Damien Hirst is one of the artists who holds a special position within the Astrup Fearnley Collection. Beyond formalistic concerns, Hirst's art deals with deeply symbolic and metaphysical questions. Long fascinated by death, he seduces spectators with his often-grotesque reflections on mortality: the cadaver of a cow; butterflies objectified onto canvases; medicine in sterile cabinets; flies amassed on pictorial surfaces. In all of these works, the spectator is confronted with the "decisive moment" of no return. But this preoccupation is typically counter-balanced by a rigorous yearning for total equilibrium. In Hirst's work, therefore, one identifies fatal situations eerily fixed and suspended in time, as if the artist were trying to reverse nature's inexorable cycle. If Hirst's art does not achieve such a redemption of death, it has certainly been significant in redeeming aesthetics. Indeed, as his spectacle of shock has run its course, what was once deemed grotesque or in "bad taste" has since been rearticulated into a new kind of beauty and even the sublime. Cumulatively, his installations, sculptures, and paintings presented in this exhibition offer an important, if fragmented, overview of his formalistic and thematic thinking throughout the past two decades.

"Pilgrim badges and pilgrimage. Medieval pilgrim culture in Scandinavia", illustrated dissertation in Swedish with a 9-page Summary in English. - - - (Lund studies in medieval archaeology, 7.) - - - (Abstract:) "The dissertation offers an account of the pilgrim badges that have been found in Scandinavia. The catalogue part covers not only the badges themselves but also ampullae, moulds and reliefs on church bells and baptismal fonts. There are 492 items in all. Furthermore there is an account of the pilgrim graves that have been investigated and documented in the area. The starting point of the discussion is that the haphazard accretion of the archaeological material does provide a statistical basis for the drawing of conclusions about fundamental structures of, and changes in, pilgrimage. The questions that are taken up concern the changes that can be noted with regard to the choice of goal, with regard to the incidence of pilgrimage in Scandinavia and with regard to the social function of the badges. For the purpose of analysis the material has been divided into three chronological categories: before 1300, 14th century and from 1400. To judge by the places of origin of the badges, it was the long pilgrimages - for instance to Santiago de Compostela - that were commonest during the early medieval period, whereas during the late period the journeys were predominantly within Scandinavia - for instance the ones to Trondheim. A mapping of the places where the badges have been found indicates that pilgrimage first secures a foothold on Danish territory and then gradually spreads north. Not until the 15th century are the eastern part of Central Sweden and the interior of Norway included. There is also a change in the social function of the badges during the Middle Ages. In the beginning pilgrim burials are common, which indicates that the person felt a strong bond with the badge. The badge's worth derives first and foremost from the fact that a religious act has been performed. During the late medieval period, however, the badge loses this attachment to the person and acquires instead an independent function as amulet, as votive offering, as model for bell relief or perhaps as icon".

Colour photobook, with Gill picking up where his 'Hackney Wick' left off. Publisher's decorated cloth, as new. Signed by Gill on title. Stephen Gill is a British experimental, conceptual and documentary photographer. Books are a key aspect to Gill's practice. Gill mainly draws inspiration from his immediate surroundings of inner city life in East London and more recently Sweden with an attempt to make work that reflects, responds and describes the times we live in. His work is often made up of long-term photo studies exploring and responding to the subjects in great depth. After working mainly in black and white from 1984, his practice since the mid 1990s was mostly in colour. Until 2003 his work mostly had a descriptive and typographical approach towards the subjects. Eight of his photo studies made between 1997 and 2003 were assembled and published as chapters in a book called Field Studies in 2004, which also toured as an exhibition. In January 2003 Gill bought a Bakelite 1960s box camera made by Coronet for 50 pence at Hackney Wick Sunday market, near where he lived. The camera had a plastic lens, and it lacked focus and exposure controls. Over the next four years he had used the camera to photograph within the extremely varied environment of Hackney Wick, including waterways and allotments, and to make portraits of people at the Sunday market and who lived and worked in the area. The subject parameters to this long-term obsession were geographical rather than conceptual. The lack of image clarity that the plastic camera offered aligned very much with Gill's frame of mind at the time.
