RASK, RASMUS.

Kolombo (Colombo, Sri Lanka), 1821. 8vo. Original blank blue wrappers. Some brownspotting (due to the paper quality). (2),16 pp. First (and only) edition of the first Singalese grammar in a Western language, Rask's highly importent work, in which he "identified Sinhalese as a speech belonging to the same class as Sanskrit and added that Tamil belonged to quite a different class. Since then the subject has been studied and discusses by various scholars, and it is established beyond doubt that Sinhalese is an Indo-Aryan language."Rasmus Rask is one of the absolutely most prominent and famous Danish philologers and is very well esteemed worldwide. He was the first to systematically study the ancient Nordic languages and is the discoverer of the relations between the consonants in the Indo-European languages. This discovery served as the foundation of the rules Jacob Grimm later formulated, underlying the Germanic and High-German soundshifts. In PMM, Rask is identified as "one of the founders of the modern science of language." (PMM 266).

Paris, Baudouin, An 6 (1798). 8vo. Nice cont. full mottled calf. Richly gilt back. Light wear to lower part of back and a small hole in leather at lower hinge. Red leather titlelabel. XVI,710 pp. and 14 engraved plates with many figs. A large clean copy. First edition of Cuvier's first work on comparative zoology, in which he showed the affinities in structure between present forms of animals, researches which resulted in comparison with older forms and thereby for other theorists suggested evolutionary lines and links. Cuvier is considered as the founder of modern palaeontology by this and his later published work "Recherches sur les ossemens fossiles..."Cuvier's first separate work, "Tableau..." (1798), is based on a course of lectures he had delivered at l'Ecole du Pantheon. It was the first general statement of his natural classification of the animal kingdom...He establishd the four great classes (vertebrates, molluscs, articulates, and radiates) and classified the animals according to the anatomical structure." (Milestone of Science No. 44). - Wood p. 307.

Boston, Ticknor and Fields, 1866. Orig. Red-brown full cloth w. gilt ornamented title to front board and back. Capitals worn, bdg. w. some soiling. Internally occational brownspotting. W. the frontispiece-portrait of Whittier and woodcut title-vignette. Old owner's name on front free end-paper ("Minne Brockett/ 1866/ New Haven"). First edition, first issue w. the page number at the foot of page 52 (dropped in the second issue). Whittier's most famous book and a main work of 19th century American litterature. John Greenlef Whittier (1807-1892) was a highly estimeted Quaker poet, in the honour of whom several New England states had holidays, and after whom the State Whittier, California is named. He was a forceful antislavery crusader, who fought hard for the abolition of slavery in America, and he was immensely popular in his lifetime. The first issue is quite scarce. "No poem has ever been read aloud with greater appreciation around the fireplace than this simple sincere photographic depiction of a country New England family and New England household life of the first half of the nineteenth century. Few lines have afforded more solace in time than the passage on p. 21 beginning: "Alas for him who never sees/ The stars shine through his cypress trees!". (One Hundred Influential American Books Printed before 1900 No. 73).

Olja på träpannå. Signerad i bläck a tergo: "A. Odaterad, men troligen utförd 1821. 30,5 × 27,5 cm. Inramad.

(4) s. Gott skick. Zetterlund I:121.

Bibl. danica III, sp. 59. Zeeberg 168. Thesaurus 201 not. Carlander II, 176.

Interesting collection of ten english tracts printed 1712-1714, some of them relating to The Deist Controversy and several of them rare. Philosopher Anthony Collins (1676-1729) was a friend of John Locke and his influential Discourse of Freethinking is here in it's first edition, the repaired title page should be noted, but is neatly done and in a contemporary hand. The work of antiquary John Pointer (1668-1754) on the Roman pavement in Stonesfield, with the plate depicting Bacchus, is of importance as the pavement was destroyed already in 1724. Bookseller and author of many curious titles John Dunton (1659-1733) is perhaps best known as founder of The Athenian Society in 1691 and as publisher of the periodical The Athenian Mercury. Michael Lilienthal (1686-1750) was a german theologian, librarian, numismatist, publicist, and professor at the university of Rostock. His bookplate in this sammelband bears also the signature of his son Theodor Christoph Lilienthal (1717-1781).

Er. Cons, inherited by his son J. E. Cons in 1818 and from him given in 1852 to his nephew, captain Ax. Fr. M. Lundeberg. Lundeberg has also recorded the births of his children and their height on the last leaf and rear endpaper. With the bookplate and signature of Gunnar Brusewitz. Schwerdt Hunting, hawking, shooting I:181. Westwood & Satchell Bibliotheca piscatoria 180. Third edition of this celebrated work on the art of capturing game, fish and vermin with traps, nets and other means, first published in 1660. A second edition was published in 1668, a fourth in 1695, and this edition was reissued in 1700 with a cancel title page. The work is split into five books of which the last deals extensively with fishing. The striking and instructive woodcut illustrations show a variety of nets and traps. The plates are the same as appeared in the first edition. This edition includes for the first time the short 12-page ”Traité tres-utile de la chasse” by Charles Strosse present at the end of the work. This work was to prove immensely popular and influential, inspiring the work of many subsequent authors, notably Liger in his ”Amusements de la campagne”, and who reproduced the first part of ”Les ruses” without alteration, according to Westwood & Satchell. Michael Törnflycht (1683-1738) was a military, civil servant, and country gentleman. Under King Charles XII he took part in the Battle of Poltava 1709 and the siege of Fredrikshall 1718. Carl Fredric Piper (1700-1770) was his nephew and one of Sweden’s foremost book collectors in his time. His extensive library at Ängsö castle was inherited by his son Adolf Ludvig Piper (1750-1795), married to Sophie von Fersen. Forester Johan Cons, or Conz, (1739-1818) was born in Strassbourg and lived in Dyvik by Ängsö. His daughter Hedvig Sophia Cons (1785-1864) was married to the factor at Ängsö Johan Petter Lundeberg. Their son was Axel Fredrik Marcus Lundeberg (1809-1873). Brusewitz’s signature is dated 1975. Laid in is also a catalogue clipping from Hagelin Rare Books, where Brusewitz bought this book.

Paris, Massin, (1932). 32x42. XVI; + II pp. + 164 plates, 44 of which are folding (32 are double-size or larger), comprising ca 60 plates with elevations and house plans, 60 with elaborate perspective renderings, and 40 with town plans. Loose as issued in printed, cloth-backed portfolio with ties. Second edition of Garniers's extensive utopian design for an imaginary modern city, characterised by an emphasis on common property (including a large central building where 3000 citisens could meet together) and the rejection of police stations, law courts, jails or churches, all of which Garnier believed would be unnecessary under socialIsm. Architecturally, the scheme is a pioneering program for the use of reinforced concrete construction. In the decades between the first and the second edition, the Cité Industrielle ultimately influenced the architectural and townplanning philosophy of Le Corbusier and other members of the CIAM.
