EA - Generali Foundation, Vienna, 1996. 8vo (23 x 16 cm) in wraps as issued. 399 pp with colour and b&w illustrations. German and English text. Fine clean copy. 1st edition. "The overall concept of the exhibition explores the notion of sculpture. Main emphasis is on how this concept has developed since the emergence of new media in the sixties and how it was introduced into the collection of the Generali Foundation. The title of the exhibition directly addresses the theme: the site where art takes place is not neutral ground but explicitly and implicitly a part of the whole. The exhibition thematizes models as well as the conceptual grasping of sculpture, the inclusion of media such as photography, film, video, and TV as well as performative aspects. The selection of works is based on the following question: starting from its origins in the late eighties, how was the basic idea of the General Foundation's collection of contemporary sculpture realized in the nineties, i.e., how is sculpture defined today? The exemplary selection of works from the collection focuses on interdisciplinary works, with film retrospectives by Valie Export and Gordon Matta-Clark at the center of the presentation. Black Box : A movie, lecture, and events hall, a "black box" is set up in the small exhibition hall. A series of events furthers the displays’ emphatically communicative character, an aspect which is integral to the content of the exhibition. This presentation structure attempts to get away from the set display of the same pieces at the same place over a certain space of time. In "White Cube/Black Box" different pieces - which can in part be selected - are shown each day. Another goal is to demonstrate the different parameters for the reception of works (film, video, installation). Film, in contrast to traditional components of an exhibition, is normally offered for a group in a precisely defined space of time and is accompanied by certain social parameters. In exhibitions, film and video is made available continually through the use of looped tapes and short clips. Important themes of this exhibition are therefore the factor of time as well as the aspect of communal versus individual consumption of art works. The Video Collection in Dan Graham's "New Design for Showing Videos" This functional sculpture, which has already been shown in conjunction with Dan Graham's videos in the course of our previous exhibition (Video/Architecture/Performance by Dan Graham), is another central element of the show. Here, the video space is used as a video library for the first time, i.e., for the Foundation's video collection, which has been built up greatly in this connection. VALIE EXPORT Acquisition and Restoration of the Entire Cinematographic Oeuvre: First retrospective in Austria: 28 January to 16 March 1996. The Generali Foundation has acquired and restored VALIE EXPORT’s entire cinematographic oeuvre, making it available to the Austrian public for the first time as a retrospective. The works on display include the film installations "Ping Pong," "Up+Down+On+Off," "Adjunct Dislocations," and "Splitscreen-Solipsism," which have not been shown since the seventies. They are being shown in a cycle each Friday and Saturday from February to mid-March. VALIE EXPORT was awarded the biennial EA-Generali Foundation Sculpture Prize in autumn 1995. Gordon Matta-Clark: Restoration and Acquisition of the Complete Films Film retrospective: 26 March to 13 April 1996. Gordon Matta-Clark (1943-1978, New York) became known for his "cuttings," interventions he carried out on buildings. The artist documented these temporary works on film. However, Matta-Clark also used film analytically and reflectively and it played a major role in his multi-media "gesamt" work (e.g., with "surveillance" being the buzzword in "Chinatown Voyeur" or with the exploration of urban underground scenarios in New York and Paris, as in "Substrait" and "Sous Sols de Paris"). Until recently, Matta-Clark's films were only available as video copies of the original films, which are in a poor state. About half the films were restored upon acquisition by the Generali Foundation, the second half were saved through the support of other institutions (including the Musée d'art moderne; Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris; and IVAM, Barcelona). The Generali Foundation has obtained worldwide first-showing rights for the films restored with its funds; moreover, it has also acquired the presentation rights for all of Matta-Clark’s films and videos. In creating the film program, in addition to structuring the content, attention was given to presenting the films in small segments as a counterpoint to the other exhibition components. Further works from the collection are available alongside the presentations in the Black Box and in the video room. Curator: Sabine Breitwieser. Exhibition Oganization: Daniela Stern.

Kirkegaards Antikvariat
kir59479
Primary Information, 2019. Small 8vo in wraps as issued. 575 pages. Light wear to cover. Essential writings from the downtown New York legend and polymath, pioneer of both structural film and drone musis. Tony Conrad (1940–2016) was a legendary multidisciplinary artist known for his groundbreaking contributions in experimental film, music, and video. Upon moving to New York City in 1962, he began making music with John Cale, La Monte Young and Marian Zazeela in the Theatre of Eternal Music, a group that helped shape what would come to be known as minimalist music. He later went on to perform with Lou Reed in a pre-Velvet Underground band called The Primitives and cut a classic 1972 record with the German Krautrock band Faust that set a new standard for drone music. In the 1960s and 1970s, Conrad was perhaps best known for his contribution to film, where he helped to redefine structural filmmaking with The Flicker and Yellow Movies. Conrad went on to create an extensive body of work in a variety of media such as installation, photography, and performance until his death in 2016. Throughout his life, Conrad also wrote prolifically on topics including his own work (and that of his peers), music, art, media theory and activism. Writings is the first book devoted solely to Conrad's writing, collecting 57 hard-to-find or previously unpublished texts from 1961 to 2012. These writings provide a critical lens into the artist's multitudinous identities and wide-ranging creative pursuits and, as with his diverse artistic output, consistently challenge and dismantle authoritarian notions of culture.

Lawrence, Tim:
Kirkegaards Antikvariat
kir59699
Duke University Press, 2016. Thick and heavy paperback. XXI, 578 pages. Light shelfwear, else a clean and unread copy. "For the last 20 years London-based author and party organiser Tim Lawrence has dedicated himself to excavating the history of New York City party culture and bringing some of the most powerful aspects of that culture to London’s dance scene, from where it has ricocheted around the world. Having conducted the first set of major interviews with David Mancuso, Lawrence started to put on Loft-style Lucky Cloud Sound System parties with David and friends in London in June 2003. In early 2004 he published Love Saves the Day: A History of American Dance Music Culture, 1970-79, which tracked the influence of the Loft on the wider New York DJ, dance and disco scene. In 2009 his biography of the iconic musician Arthur Russell became the first book to map the wider downtown music scene. These beautifully written and politically insightful histories have educated, inspired and celebrated the previously overlooked foundations of contemporary dance music. Lawrence’s most recent publication, Life & Death On The New York Dancefloor, 1980 – 1983, published in late 2016, shines a light on 'one of the most dynamic and creative periods in the history of New York City'. Falling between the more regularly celebrated sounds of disco, house and techno, the period produced a uniquely hybrid series of sounds that never acquired a settled name. This led them to be largely ignored by historians and even DJs, yet the power of the period’s music and the scenes it birthed, Lawrence argues, remains undeniable. Met with a rapturous response, Life and Death On The New York Dance Floor saw Lawrence on the road for most of the next year as he spread the word about the characters, the records, the clubs and the bands that shaped the post-Disco, post-Punk, and burgeoning Hip Hop landscapes of New York City during the early 1980s—a period when freedom still ruled."

Copenhagen: Informations Forlag, 1980. 4to. Original photoillustrated softcover as issued. 160 pages, illustrated throughout with high contrast black and white photographs by a large number of famous Danish photographers like Morten Bo, Henrik Saxgren and others. Not a very pretty copy: creased spine and discolorings to front cover edge (see photos), a contemporary bold gift inscription with red marker to inner cover. Else clean and overall a good, acceptable copy. First edition, 1st printing. "In late April 1980, the police first cleared the playground area Byggeren amid violent protests from residents and activists. This led to a time of unprecedented fighting between police and citizens in Nørrebro. Barricades were built on both Åboulevard and Nørrebrogade - and for several weeks the area was under a state of emergency. In 1980, Morten Langkilde was one of the younger members of Politiken's team of photographers and spent almost 24 hours in the conflict zone. "At the time, I had never seen anything like it. That kind of fighting. In Copenhagen. It was quite extreme," he says. Since then, the case of the Builder has often been called the start of the bz movement. At the time, the media was busy reporting that the fighting in Nørrebro was fought by 'spoilt leftists' and 'left-wing provocateurs'. But the truth was that it was the whole of Nørrebro that was fighting. Parents, educators, shopkeepers, even ordinary citizens. One was tired of the unplanned redevelopment and the decisions that were made. The actual fight took place around 1 May 1980. But in reality the fight already began on a Sunday in 1973, when a lorry drove into a building site. A very popular construction playground emerged. In June 1977, the municipality decided to close the six-year temporary institution in Todesgade. On 15 August 300 officers showed up. But they were stopped by 1,000 local residents. After several months of occupation, the residents reopened the institute. But on 10 January 1978 the police showed up even more numerous together with several craftsmen." (Luciano Zuccaccia)

University of Minnesota Press, 1971. Publishers hardcover, with fine jacket. IX, (1) 277 pp. Fine clean copy. First edition thus - uncommon. "For the last century and a half, Friedrich Schlegel (1772–1829) has enjoyed a reputation for being the critical grey eminence behind the coming to power of the Romantic Movement. It was Schlegel, in his three series of aphoristic fragments (Lyceum, Athenaeum, and Ideas), who actually first defined and employed the word "romantic" in the present sense; and it was he who in a chaotic, fragmentary, and often mysterious but forceful manner first proclaimed the doctrine that was to usher in the modern age in literature. He too was among the first to put his new program into practice in the shape of his unfinishedLucinde,a work variously denounced as pornography and heralded as a forerunner of modern novelistic experimentation, and probably the most famous novel to come out of German Romanticism. Both the Fragments and Lucinde, along with a brilliant tour de force, the "Essay on Incomprehensibility," are available now for the first time in a complete English translation in this volume, together with a brief scholarly introduction. This translation will enable non-German readers to examine at first hand the work of a man whom Rene Wellek has called "one of the greatest critics of history." ".

New York : Aperture Foundation, 2005. Large heavy 4to. Original red clothed hardcover with mounted plate, decorated endpapers, copiously illustrated with colour photographs, illustrated throughout with intro in English. Light wear to exterior else fine copy. First edition." The intimate ache of the dollhouse and its air of manipulation (whether as consumer object or ventriloquist dummy) has become as identified with pioneering photographer Laurie Simmons as with Ibsen. She's even designed a dollhouse for a toy company. Mostly self-taught, Simmons began working in the 1970s, when color and staged tableaux were first being explored by fine-art photographers, and has since mapped out a world all her own, mostly in haunting miniature. Over the past 25 years, her photographs have conveyed a bittersweet nostalgia for the 1950s, while edgily commenting on consumerism, feminism and other fraught aspects of postwar American culture. The accompanying essay by Kate Linker concentrates on selected series that cover the artist's entire oeuvre--from "Ventriloquism," "Walking Objects" and "Lying Objects" to the 1997 "Self-Portraits" and "Café of the Inner Mind".
