"Flower still lifes in the Golden Age", in Dutch, richly illustrated. - - - In the 1630s, tulip speculation, tulipomania, reached its peak. The most sought-after tulip bulbs cost more at auction than the most expensive house in Amsterdam. At the same time, flower still lifes were painted all over the country, which were sold as substitutes for real tulips. This magnificent publication reveals the origins and growth of a genre that has not been sufficiently studied up to now. Paul Taylor begins with a description of tulipomania and its effect on the general opinion of flower still lifes. He then discusses the religious messages that these paintings can contain. Flowers were described as symbols of moral messages from God; some flower still lifes were intended to point out to the viewer the transience of earthly existence. However, flower still lifes were not only bought as a substitute for luxury objects or because of their morals. They were also loved because of the mastery of the artist, who created a balance between illusion, composition and colour harmony. Taylor analyses art theory writings from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries to understand how artists and connoisseurs responded to floral still lifes. He draws conclusions from the analysis of the paintings themselves, from research into the development and refinement of the genre. "Floral Still Lifes in the Golden Age" is a compelling study of a genre in which Dutch painters excelled par excellence.
