Ehrström och heraldiken / Eric O. W. Ehrström ja heraldiikka", and Curriculum vitae. - - - Finnish artist Eric O. W. Ehrström was exceptionally multifaceted. He designed jewellery, tableware, textiles, furniture, and buildings. Erhström was an artisan and industrial designer, who knew the art of metal embossing as well as the work of an enamel- and goldsmith. He made glass and fresco paintings, sculptures, graphics; illustrated and wrote books, drew and painted. He worked as a conservator, teacher, intendant and artistic leader. Ehrström's heraldic production is vast. It contains coats of arms, medals, postal stamps, and also product marks. He was a member of Finland's Sigil Committee and Flag Committee, where the official symbols of the independent republic were planned. The Finnish Royal Crown is also his work. Eric O. W. Ehrström studied only one year at the Finnish Art Society's Drawing School, and after that he was an apprentice to Akseli Gallén at Kalela 1899-1900, when Gallén was planning the pavilion for the Paris World Exposition. Gallén's influence is seen in Ehrström's production, and directed him towards the area of art crafts.

Stockholm, Vasamuseet och Föreningen Vasamuseet, 1997. Stor 8:o. 80 sid. Illustrerad, delvis i färg. / Text bilingual in Swedish and English. Häftad, dek. omslag, fint skick. Catalogue for an exhibition of ship models recreating the Swedish warship Vasa, built between 1626 and 1628, which sank after sailing only about 1,300 meters into her maiden voyage on August 10, 1628. She fell into obscurity after most of her valuable bronze cannons were salvaged in the 17th century, and was only located in the late 1950s in a busy shipping area in Stockholm harbor. The ship was salvaged with a largely intact hull in 1961. She was housed in a temporary museum called Wasavarvet ("The Vasa Shipyard") until 1988 and then moved permanently to the Vasa Museum. The ship is one of Sweden's most popular tourist attractions and has been seen by over 35 million visitors since 1961.

Edinburgh, RCAHMS, 2004. 4to. 29,7 x 21 cms. 136 pp. Illustrated with photographs, maps and plans, largely in colour. Pictorial wrappers, fine. (Publisher:) "From 1999-2004 the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland, in partnership with the Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland, received £1,023,200 from the Heritage Lottery Fund for the Scottish Architects' Papers Preservation Project. This generous support followed a decade of initiatives designed to identify architects practice records held in private hands throughout Scotland and secure them for long term preservation and public use. A total of 195,800 drawings, photographs and manuscripts were catalogued and re-housed to archival standards. 3,000 items received conservation treatment, whilst a further 2,000 were digitally copied, making them readily available for the public to study and enjoy. The papers, dating from the mid 19th to the late 20th century, contain valuable information about Scotland's built heritage. All types of buildings are featured: from country houses to housing schemes, from farms to factories, and from schools to shops. This report documents the project from its inception to its conclusion, and includes full colour illustrations from all 25 collections that form the Scottish Architects' Papers Preservation Project, as well as chapters on cataloguing and conservation methodology."

Publisher's crimson boards, printed dustjacket. As new. "Professor Erkki Helamaa's giant project presents 3,200 words used in the construction industry with explanations and examples. Helamaa has familiarized himself with the origins and backgrounds of the words he has collected over the course of 35 years. In addition to the etymological examination of many sayings, there are examples from e.g. Samuli Paulaharju's, Kalle Päätalo's, Väinö Linna's and Kustaa Vilkuna's productions, a slang dictionary or from the collections of the folk poetry archive. The special terms of the construction industry and the delightfully inventive vocabulary of construction sites offer even non-experts in the field a fun and interesting reading experience that you will want to return to again and again. The work has illustrative drawings." - - - (Suomalaisen kirjallisuuden seuran toimituksia, 988.)

Uppsala, Uppsala universitet, 2003. Diss. 8vo. xvi + 302 pp. + Abstract leaf. Illustrated. With bibliography. Pictorial wrappers. Very fine. As new. (Abstract:) "This study examines two groups of European nobility, the Roman aristocracy and the British Grand Tour travellers, specifically, their attitudes towards Antiquity as expressed in portraits produced in eighteenth-century Rome. Antiquity in this study connotes Ancient Rome, particularly its political system, religious system and architecture, and assumes it to be the quintessence of a Western mythology that had supported the legitimation of the ruling classes since the Middle Ages. In the eighteenth century the realisations of this mythology became more diverse, as demonstrated by the two nobilities examined here. The papal nobility resided in Rome and owned not only collections of ancient sculpture but also many of the actual archaeological sites. The British nobility visited Rome during the second part of the eighteenth century through an institutionalised form of educational travel termed the Grand Tour, of which both viewing and posing for portraits were expected components. Using readings of different portrait settings, formaulae, the study traces how apparently similar assimilations of the myth of Antiquity supported different social aims in different parts of Europe. Through interpretations of display criteria, as seen in analyses of inventories, documents and first-hand commentaries, this study emphasises the varied social functions of portraiture within the European élite cultures. The ultimate result of such a reading allows for a clearer picture of the multiple functions of the myth of Antiquity within the legitimation strategies of the eighteenth-century European nobility and gives a clearer view of the importance given to visualising social identity and status".

Provenance: Gunilla Palmstierna-Weiss (1928-2022), neatly stamped in 2023. (Publisher:) "Apart from being a writer of plays and screenplays, Ingmar Bergman has over the past fifty years devoted himself to several muses. He has directed about a hundred stage performances, fifty films, and many works for radio and television. With the varied media at his disposal, Bergman is internationally the most versatile author-cum-director presently at work, well aware of what each medium can and cannot do. This book focuses on Bergman's way of tackling the problems inherent in each art form he has dealt with, giving a penetrating picture of his craftsmanship and the intimate relationship between his work on stage and in film, as well as the possibilities and limitations of the various forms. The book addresses itself not only to Bergman fans but also to all those interested in the aesthetic problems related to different presentational forms".

Göteborg 2002. 8vo. xii + 244 pp. Richly illustrated in colour. Publisher's boards. As new. Revised edition of the author's dissertation, "Roman painting. Wall paintings, Fayum portraits and polychrome statuary". - - - (Abstract:) "Choices of materials in conservation, whether traditional or modern products are, or should be, preferred and issues regarding the basis on which such choices are, or should be, made are problems relating to the level of applicability of theoretical programmes in real life. The ancient techniques, encaustic painting and ganosis, are at focus in this dissertation, and the materials used for such painting and coating have been studied. The principal material connecting these techniques is beeswax, used in its natural, or raw state as paint, or transformed into saponified wax, i.e. Punic wax, either as paint or as a surface coating. These techniques are related to Fayum portraits, i.e. painting on wooden panels, with Roman wall painting, and with Hellenistic and Roman polychrome statuary as a coating. The materials, beeswax and natron, ingredients in such paints and coatings, are studied and described, as well as the relation between these paints and preparations. Some pigments used during Antiquity, relevant in this study, are briefly described, being part of ancient paints. Ancient and modern interpretations of the terms encausto and ganosis have been studied. Issues concerning whether or not these materials and techniques might be accepted in professional conservation and modern building construction are discussed. Experiments have been made with the intention of reconstructing these ancient materials and techniques and testing their applicability in modern environments, aiming at reducing negative factors for the environment and health. Finally, theories have been exposed to situations in real life, and the results are presented in six case studies". - - - (Göteborg studies in conservation, 9.)
