First full exposition of Röntgen's discovery of X-rays, the foundation stones of roentgenology, unveiling a new form of matter and offering a new revolutionary method for medical diagnosis. In order to ensure priority for his discovery, Röntgen first published the two first papers (Erste-Zweite Mittheilung) as offprints from "Sitzungsberichte der Physikalisch-medicinischen Gesellschaft zu Würtzburg" in 1895-96, but his discovery only finds its full form in the offered papers, as "Dritte Mittheilung" appears here."Aside from its obvious applications, Roentgen's discovery galvanized the world of physics and led to a rash of further discoveries that so completely overturned the old concepts of the science, that the discovery of X-rays is sometimes considered the first stroke of the Second Scientific Revolution. (The First Scientific Revolution is, of course that which included Galileo and his experiments on falling bodies). Within a matter of months, investigations of X rays led to the discovery of radioactivity by Becquerel....The importence of the discovery was well recognized in its own time. In 1896 Roentgen shared the Rumford Medal with Lenard and in 1901, when Nobel Prizes were set up.the first to be honoured with a Nobel Prize in Physics was Roentgen." Kbh., 1843-45. Et nydeligt samtidigt hshirtbd. m. stregforgyldn. på ryg. Brunplettet. M. alle deltitelblade samt det fælles titelbl. (4), 52, 62, 84, 59, 70, 111 pp.Nice contemporary half cloth with single gilt lines to spine. Fully complete with all half titles and the joint title-page. Originaludgave. Himmelstrup 85.First edition of Kierkegaard's important eighteen upbuilding discourses, which comprise his two, three, and four upbuilding discourses from the years 1843-45, with the joint title-page of all eighteen. The work constitutes Kierkegaard's religious works, which supplement his theological and philosophical ones. The first upbuilding discourses were published the same year as Either-Or, and it is interesting to note that in opposition to his major philosophical works, the religious upbuilding discourses actually bear the name of the author on the title-page, - a fact that was by no means incidental. While the pseudonymous works could make one doubt the religiousness of the author, the parallelly written religious discourses stress the fact that we are dealing with an author, who was religious from the very beginning, -a fact that Kierkegaard also wished to establish himself; in his journals he clearly states that the religious discourses bear as much significance for his work as a whole as do the larger pseudonymous works, "I began with "Either-Or" and two upbuilding discourses..." he says, and explains that he intended the upbuilding, the religious, to advance, and that he wanted to show "that the writer was not an esthetic author who in the course of time grew older and for that reason became religious" (Journals, IX A 227).The importance of the upbuilding discourses and the close relationship they have with the major works and Kierkegaard's philosophical development also becomes evident with the fact that every pseudonymous work was accompanied by a little collection of "upbuilding discourses" until "Concluding Postscript" appeared.Himmelstrup 85.

RINGGOLD, CADWALADER.

lyn53713
Washington, Jno. T. Towers, 1851. 4to. In publishers original full pictoral green cloth. Front and back board with embossed title and ornamentation, showing an eagle holding a banner and anchor beneath whom Columbia sits holding the shield of California with a bear asleep at her feet. Front board in gold. Lower front board with gilt stamp. Stamp to front free end-paper and title-page. Light wear to extremities and internally with light occassional miscolouring. 44. pp. + 11 lithographic plates including frontispiece and 6 folding maps. Rare first edition of Commander Ringgold's charts, views, and sailing directions, for the entrance to San Francisco Bay and the inland waterways; the most accurate charts up until that time of the areas covered.According to his introduction, Ringgold was persuaded by the citizens of San Francisco to undertake the task of accurately surveying the seaward approaches to the coast and the interior because of the vast amount of ship traffic that the area endured because of the Gold Rush and because, more ominously, of the "thousands of human beings...anxiously flocking thither, often in open boats, ill suited to the exposed navigation leading to the interior" (p. [5]). The survey began in August 1849, with Ringgold commanding the chartered brig Colonel Fremont. His surveys resulted in the present publication in 1851 which quickly became exceedingly popular. It was published in a total of five editions in 1851-52.A 12mo-edition with text only was published prior to this publication, but this is the first edition to include the maps and charts (and the important comments to these) which essentially made this the most important and used survey of the San Francisco Bay area in the 1850ies. Sabin 71425 (Sabin only calls for 8 plates).

Urbino, Bartholomeo, e Simone Ragusij fratelli, 1592. Small 4to. Hcalf (19th century), gilt spine, raised bands, titlelabel with gilt lettering. Spine a little rubbed and fronthinge weakening. Corners strenghtened with vellum. Ff (4),82. With around 90 woodcuts in the text including one on the title-page. A stamp on verso of titlepage (the Salamander Collection). Title-page with light browning. A few scattered brownspots, but internally clean. Verso of last leaf with errata. Light fraying to the first 3 leaves. Second Italian edition of Heron's main work (Spiritalium), being his first publication. The work stimulated and contributed substantially to the interest in pneumatics that arose suddenly in the late 16th century and led to the work of Toricelli and Boyle. The "Pneumatics" was not published in Greek until 1693. It is one of the major sources to our knowledge of the techniques and mechanics of Antiquity, and the many hydraulic and mechanical inventions by Hero are here depicted for the first time in print. The work includes studies of pneumatics and mechanics and include 89 illustrations of different inventions, such as siphons, fountains, engines, an account of a small stationary steam-engine (which is of the form now known as Avery's patent, the double-force pump etc., which "by the union of (compressed) air, earth, fire, and water, and the concurrence of...elementary principles..., supply the most pressing wants of the human life, (or) produce amazement and alarm." The book describes many gadgets and magical tricks and includes the first suggestion of a steam engine (see f. 53 verso). XV,766 pp., 9 folded engraved plates and 1 map (the map in facsimile). The first 8 leaves with a faint dampstain. A few scattered marginal brownspots. The scarce first edition (the first part only, but alone-standing) of Sparrman's famous travelling account which has been called the '"most trustworthy account of the Cape Colony and the various races of people then residing in it" that had been published in the 18th century. The work is one of the most importent investigations of the South African fauna in the second half of the 18th century. He sailed for the Cape of Good Hope in January 1772 to take up a post as a tutor. When James Cook arrived there later in the year at the start of his second voyage, Sparrman was taken on as assistant naturalist to Johann and Georg Forster. After the voyage he returned to Cape Town in July 1775 and practiced medicine, earning enough to finance a journey into the interior.

AMPÈRE, ANDRÉ-MARIE

Paris, Crochard, 1825. 8vo. Bound in contemporary half calf with gilt lettering to spine. In: "Annales de Chimie et de Physique, Par MM. Gay-Lussac et Arago.", tome 29. Entire volume offered. Very light occassional foxing, otherwise a fine and clean copy with no institutional stamps. Pp. 381-404; 373-381. [Entire volume: 448 pp. + folded plate]. First appearance of this famous memoir, in which Ampère presented his collected results on electrodynamics to the French Academy, creating the foundation of 19th century developments in electricity and magnetism. In the words of James Clark Maxwell, "We can scarcely believe that Ampère really discovered the law of action by means of the experiments which he describes. We are led to suspect, what, indeed, he tells us himself, that he discovered the law by some process which he has not shown us, and that when he had afterwards built up a pefect demonstration he removed all traces of the scaffolding by which he raised it." The offered memoir was published BEFORE the famous "Theorie mathématique des phénomènes électro-dynamiques uniquement déduite de L'expérience", which did not appear until 1827. That 1827-Memoire incorporates, together with a new presentation of Ampère's results from 1820, 1822, 1823, the offered memoir (1825). (Horblit: 100 - Dibner: 62). "From 1814 until 1820 Ampére did not perform the kind of research that would have made it into the annals of the histrory of science, but on September 11, 1820 when he heard Francois Arago speak about Oersted's work, he got fresh inspiration and started the work that made him famous. Arago related how Oersted had found that a steady electric current influences the orientation of a compass needle. After a weak Ampère had determined experimentally that that two straight, parallel, and current-carrying, wires execute a force on each other. The magnitude of the force is inversely proportional to the distance between the wires and proportional to the strenghts of the current..... During the following years he continued his researches, both experimentally and theoretically. he built an instrument for measuring electricity that later was developed into the galvanometer. Finally in 1825 he presented his collected results to the Academy IN ONE OF THE MOST CELEBRATED MEMOIRS IN THE HISTORY OF NATURAL PHILOSOPHY (The paper offered)." (Citizen's Compendium, p. 2). - Norman No 47. The volumes contain many other notable papers by: Wöhler, Fresnel, Marcet, Berzelius, Felix Savart, De la Rive, Braconnet, Boussingault, Magnus, Poncelet, Vaugelin, Poisson, Gay-Lussac, Faraday, Laplace etc.

Barcelona, Edicions 62, 1982 8vo. In the original printed wrappers. Light wear to extremities, spine with a few light stains. A nice and clean copy. 412 pp. The genealogical tree included in the pagionation on pp. 124-125. First Catalan translation of Darwin's landmark "Origin of Species". Translated by Santiago Alberti and Constança Alberti. Edition by Joan Senent-Josa and Montserrat Vallmitjana; prologue by Thomas Glick. Published on the centennial year of Darwin's death. The same year is the 20th anniversary of thefoundation of the publisher, Edicions 62, whose foundational mission was to publish texts in Catalan, both original and in translation—and not rarely on controversial subjects. This was seenas a political affirmation of the Catalan identity, purposedly crushed by the Franco regime sincethe Civil War. Edicions 62 decided to publish this translation of Darwin's Origin as the very first title of theirseries "Clàssics del Pensament Modern" (Classics of Modern Thought). The Series would go onto include translations of Adam Smith, Diderot, Karl Marx, Montesquieu, Freud, Tocqueville,Einstein, Lacan, and dozens more from the previous three centuries, which had never been translated to Catalán. Previously a 1980-edition (Barcelona, Bruguera, 1980, Blanco & Llorca 63) has been referred to as the first Catalan translation. This, however, is a bibliographical error since the copy referred to is in Spanish. Freeman F2447.Blanco & Llorca 68.

SCHELLING, F.W.J.
Herman H. J. Lynge & Søn A/S
lyn60405
Tübingen, Heerbrandt, 1795. 8vo. Bound with later blank blue wrapper in recent marbled paper covered boards. Original wrappers or blanks pasted on to the blue wrappers, heavily annotated in contemporary hand. Title-page reinforced and with misolouring to inner margin. Dampstain to upper margin of last two leaves, otherwise internally fine. 62 pp. Rare first edition of Schelling first published work. "When he was 19 years old Schelling wrote his first philosophical work, Über die Möglichkeit einer Form der Philosophie überhaupt (1795; On the Possibility and Form of Philosophy in General), which he sent to Fichte, who expressed strong approval.” (Encyclopedia Britannica). Schelling’s tract was a manifesto for Fichte’s foundationalist programme, an argument for the necessity of founding philosophy of the basis of a single selfevident first principle. There must be one first principle, Schelling argued, because if there were two such principles, there would have to be some higher synthesis of them, which would then be the first principle. Along with J.G. Fichte and Hegel, Schelling ranks as the most influential thinker of German Idealism. He stands in the centre of this most important and influential of philosophical traditions, and with his philosophy of nature, his anti-Cartesian view of subjectivity and his later critique of Hegelian Idealism, Schelling continues to be of the utmost importance to the development of continental philosophy to this day.

BESSEL, (FRIEDRICH WILHELM) - THE FIRST MEASURE OF THE DISTANCE TO A STAR.
Herman H. J. Lynge & Søn A/S
lyn49473
Paris, Bachelier, 1838 a. 1840. 4to. No wrappers. In: "Comptes Rendus Hebdomadaires des Séances de L'Academie des Sciences", Tome 7, No 19 and Tome 10, No 17/18. With title-ages to vol. 7 and 10. Pp. (769-) 803 a. pp. (671-) 717. (Entire issues offered). Bessel's papers: pp. 785-793 a. pp. 703-710. Stamp on both titlepages. The second titlepage with a fes brownspots, otherwise clean and fine. First appearance of a milestone paper in astronomy, giving the solution of the great problem of distances in the universe which had baffled astronomers ever since the time of Copernicus, announcing the FIRST SUCCESSFUL DISPLACEMENT OR PARALLAX OF A FIXED STAR and hence deducing the FIRST RELIABLE DISTANCE OF THE EARTH TO A FIXED STAR. The parallax observed corresponded to ab. 600.000 times that of the earth from the sun. On these grounds Bessel calculated the distance to about 11 light years, and this was confirmed by fresh investigations by Bessel in 1839-40 (the second paper offered). In 1842-43 it was also confirmed by C.A.F. Peters at Pulkowa. It is the first published instance of the fathom-line thrown into celestial space.Bessel communicated his observations in Comptes Rendus, in a letter to Humboldt (the offered paper dated Nov. 5, 1838), in "Monthly Notices" in letter to J. Herschel, and in "Astronomische Nachrichten" Vol. 16, No 365-66 (pp. 65-96), 1838), where a more detail account was published.Ther paper "Bestimmung der Entfernung des 61sten Stern des Schwans" in "Astronomische Nachrichten" is dated at the end: Altona 1838, Dec. 13.Bessel's investigation was hailed by John Herschel when Bessel was awarded the R.A.S. gold medal "The greatest and most glorious triumph which practical astronomy has ever witnessed". "For determining the parallax of 61 Cygni, Bessel selected two comparison stars of magnitude 9-10 at distances of roughly eight and twelve minutes of arc. 61 Cygni is a physical double star whose components differ in brightness by less than one magnitude. The distance of sixteen seconds of arc between the components favored the accuracy of the determination of the parallax because pointing could be carried out with two star images. After observing for eighteen months, by the fall of 1838 Bessel had enough measurements for the determination of a reliable parallax. He found that p = 0.314? with a mean error of ±:0.020?. This work was published in the Astronomische Nachrichten (1838), the first time the distance of a star became known. Bessel’s value for the parallax shows excellent agreement with the results obtained by extensive modern photographical parallax determinations,..." FREDERIK VI - DE DANSKE JØDERS FRIHEDSBREV.
Herman H. J. Lynge & Søn A/S

Kiøbenhavn, Schultz, 1814. 4to. Without wrappers, as issued. 8 pp and three folded tables (Litra A-C) + Reglement: 8 pp. 4to. Uden omslag som udkommet. 8 pp. samt 3 foldeskemaer (Litra A-C) + Reglement: 8 pp. First printing of the two decrees that constitute the seminal "Letter of Liberty for the Jews", establishing Jewish emancipation in Denmark as one of the first countries in the world. With this groundbreaking decree of 1814, the Danish Jews were basically given the same rights and duties as other Danish citizens; at the end of the 19th century, many Danish Jews belonged to upper society, and almost all Jews were well integrated into Danish society. The first Jews in Denmark settled in Altona (then a Danish city, until 1864) in 1584. In 1641 the first shul was built, and at about the same time, the first Jew, Dr Jonah Charizi, moved to Copenhagen, he died in 1626. In 1684 Israel David and Meyer Goldschmidt received royal permission to have Minyanim (services) in their homes. The growth of the community was quite slow, and by 1726 there were 65 Jewish families (331 persons). In 1787 there were about 250 families (some 1,200 people). In 1813 there was an attempt to have anti Jewish laws established, but to no avail, and finally, on March 29 1814, a royal decree was issued giving Jews Equal Rights. Jewish emancipation in Europe occurred gradually between the end of the 18th century and the first half of the 20th century. Jewish emancipation followed the Age of Enlightenment, after which various nations repealed or superseded previous discriminatory laws applied specifically against Jews where they resided. Before the emancipation, most Jews were isolated in residential areas from the rest of the society, and many European Jews worked to achieve integration in the societies and broader education. Jewish involvement in gentile society began during the Age of Enlightenment. Haskalah, the Jewish movement supporting the adoption of enlightenment values, advocated an expansion of Jewish rights within European society. Haskalah followers advocated "coming out of the ghetto", not just physically but also mentally and spiritually. In 1790, in the United States, President George Washington wrote a letter establishing that Jews in America share the same full equal rights, including the right to practice their religion, with all other Americans. On September 28, 1791, revolutionary France became the second country in Europe, after Poland 500 years earlier, to emancipate its Jewish population, and in 1814 Denmark finally had its decree "Letter of Liberty for the Jews", becoming the first country after America, Poland and France to give equal rights to Jews. Belgium and Greece were the neext countries to follow suit, 16 years after Denmark.

Descartes here published his general system of epistemology and physics - including his Vortice-theory, the impossibility of a vacuum, etc. - with its Copernicanism mitigated by the idea that all motion is relative. In Descartes’s letter prefaced to this French translation of the Principles, he writes that two, and only two, conditions determined whether the first principles proposed could be accepted as true: "First they must be so clear and evident that the mind of man cannot doubt their truth when it attentively applies itself to consider them"; and secondly, everything else must be deducible from them. But he went on to admit,"It is really only God alone who has perfect wisdom, that is to say, who has a complete knowledge of the truth of all things." Brunet II:611.

Kjøbenhavn (Copenhagen), C. Steens Forlag, 1828 - 1835 & 1827. 8vo. Three parts uniformly bound in three contemporary (original?) full cloth binding with gilt lettering to spine. Extremities with soiling and hinges on vol. 1 partly split. Bookblock split between quires in a few places but internally generally very nice and clean. (Afbildninger af danske oeconomiske Planter:) 288 plates; (Giftplanter:) 40 plates, all handcoloured. Each plate with an accompanying leaf with text. Complete. First edition of this extensive botanical work, widely regarded as being of the most beautiful work on plants in Danish. Heger's books were published in collaboration with the bookseller and publisher Christian Steen (1786–1861), one of the first to operate a children's and picture book publishing firm on a larger scale. Steen made significant investments in lithographic reproductions of art and was a pioneer in terms of maps and atlases. Steen was not afraid to take on major tasks such as Heger's flora, and he was able to carry out all the work on them within the publishing house's walls. The copper plates were engraved under his supervision, printed on his presses, and colored by his employees. Later, he expanded the company with both a paper mill and a type foundry. Steen's editions of Heger's botanical works are still considered among the most beautiful Danish botanical books. Biblioteca Danica. I, 826.Nissen BBI 837.

NECKER, M.

Paris, L'Imprimerie Royale, 1781. 4to. Bound in a very nice contemporary full mottled calf with richly gilt spine with five raised bands. Black leather title label with gilt lettering to spine. Gilt edges and gilt borders to boards. Spine with light wear, title label lacking lower right corner. Four small holes to hinges. Hinges are, however, firm and strong. First plate lacking a piece of top right corner, not affecting text. Overall a very fine and attractive copy. Pp. (4), 116 + 3 large folded plates. First edition of Necker's seminal work which constitutes the very first public presentation of the French government's income and expenditures. The report stated that ordinary revenues in France were exceeding expenditure by over 10 million livres. The health of the accounts as reported in the Compte rendu boosted confidence among lenders and ordinary people, who saw Necker as a strong financial manager due to his prior work as a banker; the report strengthen his reputation further. As a consequence, the French government was able to raise new loans to pay for the costs of continued involvement in the American War of Independence. Thereby he used his economic skills not only to help the domestic economy but also as a mean of foreign political pressure. "In 1781 Necker's famous Compte Rendu au Roi appeared, addressed rather to the public than to the head of the state. His popularity increased; the success of his report, the first of its class, though incomplete, was great." (The New palgrave)The French bankier Jacques Necker, who was appointed French Minister of Finance during three periods (1777-1781, 1788-1789, 1789-1790), was famous for his opposition to the physiocrats. He replaced Turgot in as Minister of Finance in 1776, and attacked Turgot's plan for free trade in grains. He initiated economic reforms which were designed to help the poor French economy. Instead of using the more traditional method of raising taxes he, on the contrary, raised the interest rates and kept the comparatively low income-tax. His will and ambitions to inform and educate the people together with the fact that he was a commoner made him popular with the people. Partly due to his public popularity, on July 11th 1789 he was dismissed, an act which caused public rioting. These riots, combined with the economic crisis and high inflated corn-prices, led to the storming of the Bastille on July 14th 1789.Einaudi 4094Mattioli 2549

WOLFF, CHRISTIAN.
Herman H. J. Lynge & Søn A/S

Frankfurt & Leipzig, Renger, 1728. 4to. In a nice contemporary Cambridge-style mirror binding with four raised bands and richly gilt spine. Small paper-label pasted on to top of spine. Light wear to extremities. Internally with occassional heavy toning due to poor paper quality, otherwise a good copy. (16), 866, (19) pp. + 1 plate. The uncommon first edition of one of Wolff’s main work in which he presented his concept of philosophy as a total science following Descartes’ belief that all science could be deduced from simple principles. In the history of logical reasoning, methodology, principles of logical inference, the classification of propositions and the structure of logical arguments it still stands as a highly important work. To reach a broader audience Wolff decided to published his works in Latin, the present being his first Latin-language publication. “Christian Wolff (1679–1754) was a philosopher, mathematician, and scientist of the German Enlightenment. He is widely and rightly regarded as the most important and influential German philosopher between Leibniz and Kant. His scholarly output was prolific, numbering more than 50 (most multi-volume) titles, in addition to dozens of shorter essays and prefaces and nearly 500 book reviews. Through his series of textbooks, published first in German and then in Latin, Wolff made signal contributions to nearly every area of philosophical investigation of his time, including but not limited to logic, metaphysics, ethics, political philosophy, and aesthetics. Wolff is perhaps best known in his role as (co-)founder of the “Leibnizian-Wolffian philosophy”, and while Wolff himself rejected the term, the philosophical system it designates quickly gained broad, if not universal, acceptance within German universities in the first half of the eighteenth century.” (Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy).
