Strassburg, Balthassar Beck, 1552. 4to. In contemporary blindstamped half pigskin-binding over wooden boards with later marbled paper covering the boards. Endpapers renewed. Upper part of spine with title paper-label. Wear to extremities and front board partly detached. Last blank leaf with annotations in contemporary hand. Internally fine and clean. (6), XCVIII, (7), (blank), (4), CLV, (8) ff. One woodcut illustration in text. Rare later edition of Ryff’s first part of “Kleinen Apoteck” and second part of “kleinen Teutschen Apoteck” - his highly popular manual of domestic medicine and cookery. Ryff in general wrote for a lay audience and his texts were all published in German, rather than Latin. “Ryff had no scruples in appropriating material wherever he could find it. Ryff is known to as one of the most notorious plagiarists who robbed the works of others, and therefore brought on himself the wrath of his contemporaries who showed no mercy for his short comings, either as a man or as an author” (Hagelin, Materia Medica, p. 58). Versalius even called him “the Strasbourg plagiarist.” What his contemporaries criticized him for eventually turned out to be the strength of his publications. He managed to popularize medical knowledge and make, what used to be an esoteric knowledge only available for the few, available to a broad audience. His ability to make medical knowledge available for the layman and the fact that he wrote in German later earned him flattering title of being the “Luther of Medicine”. “Walther Hermann Ryff (c.1500-c.1548) was a German surgeon and author. While little is known about his life, he probably studied pharmacy in Basel. He served as the city apothecary in the northern German town of Güstrow, then moved on to Strasbourg, where he served as city physician from 1532-1540. He left Strasbourg in 1544 following a legal suit involving plagiarism – one of the defining features of his literary career – and went on to Frankfurt, Mainz, Nuremberg, and Kulmbach. He died in Würzburg.” (Bernard Becker Medical Library). Durling 4018Not in Waller

STENQUIST, DAVID.

Stockholm, R.W. Statlanders Boktryckeri, 1935 + 1930. Large 4to. 2 vols in original printed wrappers. 1st part with some spine wear and a bit of wear to corners. Wrappers of second part with a bit of light brownspotting. Both parts with stamps to front wrappers and title-pages, library markings to wrappers, and printed tape-strips across wrappers, all from the Danish Meteorological Institute (from the archive of which this set has been sold directly). 79 + 17 pp. Richly illustrated. First printing of Stenquist's landmark work on earth currents, which includes his seminal scientific description of the great storm of May 1921 that has turned out to be one of the most significant reports in the history of geomagnetic storms and space weather. The work is of fundamental importance to extreme weather forecasting and is a classic in the field. "The most spectacular (and most dangerous) examples of GIC impact were two destructive fires-the first in Sweden around 02:00 GMT on 15 May and the second in the United States around an hour later. The Swedish event occurred in a telephone exchange in the town of Karlstad, 260 km west of Stockholm. This event was widely reported around the world... It was also the subject of contemporary study by David Stenquist, a Swedish scientist and engineer, who had a long interest in what we would now call GIC impacts on telecommunications systems. One of his narrative reports on the event is included in his 1925 memoir on earth currents (Stenquist, 1925), and another is reproduced by Karsberg et al. (1959). They both outline how the operators at Karlstad exchange first experienced problems (equipment anomalies and faint smoke) around 01:00, followed by a period of quiet, before the main fire started around 02:00 leading to extensive equipment damage. Stenquist also highlighted a near-miss incident at Ånge, some 380 km north west of Stockholm, that was simultaneous with the Karlstad fire. This experienced a threat similar to that fire, but where the initial problems were sufficient to trigger preventive measures that avoided major damage. In his later analysis of the Karlstad fire (Albinson, 2018; Engström, 1928; Stenquist, 1925), Stenquist noted that this site was vulnerable to strong GIC, because it was on the 400 km route of the major communications lines between Oslo and Stockholm, and this route was vulnerable because of its east-west orientation. His insights into engineering design of the communications lines enabled him to estimate the geoelectric fields that created the damaging GIC. He showed that fields of at least 6 V/km were required to cause the observed melting of fuses, "tubes de fusion," in copper wires, and that a field of 20 V/km would have caused more damage than observed (melting of fuses in iron wires). As a result he suggested that 10 V/km would be a reasonable estimate of the average geoelectric field in central Sweden at the time of the Karlstad fire." (Hapgood). "Over the past decade the public perception of space weather has changed markedly so that it is now considered a major societal risk alongside other natural hazards including pandemic disease, extremes of temperature, coastal and river flooding, earthquakes, and volcanic activity. As a result of this step change in public perception, improved understanding of severe space weather, and its impacts, is now a vital element in the scientific evidence sought by policy-makers responsible for societal resilience. Those policy-makers require information on both the likelihood, and the adverse impacts, of severe space weather, just as they do for other natural hazards. Only then can they integrate space weather into wider plans to ensure societal resilience against the whole range of natural hazards....A key element in this evidence is the likely timelines of extreme space weather events. Such knowledge enables us to build scenarios that give insights into the spatial and temporal distribution of adverse impacts, and into the information that will be available to enable timely decision-making before, during and after an extreme event. They are also vital for exercises to test mitigation plans and to train key personnel in government and industry. Scenarios are also critical inputs for realistic studies on the socio-economic impact of space weather. This study addresses one route to scenario development, namely, a review of previous severe space weather events, and specifically focuses on one outstanding case, the great storm of 13-16 May 1921, and particularly the very intense activity on 14/15 May." (Mike Hapgood: Space Weather. The Great Storm of May 1921: An Exemplar of a Dangerous Space Weather Event).

Stara Sagora, 1910. 8vo. Contemporary half cloth with gilt lettering to spine. Spine with wear. Upper inner corner of title-page with repair, missing the 'K' in 'Karl'. Two last leaves with marginal repairs, not affecting text. Light occassional brownspots throughtout. XXX, (2), 598, (2) pp. + frontiespiece of Marx. The very rare full Bulgarian translation by Georgi Bakalov from 1910 published simultaneously with Dimitar Blagoev's translation. Quite extraordinary two different Bulgarian translations, both complete, were made at the same time.Interestingly both translations seems to have been actively used though the 20ies and 30ies and both translations were reprinted simultaneously in 1930-31), both edited by Todor Pavlov. To our best knowledge Bulgarian is the only language which have had two complete translation published at the same time. Georgi Bakalov published his translation from the German, in his hometown Stara Zagora. The publisher was The Liberal Club, which was a printshop rather than a proper publisher. He was also a member of Bulgarian Social Democratic Party as of 1891 and, likely much similar to many of the early Bulgarian socialists, was active in education and socalled 'uchitelsko delo' (teachers' affairs). In 1891-93 he studied in Geneva and quickly befriended Plekhanov, whom he translated in the 1890s.OCLC only list no copies

(København), 1731. Contemporary half leather, spine with four raised bands and coloured leather title labels. Five volumes bound in one. From the library of the Norwegian collector Jonas Skougaard. Front board of vol. 1 detached. (272; 280; 316; 286; 244) pp. An attractive copy of the first collected edition of Holberg’s comedies as they stood in 1731. When the Grønnegade Theatre closed and Holberg ceased writing comedies, he gathered his plays into five volumes under the title Den Danske Skue-Plads (The Danish Stage). The edition contains ten previously unpublished comedies, including Henrich og Pernille, Diderich Menschen-Skræk, and Hexerie eller Blind Alarm. Holberg was the first Danish author to achieve international recognition and to be translated into several languages. Before him, Danes lacked confidence in their own language and regarded Denmark as a peripheral outpost to the great literary traditions of France, England, and Germany. His celebrated comedies are still performed today. A very rare early edition, containing ten plays never before printed. Ehrencron-Müller I, 180-190; Skougaard I, 105; Johansen 13, 1-5.

Leather on spine cracked, with minor loss of the gilt ornamentation. Small paper-label pasted on to top of spine. Front free end-paper with a list of content in contemporary hand. First leaves of "Dialogus Von der herrlichen" soiled and first five leaves with repair in lower outer corner, not affecting text. "Dialogus Von der herrlichen..." is affected by dampstains throughout, otherwise a nice copy. (4), 455, (25) pp; (4), 310, (4) ff.; 192 pp.; (16), 112 pp.; 11 pp.; (4), (24) pp, An attractive sammelband containing various works all relating to Lutheran theology. Of special interest is Oswald Schlee’s commentary on Simeon’s Nunc dimittis or Song of Simeon from the Gospel of Luke, verses 29 through 32, printed in Rostock in 1613. It is of the utmost scarcity and we have not been able to trace a single work at auction and OCLC list no copies. Only mentioning of the work we have been able to trace is in Willer's ‘Catalogus Novus nundinarum Autumnalium', the Frankfurt Book Fair catalogue from 1613 (itself a great rarity). Oswald Schlee died on January 4th, 1613 so the present work was most likely his last and published posthumously. Schlee's ouevre is centered on “Trostschriften” (consolatory writings) and “Leichpredigten” (funeral sermons) dealing with themes of death, mourning, and Christian consolation. This present work, a biblical canticle expressing a devout man’s readiness for death after seeing the Messiah, is a fine concluding and representative work of Schlee's authorship. Oswald Schlee (1553 - 1613) was a German Lutheran clergyman and theologian. He began his studies at the University of Rostock in 1568 and around 1572 at the University of Jena under Justus Lipsius. In 1579, he earned his Master of Philosophy degree in Rostock. From 1577 to 1589, he was a deacon at the St. Peter's Church in Rostock. From 1589, he served at the St. Mary’s Church in Rostock, becoming Archdeacon until 1609, and from 1609 to 1613 he was the pastor and starting in 1610, also the city superintendent.

Randers, Elmenhoff, 1827-29. Indbundet i 12 ensartede lidt senere hldrbd. Rig rygforgyldning, forgyldte skindtitler. New York, Macmillan, 1924. 8vo. In the original cloth with gilt lettering to spine. Minor wear to extremities and hinges a bit weak, otherwise a very fine copy. (blank), X, (1), 394, (blank) pp. First edition of Commons' landmark work, in which he developed his 'theories of the evolution of capitalism and of institutional change as a modifying force alleviating the major defects of capitalism' (New Palgrave). Together with Thorstein Veblen and Wesley Clair Mitchell, Commons was one of the three founders of American Institutionalism.'He sought to demonstrate the importance for economic theory of collective action in all its varieties. These included not only the state but also a host of voluntary associations, such as the corporation and the trade union; in fact, collective action conceptually embraced all institutions, since Commons defined an institution as "collective action in control of individual action"' (IESS)'Although Commons' institutionalism had different emphases from that of Thorstein Veblen, for example, in that Commons stressed reform of the capitalist framework, they shared a view of economics as political economy and of the economy as comprising more than the market' (The New Palgrave, vol.1, p.506).John Rogers Commons (1862-1945) was an institutional economist and labor historian who became a significant contributor to most pieces of social and labor legislation in the 20th century. He was the first American economist and social scientist to dedicate himself to improving labor conditions, believing that labor injustice not only impacted workers, but also the stability of society.

COULOMB, (CHARLES AUGUSTIN) - THE PRIZE-WINNING PAPER ON MAGNETIC COMPASSES INTRODUCING THE TORSION BALANCE
Herman H. J. Lynge & Søn A/S
lyn44921
Paris, Moutard, Panckoucke, 1780. 4to. Extract from "Mémoires fe Mathematique et de Physique, Présentés à l'Academie des Sciences par divers Savans", Tome IX. With titlepage to vol. IX. Pp. (2), (167-) 264 and 4 folded engraved plates. The memoir has also its own titlepage. Fine and clean. Wide-margined. First printing of this monumental memoir (the invention of the TORSION BALANCE) dealing with the best way to construct a magnetic compass. The paper contains the design of a torsion suspension declination compass and the demonstration that the forces of torsion is proportional to the angle of twist. Coulomb received the prize awarded by the Academy for this paper drafted by the Academy in 1777 (he shared the prize with Van Swinden). - "The importance of this memoir for Coulomb's career is that it CONTAINED ELEMENTS OF ALL HIS MAJOR PHYSICAL STUDIES: the quantitative study of magnetism, torsion and the torsion balance, friction and fluid resistance, and the germ of his theories of elasticity and magnetism."(DSB)."Coulomb’s first writings on torsion were presented in his Academy prize-winning memoir of 1777, "Recherches sur la meilleure maniere de fabriquer les aiguilles aimantées."......... his simple, elegant solution to the problem of torsion in cylinders and his use of the torsion balance in physical applications were important to numerous physicists in succeeding years. In chapter 3, Coulomb developed the theory of torsion in thin silk and hair threads. Here he was the first to show how the torsion suspension could provide physicists with a method of accurately measuring extremely small forces. He showed that within certain angular limits, torsional oscillation consisted of simple harmonic motion. He examined the parameters relating the angle of twist to the length, diameter, and elastic properties of the torsion thread. In the range of simple harmonic oscillation Coulomb demonstrated that the force of torsion was proportional to the angle of twist. He used this principle in measuring small magnetic forces and also called attention to its use in measuring other forces, notably those of fluids in motion. Eventually he was able to measure forces of less than 9 x 10-4 dynes.""Coulomb’s major memoirs in electricity and magnetism are his 1777 memoir on magnetic compasses, the famous series of seven electricity and magnetism memoirs read at the Academy from 1785 to 1791, and several magnetism memoirs prepared after the French Revolution. In his electrical studies Coulomb determined the quantitative force law, gave the notion of electrical mass, and studied charge leakage and the surface distribution of charge on conducting bodies. In magnetism he determined the quantitative force law, created a theory of magnetism based on molecular polarization, and introduced the idea of demagnetization (basically, that combinations of magnetic poles can "cancel" each other)."(DSB).Parkinson "Breakthroughs": 1777:P

ABEL, NIELS HENRIK. - "A MONUMENT MORE LASTING THAN BRONCE" (LEGENDRE).

Paris, Académie des Sciences, 1841 (submitted 1826). 4to. (257x197mm). Extract from: 'Mém. Acad. d. Sciences de Paris', 1841, pp.176-264. Contemporary half calf with gilt spine lettering. Spine with a little wear. Some light brown spotting throughout. Otherwise fine and clean. Very scarce first edition of Abel's main paper, in which he first presented his theorem for elliptic integrals - Abel's theorem. "After studying at Christiania and Copenhagen, Abel received a scholarship that permitted him to travel. In Paris he was presented to Legendre, Laplace, Cauchy, and Lacroix, but they ignored him. ... Abel knew the work of Euler, Lagrange, and Legendre on elliptic integrals and may have gotten suggestions for the work he undertook from remarks made by Gauss, especially in his 'Disquisitiones Arithmeticae'. He himself started to write papers in 1825. He presented his major paper on integrals to the Academy of Sciences in Paris on October 30, 1926, for publication in its journal. This paper, [the offered item], contained Abel's great theorem. Fourier, the secretary of the Academy at the time, read the introduction to the paper and then referred the paper to Legendre and Cauchy for evaluation, the latter being chiefly responsible. The paper was long and difficult, only because it contained many new ideas. Cauchy laid it aside to favor his own work. Legendre forgot about it. After Abel's death, when his fame was established, the Academy searched for the paper, found it, and published it in 1841. ... Because Abel's main paper of 1826 was not published until 1841, other authors, learning the more limited theorems published in between these dates, obtained independently many of Abel's 1826 results." (Kline: Mathematical Thought from Ancient to Modern Times, pp.644-55). Sotheran: Bibliotheca Chemico-Mathematics, Third Supplement, describes this paper as "very scarce".

MARX, KARL.
Herman H. J. Lynge & Søn A/S
lyn55207
København, (Copenhagen), 1885-87. 4to. In contemporary half cloth with gilt lettering to spine. Even browning as usual, due to the paper quality. An envelope pasted on to front free end-paper containing Danish articles on Marx. Previous owner's name to title-pages. A fine and clean copy with both half-titles present ("Socialistisk Bibliotek" Vol. IV-V). Vol 1: (2), 473, (1); Vol 2: VII; (1); (4), 363, (1) pp. First edition of the first Danish translation of "Das Kapital". The translation is remarkable in several respects - the Danish Social-democratic party was one of the first labour organizations in the world to publish the two volumes of "The Capital", the translation of the first volume preceded both the English and the Italian, and the translation of the second volume is the second in the world to appear, only preceded by the Russian from 1885 - furthermore, these two translations were the only two to appear of volume two until after Engels' death in 1895. After having been in a serious crisis at the end of the 1870'ies, the labour movement in Denmark turned things around in the 1880'ies, primarily with the aid of Marx. Marx' theories and his connection between theoretical and practical politics became the foundation for the Social Democrats. In 1884, the Danish Social Democratic Party got its two first members of parliament elected, and many workers wished to become politically active. Also in Denmark, the class struggle had properly begun. As Marx was the foundation for the beginning success of the Social Democrats, the Party decided that it would translate and publish all the most important works by Marx - of course most importantly "The Capital". This translation was to become "a new and powerful weapon for the Danish Labour Party in the agitation for the socialist principles". The translation of "The Capital" was made by the linguist and journalist Hans Vilhelm Lund (1840-1893), who worked at the paper Social-Demokraten in the 1880'ies and 90'ies. The translation is famed for being extremely true to the original and virtually flawless. In order to reach as wide a relevant audience as possible, the price was kept as low as it could be. It still constituted a full day's wages for a skilled worker, namely 2 kroner - still about 1/7 of the German edition. In spite of all the efforts to distribute the translation, it did not become a bestseller, and in 1911, the remainders were issued with a new title-page in 1911. (PMM 359 - first edition).

FUMEE, MARTIN.

Paris, Sonnius, 1594. 8vo. In contemporay vellum with yapp edges with title in contemporary hand to spine. Light soiling to extremities and a small tear to the vellum on the spine. Small worm-tract affecting last two leaves, otherwise a fine copy. (4), 369, (26) ff. Exceedingly rare first edition of Fumée’s work on the Hungarian history from the Battle of Mohács and the death of Louis II in 1526 up until the truce between the Holy Roman Emperor Rudolph II and the Ottoman sultan Murad III.The present work not only presented a narrative history of the sixteenth-century wars in Hungary but also included a geographical description of the region. Fumée explicitly dedicates his history "to you (the French people) and to no other." After vividly portraying the brutality of warfare in Hungary, Fumée urges French readers to contemplate the destructive nature of war. He prompts them to reflect, stating, "When you see the ruins and great desolations of a beautiful and rich country, you see your own at present reduced to an identical state." Fumée draws direct parallels between the sufferings of Hungary and France, both seen as enduring divine punishment. In his conclusion, he asserts, "it seems that we are in a worse condition than Hungary is in." Hungary thus serves as a reminder to the French people of the shared hardships stemming from religious disunity, political turmoil, and civil warfare that continued to afflict both kingdoms. 'Martin Fumée, squire of Mary le Chastel, a high-ranking French aristocrat, based his desciption of the battle of Mohács on the work of István Brodarics (1470-1539), De conflictu Hungarorum cum Turcis ad Mohacz, Cracow, 1527, who in the company of the ill-fated Louis II (1506-1526) was eye-witness to the destruction of the Hungarian army by the Ottoman forces in 1526. Fumée's main source for events following the battle was probably Ascanio degli Hortensii' (Horvath p.26).

(London, 1772). 4to. Bound in a fine recent brown hmorocco in old style, gilt back. In: Philosophical Transactions of The Royal Society pp. 147-264 (vol. 62) and 1 folded engraved plate (P.Basire Sc.). A fine large copy, broad margins, printed on good paper, clean and fine throughout. First edition of this important tract, which marked an epoch in the history of chemistry. As it is Priestley's first extensive work on Gases, it foreshadowed his identification of Oxygen."The paper here, for which the Royal Society awarded Priestley the Copley medal announced the discovery of hydrochloric acid and nitric oxide and the use of the latter in measuring the purity of air, which led through the work of Cavendish, Fontana and others to exact eudiometry. Priestley also observed that plants consume carbon dioxide and gave out oxygen, thereby purifying air which has been vitiated by combustion, respiration and putrefaction, and that this action takes place only under daylight." (Printing and the Mind of Man No. 217)."In this paper he also announced two new gases that he had obtained - nitrous oxide and carbonic oxide; these won him the Royal Society's Copley medal. Two years later his experiments in heating red oxide of mercury produced "dephlogisticated air" which was announced in 1775 and identified by Lavoisier as oxygen." (Dibner Heralds of Science No. 40).The work contains a proposal to saturate water with carbonic acid under either atmospheric or increased pressure, which led to the creation of the mineral-water industry. The Centenary of the discovery of oxygen was celebrated at Priestley's American home at Northumberland, Pennsylvania, and was followed in 1876 by the foundation of the American Chemical Society. LE CLERC (LECLERC), SEB. (SEBASTIEN) - AN IMPORTANT WORK ON THE PHYSIOLOGY OF VISION DISCOVERING THE "MASTER-EYE".

Paris, Thomas Jolly, 1679. Small8vo. (15x9 cm.). Contemp. full sprinckled calf., raisedbands, richly gilt spine. Top of spine a bit worn. Edges of covers gilt. (12),86,(1) pp. Last page "Extrait du Privilege du Roy". 34 fine full-page engravings (25 copper-engraved a. 9 in woodcut). A paperflw at foot of titlepage neathly repaired, no loss of paper or letters. Internally clean and fine, printed on thick, good paper. Extremely scarce first edition of Leclerc's important work on binocular vision in which he finds that one of the eyes has a dominant status, thus announcing the discovery of the "Master-eye" - a discovery of outmost importance in the theory of shooting and elsewhere. With use of diagrams he shows that "things that can be seen clearly are seen with but one single eye.". He records and depicts a large series of experiments with binocular vision and shows geometrically the relation to the science of perspective, and points out the importance of understanding the physiology of binocular vision for perspective painting in general.Sebastien Leclerc was originally an engraver who studied physics and geometry in relation to perspective theory, a field of which he became famous. In 1672 he was appointed to "l'Academie de Peinture" as professor in perspective. He was also engraver to Louis XIV and was appointed professor at "l'Ecole des Gobelins".

Stockholm, Almqvist & Wiksell, 1926. [To be distributed by Gustav Jena Fischer, etc.]. Folio. Original full cloth with gilt title to spine and brown lettering and swedish arms to front board. Gilding to spine a little worn and spine a little soiled. Inner front hinge weak. Internally very nice and clean. Stamp to title-page (Malmö stadsbibliotek). An unusually well preserved copy of this heavy, large book. XIVpp., frontispiece portrait, (1 blank leaf), 182 pp. + 5 plates, 4 of them maps. + Supplement (including tables, explanation of the tables and the plates, and plates): (1) f. (half-title), 108 pp. (1) f. (half-title) + 44 photographic plates depicting Nordic Types, Baltic types, and Lapp types. With many illustrations, maps, and diagrams in the text as well. Scarce first edition of this seminal production, which constitutes the first - and most significant - production of the first state institute for race biology in the world. "It is one of the great paradoxes of the history of eugenics that the category of "race" - notoriously fuzzy anyway - was no less important to the eugenic ideas and practices developing within states that experienced little actual racial diversity. In the Swedish context, racial biology and anthropology thus exercised considerable influence, especially in the first decades of the twentieth century, when eugenicists promoted the idea of a distinct Nordic race, as Broberg and Tydén have established. The first state Institute for Race Biology in the world was founded in Uppsala in 1922, having been voted by the Swedish parliament and ratified by the king. Directed by Herman Lundborg (1868-1943), Sweden's most prominent eugenic scientist at the time, one of its first tasks was mapping the racial features of the Swedish nation. On the basis of measuring the physical attributes of 100,000 Swedes - two-thirds of whom were army recruits and a significant part of the remainder, prison inmates - "The Racial Chararcter of the Swedish Nation" appeared in 1926 to international acclaim."Thus started the first officially planned scientific state strategy to map out the superior Nordic race, to promote and improve racial purity and to depict the dangers of miscegenation. After this first (massive) production, more attempts to produce full inventories of "foreign" races were done in the 1930'ies, during which time institutes for eugenic research and promotion were also established in Central America and Africa, due to the efforts of Lundborg, in collaboration with Samuel Holmes and Charles Davenport. The scientific mapping of the ideal pure race, with the ultimate goal of preparing and initiating practical reforms to improve the white race, found, as we all know too well, great resonance all over Europe, in the 30'ies and 40'ies. With the present work, Lundborg had founded what was considered an important scientific and patriotic task that came to have the greatest of consequences for the peoples of Europe.

Amsterdam, Honoré et Chatelain, 1721-1720-1721. Bound in three later, uniform blue half morocco bindings with gilt spines. Light brownspotting throughout, but a nice copy, complete with all three frontispieces, three maps and 18 plates. First edition - reissue of the first volume and first issue of volumes two and three - of the first French translation of one of the most important literary works ever written. "Robinson Crusoe" marks the beginning of realistic fiction as a literary genre and is widely recognized as the first English novel. Originally published in English in 1719, the work was seen through no less than four editions before the end of its first year and went on to become one of the most widely published books in history, spawning so many imitations, not only in literature but also in film, television and radio, that its name is used to define an entire genre - the Robinsonade. By the end of the 19th century, no book in the history of Western literature had more editions, spin-offs and translations than "Robinson Crusoe", with more than 700 alternative versions of it, the French translation being among the very first. It's influence in literature is almost unparalleled.

Kopenhagen, Möller, 1774-78. 4to. 2 vols. A well-preserved copy with wide margins, printed on strong paper with red edges, bound in contemporary full marbled leather, richly gilt on the spines. With two engraved vignettes, 124 copperplates (partly folded or double), and one large folded map. XVI, (6), 505; (16), 479 pp. First edition. This pioneering work by the Danish orientalist Carsten Niebuhr (1733–1815) remains one of the most important sources of knowledge on Arabia. It includes views, portraits of local people, scenes from daily life, as well as depictions of antiquities, Egyptian hieroglyphs, Syrian cuneiform inscriptions, idols, and more. Of the five scientists sent by the Danish government on the expedition, initiated by J. H. E. Bernstorff, Niebuhr was the sole survivor to return to Denmark; the other four perished during the journey. The title vignettes were engraved by J. F. Clemens after drawings by Wiedewelt. Most of the engravings were based on drawings by Baurenfeind, who died during the expedition, while others were drawn by Niebuhr himself. The plates were engraved by Clemens, the Haas brothers, C. Defehrt, C. Martin, and others. Birkelund 141.
