Many of these, indeed, are inseparable from his verbal games, living only as ideas, as in the case of the 'readymades' which have delighted or puzzled so many. The ultimate Surrealist when he chose - as in the sayings of his female alter ego, Rrose Sélavy (Eros c'est la vie) - he strove passionately to avoid being trapped by aesthetics, and eventually became guru to three generations of artists; his statement that 'what the artist chooses to be art is art' helped to foster Neo-Dada, Pop and Conceptual art. Duchamp's major work, The Bride Stripped Bare by her Bachelors, Even (also known as The Large Glass), was left in a state of 'definitive incompletion' in 1923. The notes for this extraordinary work form the largest part of this book. They will help the mystified student of The Large Glass, but in no simple or straight- forward way. Duchamp's salty ambiguities are the product of perhaps the keenest mind to concern itself with the problem of art in the twentieth century. Even his celebrated decision to give up art for chess, in 1923, was by no means a straightforward one, as is demonstrated by his subsequent output of 'texticles', dicta, verbal constructions and jokes (not to speak of more concrete works). Taken together, the writings of Marcel Duchamp constitute a major document of modern art. The masters of intarsia adopted the newly developed technique of linear perspective to depict their most characteristic themes, namely, cityscapes viewed through an archway and illusionistic renderings of half-open cabinets filled with liturgical or scholarly equipment. At first these enchanting scenes in wood were found mainly in ecclesiastical settings - on choir stalls and in sacristies - but by the later Quattrocento they were also used to decorate the Studioli, or private studies, of powerful secular patrons. Eventually, in the Cinquecento, intarsists began to push the limits of their medium with figural scenes of ever-greater complexity; this ambitious yet perhaps quixotic attempt to rival the art of painting led to many technical and aesthetic innovations, but also to an abandonment of intarsia's natural geometric strengths and its ultimate decline as an independent art. In this volume, the first modern survey of Renaissance intarsia, a team of art historians trace the evolution of the medium through a discussion of twelve of the most important intarsia cycles. These include the famous studiolo of Federico da Montefeltro in the ducal palace at Urbino; the sacristy of Santa Maria in Organo at Verona, which Vasari described as the most beautiful in all of Italy; and the choir of Santa Maria Maggiore in Bergamo, the cartoons for which were prepared by Lorenzo Lotto. Drawing on the latest scholarship and, in some cases, newly discovered documentary evidence, the authors explain the historical context and iconography of these masterpieces, as well as their connections to the painting, sculpture, and architecture of the time. Samtida skinnryggsband med rotmarmorerade pärmpapper och förgylld titeletikett på frampärmen, oskuren inlaga (Malmö Nya Bokbinderi J. Stenkilsson). Ryggen med lätla bruksspår. Läckert exemplar i gott skick. (Företalet, in extenso:) "Sällskapet Pro Fide et Christianismo, det svenska samfundet för tro och kristligt lif, hade till uppgift att med yttersta sorgfällighet befordra kristendomens tillväxt och utöfning i Svea Rike. Sällskapet stiftades den 27 Mars 1771 af hofpredikanten dr. Karl Magnus Wrangel efter förebilden af den engelska föreningen For Promoting Christian Knowledge. Samfundet arbetade på två divisioner, en pastoraldivision och en uppfostringsdivision, och verkade hufvudsakligen genom utgifvande af en mängd smärre skrifter och cirkulär samt genom inrättandet af katekesskolor. Från år 1841 inrättades så kallade stafvareklasser för äldre barn, som ej kunde läsa innantill. Genom detta sitt intresse för undervisningen af det fattigare folkets barn blef sällskapet en banbrytare för folkskoleväsendet i vårt land. En hufvuduppgift blef med anledning af denna samfundets verksamhet åstadkommandet och utgifvandet af goda läroböcker. Den mest bekanta af dessa böcker är den så kallade Kronprinsens ABC-bok, som utgafs första gången 1780 och tillägnades Kronprins Gustaf Adolf. Barnaboken består dels af 16 af Jacob Gillberg [Värmland 1724-1793 Stockholm] graverade blad, upptagande tänkespråk för hvarje af alfabetets bokstäfver, dels af Läsebok för barn och Kort sammandrag af Christendomsunskapen, de bägge senare afdelningarne tryckta i Kongl. Tryckeriet af H. Fougt. Den utgafs i tvänne upplagor, en i kvart, som innehöll Gillbergs gravyrer samt texten och en i oktav, som endast innehöll texten. Till bägge upplagorna hörde en skriftafla äfven graverad i koppar, men icke af Gillbergs hand. Sedermera hafva af Barnaboken flera upplagor sett dagen. Då samtliga kopparplåtarna till Gillbergs gravyrer af en konstvän inköpts och ställts till Föreningens förfogande, har det synts lämpligt att göra ännu en reproduktion af ett af den framstående svenska gravörens mera uppmärksammade arbeten. Plåtarna äro af ägaren öfverlämnade till Svenskt bokindustrimuseum och någon ny upplaga kommer därför icke att utgifvas. Det har ansetts lämpligt att icke bifoga texten till Barnaboken, då meningen uteslutande varit att till Föreningens medlemmar lemna ett prof på 1700-talets kopparstickskonst, och då detta kunnat ske genom tryckning från originalplåtar, så är det af särskildt stort värde. Om Jacob Gillberg torde här icke behöfva lemnas några närmare uppgifter. Erinras må att han var född 1724 och dog 1793. Han åtnjöt anseende som en framstående kopparstickare och etsare. De större konstblad, han utgaf, tillhöra till stor del det förnämsta som svensk grafstickel frambragt. De till barnabokens kopparstick hörande verserna äro författade af rådmannen Johan Wellander, en af sin tids vittra författare, född 1735 och död 1783. Hans samlade dikter äro utgifna 1852 af P. Hanselli".

Núm. 7"). Stapled as issued in wrappers printed in red & black, somewhat scuffed and worn. Provenance: Thorsten Laurin (1875-1954), with gilt-stamped bookplate designed by Carl Larsson. Evidently a special offprint emission from Revista Española de Arte, Dec. 1933, pp. 411-429.

San Francisco, Cal., Vestkustens tryckeri, 1918, 1919, 1919. 8:o. 64; + 62; + ii + 106 sid. Illustrerade med porträtt. De två sistnämnda arbetena tryckta i endast 200 resp. 150 exemplar (här nr 26 & 128, båda med dedikation på främre omslaget till Aron Ingvall från författaren). Sammanbundna i ett ngt senare klotband (ryggtitel: "Amerikaner"), de två senare arbetena med omslagen medbundna, första arbetets främre omslag löst bifogat (beskuret). Aningen nött, men ett trevligt exemplar i solitt skick av tre rara svensk-amerikanska skrifter. Beträffande biografin över Lincoln skriver Skarstedt i förordet till tredje boken att "Den ofvan nämnda boken om Lincoln trycktes i en mycket begränsad svensk-amerikansk upplaga, men den amerikanska regeringen köpte förlagsrätten och lät oförtöfvadt utgiva en stor upplaga af boken i Sverige". En sådan upplaga finns verkligen, utgiven i Stockholm samma år. - - - Ernst Teofil Skarstedt (Bohuslän 1857-1929 Seattle) var en svensk-amerikansk författare och journalist, först biträdande redaktör på tidningen Svenska Amerikanaren och senare på Svenska Tribunen, som båda utkom i Chicago. År 1885 flyttade han till staten Washington och blev jordbrukare, men återgick 1888 till journalistiken och blev 1891 redaktör för tidningen Vestkusten i San Francisco. Skarstedt har i en mängd skrifter dokumenterat de svenska emigranternas historia och kultur i Nordamerika. - - - Three rare Swedish-American imprints, bound together in full cloth: biographies by Ernst Skarstedt of Lincoln and Roosevelt, and "American Types and Characters" (six portraits), in Swedish, printed at the Swedish "Vestkusten" printing office in San Francisco, 1918-19. Very small editions, the second and third works printed in just 120 and 150 copies (and both inscribed by the author). The Lincoln biography, also printed in a very limited edition, was reprinted in Sweden in the same year.

Beautifully produced facsimile of the English 1959 edition: "A French trade edition of Sur Marcel Duchamp by Trianon Press and the English language Grove Press trade edition Marcel Duchamp were printed simultaneously in 1959 in Paris. The print run for the English edition was 2,500 copies. Three thousand copies of the French version were produced. The Grove Press trade edition is the basis for Hauser & Wirth Publishers' 2021 facsimile edition." / "Hauser & Wirth Publishers' facsimile of the 1959 English edition of Marcel Duchamp is an exact reproduction of the original and retains all original details, including errors" (verso of title and Supplement colophon respectively). The supplement contains more than sixty archival images, many of which have never been published before, that share a portrait of Duchamp and his inner circle. Hauser & Wirth Publishers reanimates Marcel Duchamp with its reproduction of the 1959 Grove Press edition with the design firm Fluid, who recreated the original typefaces as digital fonts, positioning each letter and image exactly as they were in the original.

Volume published for the Poster exhibition which opened the first scientific session of the 7th European Conference on research into cultural heritage. - - - "The 7th European conference on Cultural Heritage research was held in Prague from 31 May to 3 June 2006. The conference was supported under the Sixth Framework Programme (Specific Support to Policy). It was organised in cooperation with the European Commission by the Institute of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (ITAM) of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic following the earlier conferences in Rome (1997), Aachen (1998), Santiago di Compostela (1999), Strasbourg (2000), Cracow (2002) and London (2004). The overall aim of the conference was the consolidation and impact assessment of results achieved in EU research projects related to the movable, immovable and infrastructure applied to cultural heritage with a special focus on exploitation and spin-offs of cultural heritage research results and testing the acceptability of new technologies and sustainability approaches by the user community, SMEs, owners, managers, conservationists and restorers of the cultural heritage. More than 280 participants from 37 countries representing a large number of research and end-user organisations from the public and private sector took part in 210 oral presentations and posters covering the plenary sessions on 'The impact of EU policies on European cultural heritage', 'Coordination of national research and education', and 'Challenges of European cultural heritage' as well as the parallel sessions on the 'movable heritage', the 'immovable heritage', 'Cities, landscapes and villages', and 'Research infrastructure' applied to cultural heritage. The poster exhibition gathered almost 100 posters related to the themes of the parallel sessions, and a 'demonstration salon' was opened to innovative products and processes".
