(Publisher:) "Steven Holl was born in 1947 and graduated in architecture from the University of Washington; he completed his training in Italy (1970) and at the Architectural Association School in London (1976). His numerous books include - Anchoring (New York, 1989), Intertwining (New York, 1996) and Written in Water (Basel, 2002). They embody his contribution to discussion of the current significance of architectural practice. Since 1976 he has run the studio that bears his name in New York, and in the last fifteen years he has emerged as one of the leading figures in international architecture. He has completed buildings in the United States, Europe and Japan, and his projects have been exhibited in collective and personal shows (at the MoMA in New York, Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, the Basilica Palladiana in Vicenza, and many others). In this book, Kenneth Frampton presents Holl's built and projected works, interprets their range of significance and analyses, as he puts it, 'their premises and phenomenological intentions' In addition to Frampton's study, the book contains four chapters dedicated respectively to 'Edge of a City' - urban projects and territorial studies; 'Housing' - community housing, including the now celebrated Residence for students of MIT in Cambridge, Massachusetts, completed in 2002; 'Institutions', buildings designed or built to house public institutions such as museums, libraries, universities and similar facilities; 'Houses' - villas and houses, including the well-known Y House in the Catskill Mountains".
