Cambridge, Cambridge University Press, 1937. 8vo. In the original green full cloth with the original dust wrapper. Dust wrapper with wear, lacking 5 mm to top and bottom of spine and the upper right part of the back. Apart from the dust-jacket, a very fine and clean copy. XIX, (1), 151 pp. Economist Simon Kuznets's copy of the first edition of Bowley's conclusive work on wages and income in United Kingdom. Bowley produced a stream of studies on British economic statistics, beginning in the 1890s with works on trade and on wages and income, and proceeding to studies of national income in the 1920s and -30s. The present, although rather short, work became highly influential, as it introduced much of Bowley's more technical work to a broader public.Simon Smith Kuznets (1901 - 1985) Russian American economist was awarded the Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences for "his empirically founded interpretation of economic growth which has led to new and deepened insight into the economic and social structure and process of development".Kuznets revolutionized econometrics with the important book "National Income and Its Composition, 1919-1938. Published in 1941 which eventually formed the famous Kuznets Curve. This work relied to a large extent on Bowley's work on national income.

London, Institution of Mechanical Engineers, 1885. 8vo. Original printed wrappers. Contained in the April issue of Proceedings of The Institution of Mechanical Engineers, pp.167-197, with 8 plates. The whole issue offered here. Custom cloth box with gilt leather title on spine. First edition. Maxim's first announcement of his invention of the automatic machine-gun; using the energy from the recoil force to eject each spent cartridge and insert the next one, Maxim came up with the single-man operated machine-gun. Earlier types of machine-guns, as the Gatling and Gardner, consisted of multiple barrels and were powered by the manual turning of a crank, which made them very heavy and caused them to require several men in order to operate them. The invention of the Maxim-mechanism allowed for a single-barrel construction, and the new machine-gun could potentially be operated by just one man, which thus led to the modern automatic machine-gun. Scarce.

With titlepage to Tome 75 and orig. printed wrappers to the issue (Septembre issue). Pp. 1-112 a. 1 engraved plate (entire issue offered). With titlepage to Tome 4. Pp. 129-256 (entire Fevrier issue) and pp. 257-384 (entire Mars issue). Hess' papers: pp. 80-103 (tome 75), pp. 211-229 (tome 4), pp. 290-316 (tome 4). First appearance in France of Hess' two fundamental laws in thermodynamic 1: "the law of heat formation" (1840), anticipating a specific example of the "LAW OF THE CONSERVATION OF ENERGY", 2 years before Julius Robert Mayer elucidated the more general principle in 1842 - claiming that "the heat developed in chemical change is constant, whether the change occurs directly or indirectly in several stages"and 2: "the law of thermoneutrality" (1842), stating, that when neutral salts exchange acids and bases in solution, the heat of the reaction is zero. - These papers were published at the same time in France and in Russia. Germain Henri Hess is noted today for two fundamental principles of thermochemistry: the law of constant summation of heat (known simply as Hess's law) and the law of thermoneutrality. These discoveries were remarkable in that they were postulated without any supporting theoretical framework and took place in a field of study almost totally neglected by his contemporaries. Hess's law is of immense practical importance and is used to this day to determine heats of reaction when their direct measurements are difficult or impossible. (Chemistry Encyclopedia)."Numerous men, notably Lavoisier and Laplace had measured the heats evolved in various reactions, but thermochemistry received its first importent advance at the hands ofgermain Henri Hess, who showed that the heat evolved in a reaction is the same regardless of whether the reaction is carried out directly or in a number of steps. This generalization, known now as "Hess's Law", makes possible the calculation of heats for many reactions where direct measurement are impracticable."(Leicester & Klickstein, A Source Book..., p329."The thermochemical work of Hess was continued extensively in the second half of the nineteenth century through the studies of Thomsen and Berthelot. Both Berthelot’s principle of maximum work and the thermodynamic theories of affinity which came to prevail were clearly foreshadowed in the work of Hess. In addition to his internationally known research in thermochemistry, Hess was very influential in the development of chemistry in Russia. His text Osnovania chistoy khimii (Fundamentals of Pure Chemistry) went through seven editions and did much to establish the chemical nomenclature of the Russian language. He was always interested in technological questions, and many of his students later contributed to Russia’s industrial development." Paris, Vrin, 1949. 8vo. Original printed wrappers. A few pencil-underlinings in the text. With discreete stamp to title-page: "Michel Adam". A very fine and clean copy. 107, (5) pp. The uncommon first edition of this collection of early essays, constituting the first appearance in book form of two highly important articles by one of the most significant philosophers of the 20th century. The two articles were originally published in Revue Philosophique in 1932 and 1940, but only really with their appearance in book form did they exercise their great influence in France. The essays by Levinas on the phenomenology of Husserl and Heidegger served to introduce this strain of philosophy in France where it would go on to dominate academic philosophy until the middle of the 1970s. As such, these essays are crucial documents to anybody with an interest in the development of 20th century continental philosophy. However, this volume has the added attraction of providing us with an insight into the genesis of Levinas' own thought. The experience of the Second World War, which Levinas spent as a prisoner of war in Germany, led him to question the ethical foundations of phenomenology and to reconsider his earlier uncritical attachment to Heidegger. It is thus by engaging critically with the conception of philosophy that is manifested in his own pre-war works that Levinas shall elaborate such masterpieces of philosophy as Totalité and Infini and Autrement qu'être.

SERTÜRNER, FRIEDRICH. - THE ISOLATION OF MORPHINE AND COINING THE WORD 'MORPHINE'.
Herman H. J. Lynge & Søn A/S
lyn49073
Paris, Crochard, 1817. No wrappers. Extract from "Annales de Chimie et de Physique, Par MM. Gay-Lussac et Arago.", tome 5, Cahier 1. With titlepage and htitle to vol. 5. Pp. 21-42. First French edition (the German paper issued simutaneously in Gilbert's Annalen) of this groundbreaking paper claiming to be the first to announce the isolation of pure morphine from opium. This process marks an importent step in the beginnings of alkaloid chemistry, and the isolation of morphine is the first isolation of an alkali of vegetable origin. In his paper Sertuerner coined the word "morphine" after Morpheus (the Greek God of sleep). The isolation of morphine from opium, the first isolation of a natural product, was a seminal event in the development of pharmacology as an independent discipline. The purification kick-started natural product chemistry and quickly led to the isolation of a host of other alkaloids. Within a few years, in 1827, Heinrich Emanuel Merck of Darmstadt began selling morphine, resulting in the development of the eponymous company. Sertürner reported his first observations on Opium in 1805, which was mainly concerned with the constituent of meconic acid, but "it was only in 1817...(in the paper offered) that he unequivocally reported the isolation of pure morphine. He prepared it by extracting opium with hot water and precipitating morphine with ammonia. he obtained colorless crystals, poorly soluble in water, but soluble in acids and alcohol. In order to establish that his crystals carried the pharmacological activity of raw opium, Sertuerner tested them on himself and three boys, "none older than seventeen.". It was a near-catastrophe." (Ryan J. Huxtable a. K.W. Schwarz).DEROSNE (1803) made claim of priority in the discovery of opium, but he only "prepared a crude extract of opium with alcohol and water, and obtained by potassium carbonate preciipitation, what he called "sel de Derosne". Derosne's alkaloidal fraction lacked narcotic properties, and was probably largely narcotine (also known as noscapine), perhaps with meconic acid, both abundant in opium." (Huxtable & Schwarz).Parkinson "Breakthroughs", 1817 C,The offered issue contains another importent paper by Alexander v. Humboldt: "Sur les Lignes isothermes. (Extrait)", pp. 102-111 and a large folded engraved plate. Here Humboldt introduced "Isothermes" in meteorology. This extract issued at the same time as the larger memoir which appeared in "Mémoires de physique et de chimie de la Société d’Arcueil" (1817).
