First, rare volume in the "Problems of contemporary art" series, at this initial stage planned to be a "magazine of artists and writers" edited by Robert Motherwell, Harold Rosenberg, Pierre Chareau, and John Cage. Saarinen's plan for the extension of Helsinki by the foundation of the satellite community Munkkiniemi-Haaga. Saarinen's most extensive town planning scheme, it is extremely thorough and comprises - in addition to the carefully drawn plan - a detailed study of the townscape with models and designs for a variety of building types. The scheme got a wide publicity but before realisation had begun, the state of economy changed radically and only fragments of the plan were realised.
