The account of the United States expedition during the first International Polar Year based at Fort Conger, Lady Franklin Bay, explored the north of Greenland from Cape Bryant to Cape Washington, and the west coast of Grinnell Land (northern Ellesmere Islands). The expedition met with disaster. The Proteus, the relief ships failed to arrive in August 1883, and it was decided to attempt to reach Cape Dobbin in small boats. When the relief finally arrived, only Greely and 5 other of the party were still alive. Arctic bibliography 6118.
