DUBOIS, ABBE J.A.
Bogantikken - Roskilde Antikvariat

Oxford, at the Clarendon Press. 1906 741 pp.Sider. Full shirting. Nice copy. Abbe J.A. Dubois or Jean-Antoine Dubois (1765 - 1848) was a French Catholic missionary in India.[1] He was affectionately known as Fraadh Saaibh to the parishioners of the Holy Cross Church, Cordel in Mangalore, among whom he ministered. Dubois had been baptized on January 10, 1766 in St.Remèze/Ardèche. He was ordained in the diocese of Viviers in 1792, and sailed for India in the same year under the direction of the Missions étrangères. He was at first attached to the Pondicherry mission, and worked in the southern districts of the present Madras Presidency. On the fall of Seringapatam in 1799, he went to Mysore to reorganize the Christian community that had been shattered by Tipu Sultan. Among the benefits which he conferred upon his impoverished flock were the founding of agricultural colonies and the introduction of vaccination as a preventive of smallpox. But his great work was his record of Hindu manners, customs and ceremonies. Immediately on his arrival in India, he saw that the work of a Christian missionary should be based on a thorough acquaintance with the innermost life and character of the native population.

KISLING, MOÏSE - CHARENSOL, GEORGES
Bogantikken - Roskilde Antikvariat
ros79599
Paris, Editions de Clermont, le 6 octobre 1948 1948 97 pp.Sider. Softback Some used Text in France. Moise Kisling (January 22, 1891 – April 29, 1953) was a Polish painter. Born in Kraków, Austria-Hungary, he studied at the School of Fine Arts in Kraków, where he was encouraged to travel to the center for artistic creativity in the early 20th century, Paris, France. In 1910, Kisling moved to Montmartre and a few years later to Montparnasse. At the outbreak of World War I he volunteered for service in the French Foreign Legion, and in 1915 he was seriously wounded in the Battle of the Somme, for which he was awarded French citizenship. Kisling lived and worked in Montparnasse where he was part of the renowned artistic community gathered there at the time. For a short time he lived in the Bateau-Lavoir in Montmartre and in 1911-12 spent nearly a year at Céret. In 1913 he took a studio in Montparnasse, where he lived for the next 27 years; Jules Pascin and later Modigliani lived in the same building. He became close friends with many of his contemporaries, including Amedeo Modigliani, who painted him in 1916 (today at the Musee d'Art Moderneas). His style used in painting landscapes is similar to that of Marc Chagall, but, a master at depicting the female body, his surreal nudes and portraits earned him the widest acclaim.Kisling volunteered for army service again in 1940. When the French Army was discharged at the time of the surrender to the Germans, Kisling who was of Jewish origin went to the United States and, after exhibitions in New York and Washington, lived in California until 1946. Moise Kisling died in Sanary-sur-Mer, Var, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, France on April 29, 1953. A residential street in the town is named after him. Ill. in b/w.

OLOFSSON, JAN
Bogantikken - Roskilde Antikvariat
ros126291
Taschen. 1994. 160p.Sider. Softback. Nice copy. English, German and French Edition/Text. The Swede, Jan Olofsson, born in 1944 is no typical Photographer. His eventful life led him via Germany to great Britain, where he was able to experience the swinging London of the sixities at close hand. To describe JanOlofsson's life in the London of the Swinging Sixties is almost to invite cliches - drinks in the Revolution Club and Bag O'Nails, beers backstage at the Hammersmith Odeon with Johnny Cash and all night sessions with the Stones. It was from this base that he photographed the many stars to be featured in this book - including The Who, The Beatles, Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Ike and Tina Turner, James Brown, Jimi Hendrix, Sammy Davis Jnr and Tom Jones. A self-taught photographer, Jan took all his pictures on location, in television studios, in dressing rooms and at live shows - never in a studio. Many of these pictures have been recently rediscovered and are published here for the first time - making this book of appeal to photographers, music buffs and anyone interested in the 1960s.
