The Distance of a Day explores the delimitations of a day. “If the day is ending in California,” Horvitz asks, “where exactly in the world is it simultaneously beginning?”

Nevertheless, this semi-fictional work, as with all his further works, is really an impressionistic, romanticized memoir with thinly disguised characters who represent Kerouac ("Peter Martin"), his family & the real-life cohorts who would co-found the Beat Generation, including William S. Burroughs ("Will Dennison"), Allen Ginsberg ("Leon Levinsky") & Herbert Huncke ("Junky"). The experiences depicted are the legends of early Beat history".

Haruki Murakami har aldrig lagt skjul på, hvor meget han beundrer en forfatter som Raymond Carver for at fortælle en tilsyneladende enkel historie, der pludselig får en fuldstændig overraskende drejning.
