Contemporary marbled calf with richly gilt spine, * Turenne (1611-75) was a main character in the bloody wars of the 17th century, being the greatest genius of warfare of the period and one of the best in this trade in the history of mankind. He joined the Dutch army at the age of 14, and changed sides numerous times in the turmoil of the Thirty Years' War and the period after. Of course he was killed by a cannon ball.
