eye.Stereopsis was first described by Wheatstone in 1838 (published first in the Transactions). In 1840 he was awarded the Royal Medal of the Royal Society for his explanation of binocular vision, a research which led him to make stereoscopic drawings and construct the stereoscope. He showed that our impression of solidity is gained by the combination in the mind of two separate pictures of an object taken by both of our eyes from different points of view. Thus, in the stereoscope, an arrangement of lenses or mirrors, two photographs of the same object taken from different points are so combined as to make the object stand out with a solid aspect. Sir David Brewster improved the stereoscope by dispensing with the mirrors, and bringing it into its existing form with lenses."As the inventor of the stereoscope, later developed by Brewster, Wheatstone found himself - to his own surprise - the first since Leonardo da Vinvi to discuss depth perception in terms of the different image received by the eye..."(DSB XIV, p. 290).Garrison & Morton No. 1498. Also with K.E. von baer "ueber das Klima von Sitcha und den russischen besitzungen an der Nordwestküste von Amerika", pp. 129-154.

First appearance of the paper in which Wollaston explains his invention and function of photography's first lens, the Wollaston Meniscus, invented more than 25 years before the first photography appeared."Wollaston developed the first lens specifically for camera lens called Wollaston's meniscus lens, or just meniscus lens, in 1812. The lens was designed to improve the image projected by the camera obscura. By changing the shape of the lens, Wollaston was able to project a flatter image, eliminating much of the distortion that was a problem with many of that day's biconvex lenses" (DSB).

In: "Annales de Chimie et de Physique", 3e Series - Tome 1. 512 pp. a. 3 folded engraved plates (showing experimental apparatus).Small stamp to verso of plates. (The entire volume offered). Dumas & Stas' paper: pp. 1-59. Clean and fine. First appearance in full of this paper, stating the correct weight of the carbon atom, which had profound influence on the development of organic chemistry. The first announcement (in extrait) came out in Comptes rendus, Tome Xi, 1840."From 1840 onward he carried out an important revision of the atomic weights of thirty elements. His most valuable contribution in this field was his very precise determination of the atomic weight of carbon (jointly with his pupil Stas) in 1840.2 A previously accepted weight, determined by Berzelius as C = 12.20 (O = 16), was shown to be incorrect. Dumas proved that C = 12±.002 (O = 16) or C = 75 (O = 100). The analysis was made by burning diamond and artificial and natural graphite in oxygen; the carbon dioxide formed was weighed in potash solution. The results were in close agreement. The "new" weight of carbon had a great effect on the progress of organic chemistry."(DSB).The volume contains further notable papers by Gerhardt et Cahours "Recherches chimiques sur les huiles essentitielles", pp. 60-110, by Laurent, Boussingault, Regnault, Dulong, Melloni et al.

London, George Allen & Unwin Ltd., (1963). 8vo. Orig. full red cloth w. gilt lettering to spine. Minor bumping to capitals. Orig. blue dust-jacket in excellent coondition, not price-clipped. 259, (1) pp. W. the publishing slip statin: "With the Compliments of George Allen & Unwin, Publication date 21st March." The first edition of Findlay's important collection of essays on language, mind, value, God, mathematics etc, from the library of W.O.Van Quine, with his marginal annotation.John Niemeyer Findlay (1903-1987) was an important South African philosopher, who became professor of philosophy at several universities, including Yale, Boston and King's College in London. He plays a dominant role in the Anglo-American focus on continental philosophy and invokes a shift from the analytic tradition towards the continental classics of philosophy. At philosophical institutes that were traditionally governed by the analytic tradition in the 19th century with a focus on positivism, linguistics, philosophy of language and mind etc., Findlay stands out by reviving Hegelianism, championing phenomenology and putting focus on Idealism and classical authors. Initially inspired by Wittgenstein, he turns out a n outspoken critic of this main inspiration of analytic philosophy and comes to severely criticize him and his followers. "Philosophical themes as diverse as Language, Mathematics, Value, Mind and God are among the topics discussed in this book. Some of the papers which have appeared previously in the form of articles have had a considerable influence, particularly those on Time, on Cambridge Philosophy, on Goedelian Sentences, on Morality by Convention and on the Non-existence of God. In general they represent a gradual move from a position where the influence of Wittgenstein is paramount, to a position where there is considerable criticism of linguistic philosophy and a growing interest in the approaches of Hegel and the phenomenologists. The collection includes papers on Hegel and on G.E. Moore which have not been previously published." (Inner front flap). An excellent association-copy from the library of one of the most important American and analytical philosophers of the 20th century. It is quite interesting to notice that Quine, who has contributed immensely to the fields of analytic philosophy and philosophical logic, has kapt this book, which advocates a thoroughly different approach to philosophy and claims that the importance of philosophy lies in another field than his, in his library. On page 158 Quine has written: "He should see W. ..(?)".
