Fifth edition of Leclerc’s ‘Opera’ which includes most of his most popular and influential works. “Jean Leclerc (born March 19, 1657, Geneva—died Jan. 8, 1736, Amsterdam) was an encyclopaedist and biblical scholar who espoused advanced principles of exegesis (interpretation) and theological method.Educated at Geneva and also in France at Grenoble and Saumur (all noted for a radical approach to biblical and patristic documents), Leclerc broke with scholastic Calvinism. In 1684 he was appointed to the Remonstrant Seminary faculty at Amsterdam. He made a lasting contribution to biblical studies as editor of three encyclopaedias: Bibliothèque universelle et historique (26 vol., 1686–93), Bibliothèque choisie (28 vol., 1703–13), and Bibliothèque ancienne et moderne (29 vol., 1714–30). His views on the Scriptures included the denial of Mosaic authorship of the Pentateuch as well as of the divine inspiration of Ecclesiastes, Job, Proverbs, and the Song of Solomon.” (Encyclopedia Britannica).

Goettingae, Vandenhoeck et Ruprecht, 1793. 4to. In contemporary half calf with five raised bands. Wear to extremities, soiling and stains to boards. Missing leather on upper compartment on spine, front board partly detached. Previous owner's name to title-page in contemporary hand. Light marginal browning throughout. (6), 442 pp. First edition of Michaelis’ work on Jeremiah and lamentation with commentaries on each chapter of the books with Latin, Greek, and Hebrew texts. Johann David Michaelis (1717-19) was a theologian and orientalist, whose fame today rests upon the fact that he was responsible for the first scientific expedition to Arabia Felix, namely that of Niebuhr. In 1753, he had come up with the idea for the the Royal Danish Arabia Expedition (1761-1767) and had gotten the Danish minister Bernstoff to agree to it. In 1760, when the expedition was becoming a reality, Michaelis recommended Niebuhr as a participant, and he outlined the entire purpose of the trip - namaly the list of 100 questions that he prepared and published for the members of the expedition, in order for them to answer in the course of the voyage. For all intents and purposes, Michaelis was the spiritual father of the Arabia-expedition.

.London, Printed by Taylor and Francis - Published by the Author, (1862-) 73. Folio. Papersize 52,5x36,5 cm. Lithographed and fully handcoloured. 2 adults on a rock, male and female. J. Gould & H.C. Richter, del. et lith. - Walter, Imp. Fine and clean. Ab. a half cm. of right margin with remains of textpaper, not affecting image in any way..The plate is accompanied with the original textleaf. (2) pp. This is an original plate from Goulds great work "The Birds of Great Britain", issued between 1862 and 1873. The plates in this work were executed by Gould himself, and a few by J. Wolf, H.C. Richer and Hart. Together with Audubon's plates, the Gould-plates are considered the best bird-art ever produced, AND THE PLATES IN HIS "BIRDS OF GREAT BRITAIN" ARE THE PEAK OF GOULD'S ARTISTIC LIFE. In the foreword Gould stresses the difference from his "Birds of Europe" in the treatment of the illustrations, the inclusion here of the figures of the baby birds and nests, and he comments "Many of the public are quite unaware how the colouring of these large plates is accomplished; and not a few believe that they are produced by some mechanical process or by chromo-lithography. This, however is not the case; every sky with its varied tints and every feather of each bird were coloured by hand; and when it is considered that nearly two hundred and eighty thousand illustrations in the present work have been so treated, it will most likely cause some astonishment to those who give the subject a thought.". Elsewhere he remarked upon employing "almost all colourists in London." - Wood p. 364. - Nissen No. 372. - Sitwell 102. - Zimmer pp. 261-62. - Not in Jean Anker.

Leipzig, Laurentius Sigism. Cornerus, 1665. Contemp. full vellum, but back to wide as another work has been taken out. Engraved frontisp. (30),391,(30) pp. Some light browning to leaves. On verso of frontispiece a note in contemporary hand. Scarce second edition of Wower's Polymathia presented as a fragment of a greater work he was writing "De Studia Veterum", i.e. on the intellectual pursuits of the ancients, or on the studies to which the ancients devoted themselves, by which he meant the "artes liberales" as appears from the plan of the work printed at the beginning of the "fragment". The "studia veterum" in Wower's eyes, the model and the point of departure from any studia of the moderns. The work concerns one of the great "artes liberales", namely "Grannatice". He tries to extract a theory of "grammatice" out of the staggering testimonies of ancient testimonies (from the third BC to the end of Antiquity), as though they were all campatible with each other, which they are not. (Benetto Bravo, Critice and Historical Criticism). - Not in Brunet . Not in Graesse.

CAVENDISH, HENRY. - WEIGHING THE WORLD - THE MOST IMPORTENT ADDITION TO GRAVITATION THEORY SINCE NEWTON.
Herman H. J. Lynge & Søn A/S
lyn48206
(Halle, Rengerschen Buchhandlung, 1799). Without wrappers. In "Annalen der Physik. Herausgegeben von Ludwig Wilhelm Gilbert", Bd. 2, Erstes Stück. (The entire issue offered). 1-118 a. 2 folded engraved plates. Cavendish's paper: pp. 1-62. (the torsion balance of Michell shown on the plates). First German edition of Cavendish's famous paper in which he calculated the weight of the earth and determined its mass. He also, as the first, observed gravitational motion of minute portions of matter. He estimates the earth's mass to 6,6 x 10 to the potential of 24 kg. The original paper "Experiments to determine the Density of the Earth" appeared in Philosophical Transaction, 1798."Cavendish published five papers between 1784 and 1809...With one exception they were comparatively minor productions....The exception was his determination of the density of the earth or weighing of the world in 1798, by means of John Michell's torsion balance. The apparatus consisted of two lead balls on either end of a suspended beam; these movable balls were attracted by a pair of stationary lead balls. Cavendish calculated the the force of attraction between the balls fro the observed period of oscillation of the balance and deduced the density of the earth from the force. He found it to be 5.48 times that of water. Cavendish was the first to observe gravitational motions induced by comparatively minute portions of ordinary matter...By weighing the world he rendered the law of gravitation complete. The law was no longer a proportionally statement but a quantitatively exact one; this was the most importent addition to the science of gravitation since Newton."(DSB III, p. 158.).The issue contains further papers by Ritter, Chladni et al.
