ansA1957
Tokyo 1899. 26x37. 3 leaves with title, introduction and colophon + 16 collotype plates with reproductions of photographs by Ogawa, tinted probably by hand. Publisher's decorated, printed boards. A nice copy despite minor unobtrusive damp-ripples and a small hole in one plate. Tinted photographs of the Count Okuma house built at the turn of the century in traditional Japanese style. The album provides an uncommon look at a Japanese mansion of the time, including interior views and the rock gardens with miniature lake and rivers, as well as Okumas elaborately displayed collection of chrysanthemums. Kazumaza Ogawa (1860-1929) was a pioneering Japanese photographer and a founding member of the Japan Photographic Association (Nihon Shashin Kai)

München 1928. 23x18. 104 s. 47 full-page reproductions. Printed wrappers, a very good copy with some light external traces of handling and age toning, and lacking three nethermost cms of backstrip. (Bauhausbücher, 13). First edition of the Bauhaus book providing a German translation of Gleize's important essay on Cubism. The illustrations show works by all the major Cubist painters, with commentary arguing that they have passed through two phases and are now in a third, characterised by the rejection of the perspective mechanism altogether. This trait also defines a younger group of painters whose work is shown in the book - essentially pupils of Gleizes and Léger.

Paris, Claude-Antoine Jombert, 1771. 17x10. IV+IV+LXXXII+420; + IV+548 pp. A very nice set in contemporary full calf, spines gilt, red edges; spine ends and raised bands lightly worn. First French edition of 'Le Vite de' Piu` Celebri Architetti d'ogni nazione et d'ogni tempo' which was published anonymously in 1768. This dictionary of famous architects was the first of a number of influential books by Milizia on the history and theory of architecture, articulating the 18th-century sentiment against the Baroque - a term employed in a strictly derogatory sense by Milizia who likens the raving mad Borromini to the contagious architectural madness of his buildings. Includes an extensive preface by the French translator.

Paris 1930. 24x18. IV+96 pp. + 2 leaves with eight reproductions and photos (paintings by Artür Harfaux and a sculpture). Six reproductions of drawings in text (three full-page) by Josef Šíma and Maurice Henry. Uncut in the original printed wrappers with spiral drawing by Jean Arp. A well-preserved copy with the expected (evenly) browning of the poor paper. The last issue of this rare parasurrealist magazine which appeared in three issues only, 1928-1930. The Grand Jeu group was inspired by the pataphysics and aimed to explore intuitive and spontaneous knowledge through recourse to mystical texts and the use of drugs. In 1925 they discovered the Surrealists, and André Breton encouraged cooperation between the two groups although the Grand Jeu group regarded surrealist ideology as limited in their focus on the subconscious. In 1929, Monny de Boully criticised Breton for sacrificing the experimental character of Surrealism, and he left the Breton group to joint Le Grand Jeu, a defection that led Breton to instruct the trial of Le Grand Jeu on March 11, 1929. Contributions by René Daumal (open letter to Breton), Roger Gilbert-Lecomte, Georges Ribemont-Dessaignes, Monny de Boully, André Delons, René Crevel, and others.
