First French edition, with the rare extra appendix ”Relation en forme de factum” (15 pp.) about the printing of the work, which according to Bring lacks in all Swedish libraries. Aubrey de La Motraye spent twenty-six years travelling through northern Europe to Tartary and the Levant, beginning with a tour through Sweden in 1696, visiting Gothenburg, Skara, Trollhättan, Stockholm, Falun, Lappland etc. He was close to Charles XII of Sweden and, during his tour in Turkey, visited him at Bender. A number of the plates in this work are signed by Hogarth; they illustrate antiquities and genre scenes of Swedish and Turkish life, with dancing dervishes and harems. His travel accunt was first printed in English in London in 1723. This French edition contains four plates which do not appear in the English edition. His travels in Germany, Russia, Poland etc., was published in a separate work in 1732. The first Swedish translation was published by Hugo Hultenberg in 1918.From the library of Isabella Charlotte de Rohan, vicomte de Chabot (1784-1868). She was an Irish aristocrat and diarist, born Isabella Charlotte FitzGerald. She married Louis William de Rohan-Chabot an exiled french officer living in London. After many adventures the couple returned to France and Paris after the defeat of Napoleon. There she took her duties as a lady-in-waiting to the duchesse d'Orléans and living at the Château de Villiers and the Palais-Royal.

Limited editon of 750 numbered copies, of which this is nr 59, issued a day before the trade edition. Inserted is the Lawrence of Arabia Memorial pamphlet. (4) pp. O’Brien A041. This edition published at July 29, 1935 and the trade edition at July 30. This limited edition contains three extra facsimiles, not present in the trade edition, and four plates in colour, black and white in the other. This copy has also the frontispice portrait, which O’Brian does not mention to the limited edition. This is the third edition, but the first public. The book was first printed for friends in 1922 and to subscribers in 1926.

Nissen 395. The most extensive collection of mycological colour-illustrations until the publication of Bresadola’s ”Iconographia mycologica”. The illustrations were partly drawn by Cooke from nature and partly after originals by Berkeley, Broome, W. G. Smith and Massee. The plates are renumbered by hand as per the instrucions of the author, and the plate that is lacking is number 1138.

Contains the history of the Dutch East Indian Company with the lives of all 28 Dutch Governors-General arranged chronologically from Pieter Both, appointed in 1609, to Jacob Mossel, appointed in 1752, as well as information on the Dutch East Indies and other Dutch colonies such as Ceylon, Formosa, Australia and the Cape of Good Hope. The maps and plans are by the artist and engraver Jacobus van der Schley (1715-79) who was a pupil of Bernard Picart. One engraving with ”Pater Noster” in Sinhalese text. Views of a.o. Nagasaki, Deshina, Batavia, Ternate, Galle, Malacca and maps of Java, Australia, Ceylon, Cape of Good Hope, Bali. Johann Peter Isaak Du Bois was private secretary to the Polish and Saxonian embassy to Holland. Gustaaf Willem van Imhoff (1705-1750) was a former Goveneur general to Dutch East India.The family Sehestedt Juel was in the possesion of the medieval estate Ravnholt since the 18th-century.

Fine copy of the first edition of Savigny’s monumental ”System des heutigen Römischen Rechts”, which is a work about the contemporary Roman law in Germany, and one of his most important. It is here complete with the sometimes missing Index volume published by O. L. Heuser in 1851. The German jurist Friedrich Carl von Savigny (1779-1861) is the most important member of the influential ”Historic School of Jurists”, which influenced by romanticism reacted against the natural law theories of the Enlightenment and claimed that national laws must be based on specific national cultural backgrounds and civilisations, an organic development of the Volkgeist. In this work which deals with the history of the sources, the literature and the teaching of Roman law from the fifth through the fifteenth centuries Savigny transcended Roman law in many respects, adapting it to modern requirements or developing new solutions, many of which have become influential in German and other legal science. And also ”... it initiated the modern study of medieval jurisprudence and has served ever since, corrected in many respects but unequaled, as the standard work on the history of medieval jurisprudence in Europe” (Walter Wilhelm in Enzyclopedia.com.) His influence was large also in Sweden and in the Nordic countries. See Lars Björne ”Brytningstiden” (1998) pp. 229ff.Nils S. von Koch (1801-81) was an influential Swedish liberal jurist and politician, married to Francis Eliza Lewin from England. He was very engaged in the social questions of his time like education, penalty laws and prisons, voting rights etc. Thanks to his wife he also had a broad English network.

Skildring av slaget. I mitten syns en infanteristrid i en skog och i förgrunden, till höger i bild rider tsar Peter med kommandokäpp i handen, åtföljd af generaler och adjutanter. Under bilden rysk text i tre rader. Vid slaget vid byn Lesna segrade Peter den store över Adam Ludwig Lewenhaupts svenska kår som var på väg från Riga till Ukraina med förstärkningar till huvudarmén. Segern fick stor betydelse för den ryska stridsmoralen och utnyttjades också duktigt i den ryska propagandan; slaget kallades senare för ”Poltavaslagets moder”. För Karl XII innebar förlusten att han fick ändra sina planer för det fortsatta fälttåget, och bl.a. avstå från marschen mot Moskva. Den ryske hovmålaren Pierre-Denis Martin le Jeune (1663-1742) målade ett antal stora bataljmålningar över ryska segrar i Nordiska kriget, vilka graverades av bl.a. Charles Simonneau (1645-1728) och Nikolas Martin de Larmessin (1640-1725).

The first work was published anonymously by Festus Hommius (1576-1642), a Dutch Calvinist theologian. The international Synod of Dordrecht held from November 13, 1618 to May 9, 1619 by the Dutch Reformed Church to settle the strong controversy initiated by the rise of Arminianism. Voting representatives from eight foreign Reformed churches were also invited. Among these groups were also Anglican delegates from the Church of England and the Church of Scotland. It it followed by four more anti remonstrant pamphlets, the last is against Johan Van Oldenbarnevelt.

Warmholtz menar att ”boken är ganska sälsynt”. Sturcius eller von Sturtz var enligt Warmholtz livländsk adelsman. Hösten 1598 beredde sig Sigismund för en väpnad aktion mot hertig Karl, och anlitade då professorn i Rostock Kristoffer Sturcius för att under medverkan av Erik Sparre skriva agitationsskriften ”Ausa Caroli”, som innehåller en vederläggning av hertig Karls försvar av Söderköpings riksdagsbeslut. ”Conscientia Caroli” är en på tyska avfattad smädesskrift mot hertig Karl som av Warmholtz (3362) betecknas som ”oändeligen sällsynt”. Den bör ha kommit ut omkring 1602 eftersom den nämner polackernas erövring av Wolmar i december 1601. Befälhavare för de svenska trupperna i staden var hertig Karls utomäktenskaplige son Karl Karlsson Gyllenhielm, som tillfångatogs av polackerna – en källa till stor skadeglädje för den anonyme författaren. Bandets proveniens kan på försättsbladet följas bakåt till auktionen efter översten Eric Gyllengrip (1667-1736) i februari 1737, där det gick för 80 daler. Köpare var herren till Ängsö, Carl Fredrik Piper (1700-70), som använde en del sitt Törnflychtska mödernearv till att bygga upp en berömd boksamling. Ängsöbiblioteket såldes på en auktion i maj 1803, där detta band köptes av bibliotekarien Jacob Björkegren (1752-1825). Vid auktionen efter Björkegren i maj 1826 köptes det av pastor J. A. A. Lüdeke (1772-1838) för 20 riksdaler och 20 skillingar, och vid auktionen efter denne i februari 1840 köptes det av boksamlaren Carl Gustaf d’Albedyhll (1800-56) för 10 riksdaler och 24 skillingar. Den d’Albedhyllska samlingen köptes i april 1843 av Carl Jedvard Bonde på Ericsberg. Det finns fortfarande plats för noteringar om nya ägare på försättsbladet!

Verginelli 22, for an incomplete copy of Balduinus.Later edition of ”De secretis mulierum” (On the secrets of women), an immensly popular work which was published many times during the 15th, 16th, and 17th centuries, sometimes separately and sometimes in compilations such as this, which also contains ”Liber aggregationis” and ”De mirabilibus mundi” as well as ”De secretis naturae” by Michael Scotus. The works attributed to Albertus Magnus were not written by him, but by followers who drew (sometimes faultily) from his work. Suggested authors have been Thomas of Brabant and Henry of Saxony, but they have since been ruled out.Balduinus book is an enlarged version of a tract (Aurum Aurae) originally published in 1673. This edition (including the appendix on the unpaginated thirteen pages at the end, with separate title: ”Phosphorus Hermeticus sive magnes luminaris”.) was also published by Georg Heinrich Fromann in Frankfurt and Leipzig the same year.Balduinus (Christian Adolf Baldewein, 1632-82) was a magistrate in Großenhain in Sachsen. He was a dedicated alchemist and convinced that the ”prime matter” from which the Philosopher’s stone was made was volatile and could only be found in the air. It was when experimenting with this process that he chanced upon the phosphorous substance that came to bear his name (Balduins phosphorous, actually Calcium nitrate). It is this ”light magnet” that is described in the ”Phosphorus Hermeticus”. The main work "deals with the extraction of gold from the air by universal magnetism" (Thorndike VIII, p.381). Also contains a celebratory poem ”Madrigal” by Johann Engelhart.

Något nötta kanter, reva längs ned med förlust av ett ord. Warmholtz 2509. Första upplagan av Johannes Messenius mycket viktiga svenska historieverk, postumt utgiven av Johan Peringskiöld. Här med det nästan alltid saknade porträttet av Messenius, graverad av Truls Arwidsson. Utgiven i 14 delar, numrerade 1 till 15 (nummer 14 utkom aldrig) av planerade 20. De första åtta utgör första delen och de övriga andra. Johannes Messenius (1579-1636) var sin tids mest betydande svenska historiker, med ett tragiskt livsöde. Han blev professor i juridik och politik vid Uppsala universitet 1609. Men efter stridigheter med Johannes Rudbeckius flyttade han sitt eget kollegium till Stockholm och till en tjänst vid kansliet. Stridigheter fortsatte dock, nu med Nils Chesnecopherus och Erik Jöransson Tegel, och år 1616 blev han dömd till döden för papistiska stämplingar, vilket dock mildrades till livstids deportation till Kajaneborgs fästning i Finland. Där bodde han sedan i tjugo år (år 1635 mildrades dock straffet till förvisning till Österbotten, och han bosatte sig i Uleåborg), och där skrev han detta sitt livsverk, Scondia illustrata. Detta verk bildade epok. Han införde en viss kritik mot Johannes Magnus och dennes sagohistoria, men framförallt använde han sig av mycket arkivmaterial i sin medeltida del, och behandlade detta kritiskt, och för den äldre historien förde han in ett helt nytt källmaterial, den isländska sagokretsen. Det sistnämnda, inte minst historien om Oden-Othinus som vandrade till Sverige från Troja och grundade Uppsala, fick för den efterföljande svenska historieskrivningen en stor betydelse, ända fram till E. G. Geijer. Eric Johannes Schroderus (1609-39) fick efter sin magisterpromotion 1635 order av förmyndarregeringen att besöka Messenius i Uleåborg och skaffa information om arbetet med Scondia illustrata. Han anlände i januari 1636 och stannade till Messenius död i november samma år. Han rapporterade regelbundet hem och skickade avskrifter ur arbetet. Dessa brev finns dock ej bevarade. Efter återkomsten till Stockholm, lämnade Schroderus den 11 december in sin slutrapport, ”Relation om D. Johannis Messenii Scondia illustrata”. Denna finns bevarad i sammanlagt 4 avskrifter, tre på KB och en i UB. Rapporten sammanfattar kort innehåller i de 20 banden, av vilka han hunnit läsa tio. Avskriften som återfinns här innehåller sammanfattningen av delarna 14 och 16-20, dvs de som ej blev tryckta.

Goldschmidt, Medieval texts and their first appearance in print, p. 70. First printing, editio princeps, of the hexameter poem ”Vita divi Germani” written in the 9th century by the French benedictine theologian and writer Heiric (Hericus) of Auxerre (841–876). It’s a poem on the life of St. Germanus of Auxerre, or Saint Germain l'Auxerrois, (c.378–c.448 AD), bishop of Auxerre, and famous for his visits to Britain and the struggles with Pelagianism. The text is edited by Pierre Pesselier. ”One of the greatest monuments of Carolingian poetry is the Vita divi Germani, composed in hexameters by Heric d’Auxerre in 873. Its first printed edition is one of Simon de Colines’s gracefully printed octavos, Paris 1543, and Heric’s epic is edited by Piere Pesselier with a preface in which he stresses the antiquity of the manuscript he has transcribed and the historical value of the poem.” (Goldschmidt). From the large library of the great bibliophile and one of the founder of the Roxburghe club Richard Heber (1773-1833). At his death his collection in England was estimated by Dibdin at 105.000 volumes. They were sold at Sothebys during the years 1834-37 with printed catalogues.

O. Adelborg ritade och etsade dessa planscher. Enligt SBL skall dock etsningarna vara utförda av J. P. Cumelin efter Adelborgs teckningar. På begäran av hans svärmor S. L. Ramsay avstod Adelborg mot en summa av 3000 r:dr b:co från publicering av karikatyrerna, och samtliga exemplar utom åtta skall ha förstörts. Vid sidan av dessa åtta som han delade ut cirkulerade även ett flertal handritade kopior. Per Otto Adelborg (1781-1818), född i Lovisa i Finland, var överstelöjtnant, målare och etsare. Han deltog i finska kriget 1808-09 och verkade efter revolutionen som vakthavande på Gripsholm under Gustav IV Adolfs fångenskap. Senare deltog han även i fälttåget i Norge 1814. Han är farfar till Ottilia Adelborg. På försättsbladet står med blyerts ”Tecknade af D. R. Brunow”, vilket ju återkommer i ryggtiteln. Uppgiften att Didrik Reinhold Brunow låg bakom karikatyrerna härrör från en anteckning i UUB:s exemplar. Tidigare har även Almfeldt och Per Nordquist pekats ut som upphovsmän. Bra proveniens. Historieprofessorn Johan Henrik Schröders (1791-1857) bibliotek, ”fullt af gamla sällsynta svenska böcker”, såldes på bokauktion i Uppsala efter tryckt förteckning. Enligt Henrik Klemming rådde auktionsdagen sådan snöyra i Uppsala att många, både anbud och spekulanter, inte kunde komma fram till auktionen i tid. Böckerna såldes också ofta billigt. En av de största köparna på den auktionen var Carl Jedvard Bonde.

Första svenska upplagan av Söderkompaniets oktroj, även utgiven på tyska samma år och holländska året därpå. Willem Usselinx (1537-1647) var en av grundarna av det holländska Västindiska kompaniet och fick av Gustav II Adolf uppdraget att bilda ett svenskt handelsbolag, med handel på Afrika och Västindien. Framgångarna uteblev dock. Ur detta utvecklades dock idén till skapandet av en koloni i Amerika, det som skulle bli Nya Sverige. Detta genomfördes 1637 av Usselinxs vän Peter Minuit.

Med den extra planschen nummer 10, vilket ger 94 planscher. Detta är den illustrerade praktupplagan de svenska svamparna. De fina planscherna är huvudsakligen efter teckningar av Elias Pettersson och Petter Åkerlund. Svampbeskrivningarna hade tidigare publicerats i ”Monographia hymenomycetum Sueciae, (1857-63) och de praktiska detaljerna delvis i ”Anteckningar öfver de i Sverige växande ätliga svampar” (1836). Även i detta verk justerar dock Fries detaljer i sina släkt- och artnamn. Till skillnad från de tidigare mykologiskt rent vetenskapliga verken hade detta stora arbete även en folkbildande praktisk funktion, att höja medvetenheten om svamparnas användning och värde. Här omtalas var man äter svamp, giftsvampar, svampars beståndsdelar, insamlingsråd, uppväxt och fortplantning m.m. Verket fick en enastående verkan och blev starten för en snabbt växande svensk populärmykologi, och det följdes snabbt av billigare och enklare verk med färgillustrationer av svampar, av mykologer som J. W. Smitt och N. J. Andersson. Elias Fries (1794-1878) från Femsjön i Småland, ofta kallad ”mykologins fader”, blev snabt ett världsnamn inom botaniken och framförallt inom mykologin. Hans stora genombrott, ”Systema mycologicum”, började utges redan 1821. Hans världsrykte stärktes genom verk som ”Epicris systematis mycologici” (1836-38), ”Hymenomycetus Europaei” (1838) m.fl. Han främsta insatser låg inom systematiken och beskrivningen av svamparna. Han tillhörde dock den romantiska naturuppfattningens så hans indelning i klasser och underklasser är numera obsolet, men ”...his distinction of different spore colors still has important taxonomic value, and he is especially remembered for his ability to describe species.” (DSB).

Several earlier collections have had the title ”Corpus juris militaris”. The first edition by Schulze was published in 1687 (revised 1693 and 1700) with the subtitle: ”... Insonderheit Das Churfürstl. Brandenburgische vormahls mit des weyland Herrn Eberhard Hoyers notis versehen”, also published as ”Corpus Iuris Militaris Brandenburgicum”. This ”Swedish edition” is a reprint, probably almost a titel-ausgabe, of the Berlin 1700 edition because it does not contain any extra Swedish material apart from the title page and a preface. The anonymous editor have copied the preface by Schulze from the 1687-edition but changed the beginning of the last paragraph from ”Und dieses hat nach distrahirten Exemplarien unsers Chur-Brandenburgischen Kriegs-Rechts, unter andern den hiesigen Buchführer Robert Völcker bewogen,...” to ”Und dieses hat den Verleger bewogen, nicht allein die Schwedische Kriegs-Articul wieder aufs neue zu Verlegen,...” Both prefaces are present here.

First edition of Philipp Clüver’s (1580-1622) large work on Germania and the Germans in antiquity. For this work, which goes far beyond a topographical description of ancient Europe, Clüver (or Cluverius) was awarded the 'Geographus Academicus' and became professor at the university of Leyden. A second edition was published in 1631. It begins with a poem to Clüver by Daniel Heinsius followed by Tacitus’ ”Liber de Germania” in Lipsius’ textedition. From a Swedish point of view, Georg Stiernhielm wrote “Anticluverius”, published in Stockholm by Hadorph in 1685, against it and its thesis that the origin of the Goths was to be found - not in Sweden - but in northern Germany.

I förordet til Björköarätten skriver Johan Hadoph om den gamla handelsstaden Birka och illustrationen på sidan (8) visar de fornföremål som Hadorph hittade vid sitt besök på Björkö på 1680-talet. Det är således de första illlustrationerna på fornfynd från Birka! Ett liknande samlingsband återfinns i katalogen över Carl Gustaf Eichstedt d’Albedyhlls samling, vilket köptes i sin helhet av Carl Jedvard Bonde, med nummer Folio 91, och kommer då från Gustaf d’Albedyhll.

Carl Didric Ehrenpreus (1692-1760) var jurist, riksråd och kansler för Uppsala akademi (deltog i sin ungdom även i kalabaliken i Bender), och var både en stor boksamlare och viktig myntsamlare. Myntsamlingen sålde han till Uppsala akademi och bildar grunden till den stora samlingen i Uppsala. Hans boksamling såldes i Stockholm efter tryckt förteckning 1761. Där framgår att dessa 20 delar var de han hade.

Boken består av tre delar med två extra titelblad, ”Ein Dialogus oder Gespräch, zwichen dem Gelt und der Armut, sehr Kurtzweilig zulesen” och ”Ein kurtzer Extract der Müntzsorten, deren im Alten und Newen testament gedacht wirdt, [...]”. Svenska mynt behandlas på blad 71. Friherre Göran von Knorring (1691-1773) från Strömsberg i Jönköping var assessor från 1721 och blev hovrättsråd 1733. Han gifte sig 1720 med Gertrud Tham från Göteborg. Pastorn vid tyska församlingen i Göteborg Georg Friedrich Niehenck (1680-1752) ägde en stor myntsamling, vilken efter hans död förgäves erbjöds åt museer i Stockholm och Uppsala för 20000 daler. Den såldes istället på auktion i Hamburg 1759. Hans ansenliga bibliotek såldes efter hans död på auktion i Göteborg 1753. Ekebom har dock daterat sin anteckning 22 år senare, vilket tyder på att där kan ha funnits ytterligare en ägare mellan.

Giacomo Bresadola (1847-1929) Italian priest and accomplished mycologist, author of 1017 species of mushrooms and about fifteen genera. One of his specialities was exotic species, and he published several studies of mushroom specimens from around the world. His collections are today conserved in various institutions of which The Natural History Museum of Stockholm has the largest part (some thirty thousand species). Smaller parts of Bresadola's collection can be found in the Universities of Washington, Trent, Uppsala, Leiden and Paris. Bresadola published several books with mycological illustrations such as this one, the monumental partially posthumous 26 volume ”Iconographia mycologica”.

Renouard, Bibliotheque d'un Amateur, 1819, vol. 4, Histoire p. 103. ”The Renouard-Gosford-Derby-copy”, one of the few copies of the largest of the three sizes of paper. ”Exemplaire sur le plus grand des hors papiers qui ont été trés de cette Edition” (Renouard).Sold as number 1405 in the ”Catalogue of a Distinguished Portion of the Choice, Curious and Splendid Library of Monsieur Renouard” 1834, and bought by the famous firm of Payne and Foss. They played a prominent part in building great English libraries in the begining of the 19th century, and among their clients was also Archibald Acheson, the third Earl of Gosford (1806-64). He built a large and according to De Ricci extremely beautiful library at the Gosford Castle in Ireland. His library was sold in 1878 to the London Bookseller James Toovey. But this copy must have passed on earlier to the 14th Earl of Derby, Edward George Geoffrey Smith-Stanley (1799–1869), who was an English statesman, Chief Secretary for Ireland a period, three times First Lord of the Treasury, Chancellor of Oxford University etc. The library of the Earls of Derby at Knowsley was largely sold by auction at Christies in four sales in 1953 and 1954. It was at the sale probably bought by an antiquarian bookseller from whose catalogue Bengt Lassen bought it.The second and best of the two Pitiscus’ editions of Suetonius. The first was published in 8vo in 1690. Samuel Pitiscus gives in his commentaries extracts from nearly 900 ancient and modern authors, and among the three indexes there is an Index editionum. The edition also contains ”Monumentum Ancyranum”, with comments by Casaubon and Johannes Gronovius. Samuel Pitiscus (1637-1727), nephew of the famous Bartholomaeus Pitiscus, was a Dutch historian and classicist from Zutphen. He studied theology in Deventer and was later appointed headmaster of the Latin school in Zutphen. Bengt Lassen (1908-74) var hovrättsråd och åren 1953-73 VD för Norstedts förlag. Han var en duktig latinist och hade en fin samling romerska författare. Han figurerar i bakgrunden i Maria Langs deckare ”Mördarens bok”.
