Arnhemiae, Hagium, 1665. 4to. In contemporary full with title in contemporary hand to spine. Wear and soiling to extremities. First leaves slightly soiling and vague damp to upper margin throughout. Small piece of paper cut out of the title-page, not touching the text. (22), 771, (2), 73, (2) pp. The rare first edition of Diest’s theological work on the art of sermonizing. It organizes various biblical texts—such as doctrinal, consolatory, admonitory, promissory, historical, allegorical, parabolic and typological—into exemplary formats. “Diest, Heinrich a German theologian, was born at Altena, in Westphalia, in 1595. He studied at Dortmund, Siegen, and Basle, and continued his studies at; Heidelberg; but was obliged to leave that city at the time of the religious disputes, and returned to Basle, to pass his examinations for the doctor's degree, in 1621. Until 1624 he lived at Leyden as a private teacher. He was appointed minister of the Gospel at Emmerich, and in 1629 professor of theology and Hebrew in the University of Harderwick. In 1641 he went to Deventer in the same capacity, and died there in 1673, leaving, among many other works, De Ratione Studii Theologici (Harderwick, 1634)” (McClintock & James Strong, The Cyclopedia of Biblical, Theological, and Ecclesiastical Literature).

Halle, Niemeyer, 1922 (Vol.1 and vol. 2, I) - 1921 (Vol 2, II). Royal 8vo. Bound in three original uniform black half cloth bindings w. gilt titles to spines. Capitals a bit worn and inner front hinges a bit weak. Internally nice and clean. XXII, 257, (1); XI, (1), 508; XIII, (1), 244 pp. A mixed set made up of the third and second edition (Dritte + Zweite Auflage) of Husserl's main work, one of the most important philosophical works of the 20th century. The "Logical Investigations" fundamentally changed philosophy and invoked the new philosophical era of the 20th century, -with this work Husserl founds phenomenology. Together with Heidegger's "Sein und Zeit" this must be considered the most important work of modern philosophy. The work was originally published 1900-1901, and the first edition is very difficult to come by. The second edition, is enlarged and revised, and the third collates exactly as the second. None of those two are common either.Husserl opens this fundamental work by attacking psychologism, and he then introduces his brand new philosophical method, which he had still by then not fully developed, but which came to influence all philosophy ever since -Phenomenology! Husserl himself calls this a "Work of Breakthrough" (see his preface to the second edition). In short, psychologism taught that logic itself was not an independent discipline, but a part of psychology, and it is this notion that Husserl gives its final blow in his logical investigations, -far more definitely than Frege had tried to some years earlier. Husserl now establishes a philosophy that asks the question of the essence of the matter of perception as opposed to the form of perception, as well as the meaning of the difference between formal or pure and material laws, truths and determinations, -all based on his strong interest in the relationship between the formalities of arithmetic and of logic. The work is the starting point for mereology, the formal first order theory of wholes and their parts. Mereology is both an application of predicate logic and a branch of formal ontology.Husserl is now famous as the father of phenomenology, and he decisively influenced the likes of Heidegger, Sartre, Carnap, Merleau-Ponty, Levinas, Ricoeur, Derrida etc. etc.

Kiel, bey dem Verfasser, 1785. 8vo. In contemporary paper-covered boards (original?) with paper-title label to spine. Wear and scratches to extremities, internally very nice and clean. Printed on good paper. (2), 181, (1) pp. + 7 engraved plates numbered I-VII. First edition of Hirschfeld’s work, printed on good paper, on his travels in Swizerland beautifully illustrated with plates depicting costumes and houses of Switzerland. Christian Cay Lorenz Hirschfeld (1742-1792), a key figure in the Romantic garden movement, was deeply influenced by his time in Switzerland. His stay in Bern (1765-1767) exposed him to the region’s natural beauty and landscapes. Hirschfeld's ideas, shaped by the picturesque Swiss scenery, contributed to the spread of the English landscape garden style across Europe.

Helmholtz paper: pp. 241-260 (vol. 91, "Heft" 4). With titlepages to both volumes 89 a. 91. All three issues clean and fine. First printing of the 3 main papers in the famous Helmholtz-Clausius controversy about the principle of the "Conservation of Energy". His reply to Clausius contains very importent additons to his conservation law, as it clarifies his use of the concepts of "energy", "vis viva", "electrical tension" , "potentials" etc.Helmholtz famous work Über die Erhaltung der Kraft" from 1847 gave the first comprehensive statement of the first law of thermodynamics: All modes of energy, heat, light, electricity, and all chemical phenomena, are capable of transformation from one to the other but are indestructible and cannot be created. Clausius (in the papers offere) critized helmholtz on his theory of heat over the consistency of the physical interpretation and of the use mathematics. He argued that Helmholtz's demonstration of his conservation law was valid only for Helmholtz's particulat model of matter, and that he had not understood the notion of the potential. This criticism lead Helmholtz expand and clarify the central concepts of physics, importent steps in the history of theoretical physics.

HERSCHEL, WILLIAM. - INDICATION OF THE UNIVERSALITY OF NEWTON'S LAWS OF MOTION.
Herman H. J. Lynge & Søn A/S
lyn42303
(London, Bulwer and Co., 1803). 4to. Without wrappers as extracted from "Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society of London." Year 1803-Part II. Pp. 339-382 and 2 engraved plates. First appearance of a fundamental paper in cosmology and physics as it contains the first observational data to support that Newton's dynamical laws holds outside the solar system. Herschel shows here that the circulating motions of double-stars were under gravitational forces. Until then the validity of the law of gravity was only established within the solar system. Now, a century after the establishment of the law, it was traced out in the motion of incredibly distant stars and the theory first truly earned its title of Universal. The exact proof of the mutual gravitation of the double-stars was only obtained five years after Herschel's death, when the motions of the stars were more precisely dtermined. One of the most notable of Herschel's discoveries of double-stars, binary stars. A first cataloque of such pairs was published early in 1782 and contained 269, of which 227 were new discoveries. "Twenty years after the publication of his first cataloque Herschel was of Michell's opinion - Michell had expressed the opinion that the odds in favour of a physical relation between the members of herschel's newly discovered double stars were "beyond arithmetic" - but was able to support it by evidence of an entirely novel and much more direct character. A series of observations of Castor, presented in two papers in the "Philosophical Transaction" in 1803 (the paper offered here) and 1804, which were fortunately supplemented by an observation of Bradley's in 1759, had shewn a progressive alteration in the direction of the line joining its two components, of such a character as to leave no doubt that the two stars were revolving round one another; and there were five oher cases in which a similar motion was observed...it was shown that the double-star was really formed by a connected pair of stars near enough to influence one another's mortion."(Berry in "A Short History of Astronomy" pp. 342-43).

The issue no 25: pp. 2181-2248 lacks the first leaf, no affecting the paper. Titlepages with a faint stamp. First printing of these papers of seminal importance to the evolution of particle physics - the results of these investigations immediately lead the way to the discovery of the neutron. They found that the 'Beryllium radiation', discovered by Bothe and Becker, ejected protons from a paraffin target. This discovery was amazing because photons have no mass. However, the Joliot-Curies interpreted the results as the action of photons on the hydrogen atoms in paraffin. They used the analogy of the Compton Effect, in which photons impinging on a metal surface eject electrons. The trouble was that the electron was 1,836 times lighter than the proton and, therefore, recoiled much more easily than the heavier proton after a collision with a gamma photon. When James Chadwick reported to Lord Rutherford on the Joliot-Curies’ results, Lord Rutherford exclaimed, "I do not believe it!" Chadwick immediately repeated the experiments at the Cavendish Laboratory in Cambridge, England. He not only bombarded the hydrogen atoms in paraffin with the beryllium emissions, but also used helium, nitrogen, and other elements as targets. By comparing the energies of recoiling charged particles from different targets, he proved that the beryllium emissions contained a neutral component with a mass approximately equal to that of the proton. He called it the neutron.

The idea proposed is regarded as being a cornerstone of contemporary quantum field theory. Higgs later applied some of Ambarzumian and Iwanenko's discoveries which eventually resulted in the discovery of the Higgs Boson, often referred to as the 'God Particle'. The idea of the creation of particles with nonzero rest masses was absolutely new and did not follow from classical notions and is now a part of the Standard Model.

A faint dampstain to right margin of the first leaves, otherwise fine and clean. First printing of this importent memoir as it represents THE EARLIEST INTRODUCTION OF THE IDEA OF THE POTENTIAL, the "Gravitational Potential". The potential of a body at any point is the sum of the mass of every element of the body when divided by its distance from the point. Lagrange showed that if the potential of a body at an external point were known, the attraction in any direction could be at once found."For the prize of 1774, the Academy asked whether it were possible to explain the secular equation of the moon by the attraction of all the celestial bodies, or by the effect of the nonsphericity of the earth and of the moon. Lagrange, who was equal to the scope of the subject, felt very stale and at the end of August 1773 withdrew from the contest. At d’Alembert’s request Condorcet persuaded him to persevere. He was granted an extension and thanked the jury for this favor in February 1774. He took the prize with "Sur l’équation séculaire de la lune." (DSB).Parkinson "Breakthroughs", 1773 P.
