Marklund Övre Norrland i litteraturen 1402. Daniel Ehrenfried Gravallius (1777-1849) prästvigdes 1803 och deltog som bataljonspredikant i fälttågen 1809 och 1813. Hans fälttågsminnen har karaktäriserats som ett slags pastisch på Wallenbergs ”Min son på galejan”. Gravallius verkade vid sidan om sin prästgärning som satirisk poet och teologisk skriftställare under nära 50 år. Han debuterade 1802 med ”Promenad-läsning” och erhöll samma år ”mention” av Svenska akademien för sitt skaldestycke ”Religionen”.

Efter sina resor blev han bibliotekarie hos hertig Fredrik av Holstein i Gottorp, där han dog. Här finns ”mycken onödig lärdom” tyckte Warmholtz.

Öns naturalhistoria upptar två tredjedelar av texten, med en rik beskrivning av bl.a. insektsfloran, men beskrivningen innehåller även anekdoter och folkloristik om allmogens vidskeplighet m.m. Den blev en stor framgång när den utkom 1828. Gunnar Brusewitz frågar sig (i Björnjägare och fjärilsmålare) retoriskt om ”...någon författare kommit närmare det linneanska idealet för en topografisk skildring än pastorn på Mörkö”. Den handkolorerade planschen föreställer ett par i sockendräkt.
