With 60 Gothic ballads and versified myths, many with German and Scandinavian origin like ”The Sword of Angantyr”, but also from ”Percys Reliques of Ancient English Poetry”, Robert Southey, Walter Scott and others. Includes Lewis’ ”Alonzo the Brave, and Fair Imogine” from the Monk.

A good edition of the Panegyrici, a collection of speeches, based on new MSS material and with still useful comments. Among the speeches are Plinius the younger’s on Trajanus and Latinius Drepanus Pacatus’ on Theodosius. Jean Lievens Gandensis (1546-1599), Belgian theologist and hellenist.

First edition of Vossius’ large latin etymological dictionary, edited posthumously by his son, Isaac Vossius. New editions followed in 1664, 1695 and as late as 1762. G. J. Vossius (1577-1649), author, classical scholar, philologist and theologian. Born near Heidelberg of Dutch parents, he become director of the theological college at Leiden 1615, where from he resigned 1619 under suspicion of heresy caused by his “Historia Pelagiana” published 1618. He became professor at the University of Leiden 1622 and in Amsterdam 1631 and is the father of Isaac Vossius.

Fine copy of the first edition. Descriptons of Busch’s journeys in the western states and the Mississippi Valley, especially in Cincinnati and the Ohio River towns. It also contains a chapter on life among the Shakers and the Mormons. Moritz Busch (1821-99) immigrated to the United States after being disappointed by the 1848-revolution in Europe, but he returned in 1853.

According to Ainsworth ”he is said when on active service as a military surgeon to have used his microscope in the front line”. In this book he presents his ”...novel general classification in which for the first time many histological criteria were employed [...] Léveillé’s primary subdivisions were based on spore characters and many of the lower categories were also differentiated on microscopical features.” Fine provenance. Miles Joseph Berkeley (1803-89) ”The founder of British mycology”, systematist with some 6000 species of fungi being credited to him. Berkeley made very important contributions to the field of plant pathology. He composed the account of native British fungi in Sir W. Hooker’s ”British Flora” (1836) and his most important works are ”Introduction to Cryptogamic Botany” (1857), and his ”Outlines of British Fungology” (1860). He also published a large number of articles on mycology. Theodor (Thore) Magnus Fries (1832-1913) was professor of botany at the University of Uppsala, the son of Elias Fries and the grandfather of Nils Fries.

The German botanist and mycologist Wilhelm Zopf (1846-1909) was from 1883 head of the Cryptogamic laboratory at the University of Halle.

Johann Henric Cohausen (1675-1750I from Hildsheim and bishop of Münster wrote several books about the misuse of tobacco and its negative consequenses.

Worn contemporary calf, rubbed spine with raised bands, crack in hinges. Owner’s Signature of front paste down ”Mary Harris Her Book 1700”, and later of Donald R. O. Thomas 1927. ESTC R13497 for part one, R9748 for part two. The first part lacks the first blank leaf A1. The second part with the leaf ”Licensed, Sept. 26. 1689”. The first collected edition of his poems was published in 1645, and several new editions were publised during the 17th- and 18th-centuries. The second part with the altered ”Maids Tragedy” was published in 1690, of which this is ”... an unauthorized edition, edited by Francis Atterbury, which is condemned in the prefatory note to Waller’s The maid’s tragedy altered” (ESTC). Edmund (or Edmond) Waller (1606-87) was a poet and politician at the court of Charles I. He was arrested after the outbreak of the English Civil War for supporting the Crown, and went into exile to France and Switzerland. A reissue of these two parts was made in 1694 with the title to part one changed to ”with addition of The maid’s tragedy altered”.

First edition of Mallet’s history of Denmark and of its important supplement ”Monumens de la mythologie”, which contains the first French translation of the Edda of Snorre, ”L’Edda des Islandois ou mythologie celtique”, the first ever to a non-Nordic language. The importance of Mallet’s work grew even more with the English translation, with notes and preface by bishop Thomas Percy in 1770, ”Northern antiquities: or a description of the manners, customs, religion and laws of the ancient Danes, and other Northern nations; including those of our own Saxon ancestors. With a translation of the Edda, or system of Runic mythology.” Inspired by it Macphearson wrote his songs of Ossian. The engraved portrait is of the Danish king Fredrik V.Paul Henri Mallet (1730-1807) was a Swiss historian who between 1752 and 1760 worked at the university of Copenhagen. In 1760 he returned to Geneva, and became professor of history. In 1755 he also made a journey through Norway which he published an account of as a fourth part to Coxe’s Travels in Northern Europe.

Dominikanermunken Thomas Mazza försvarar i denna bok om goternas infall i Italien framförallt den medeltida förfalskaren Annius från Viterbo och dennes skrifter, men bygger sin framställning även på Cassiodoros och Prokopios. Ett avsnitt ur boken, om goternas härkomst från Skandinavien, citeras av Johann Peringskiöld i anmärkningarna till Cochlaeus ”Vita Theoderici regis ostrogothorum et italiæ” 1699.

First edition, with 106 hand-coloured engraved plates. Wilhelm’s ”Unterhaltungen aus der Naturgeschichte. Thierreich” was issued in 12 parts between 1792 and 1803. It was continued with Menschen (3 parts), Pflanzenreich (10 parts) and Mineralenreich (2 parts). ”Würmer” are volumes 11-12 in the Thierreich and contains apart from worms also snails, corals, mussels, jellyfish and other marine animals.

Av hävd åtnjöt staden Bremen nästan full självständighet gentemot det omgivande ärkestiftet som den formellt tillhörde. När det stod klart att området i Westfaliska freden skulle komma att tillfalla Sverige fruktade man naturligt nog att detta självbestämmande inte skulle komma att respekteras av svenskarna. Man utverkade då ett frihetsbrev av kejsaren, 1646, i vilket Bremens ställning som fri stad formaliserades. Detta senkomna dokument (som lär ska ha kostat Bremens borgerskap en ansenlig summa) erkändes dock inte av Sverige. Frågan kom att leda till två väpnade konflikter mellan Bremen och Sverige (första och andra Bremiska krigen 1654 respektive 1666) vilka båda ledde till kompromisser till Sveriges fördel, men där Bremens självständighet trots allt bestod. Disponenten vid Rörstrands porslinsfabrik m.m. Gustaf Holdo Stråles (1826-96) stora boksamling såldes till stor del redan 1876 efter tryckt förteckning. Nya försäljningar ägde sedan rum senare samma år, liksom 1887 och 1888. Före sin död sålde han även en samling underhand till K. A. Wallenberg, men trots detta räckte böckerna till ytterligare en auktion på hans efterlämnade boksamling 1897.

Contemporary vellum, somewhat soiled spine and front board. With an anonymous Swiss heraldic bookplate with a rose and two stars and the device ”Jehova Requies Gloriosa”. From the library of Olle Cederlöf. OCLC 905443870. First edition published nearly twenty years after Lydius' death and edited by the famous Dordrecht theologian Salomon van Til (1644-1713). This is a semiotic study of the military practices of the classical antiquity, with plates depicting equipments like shields, helmets, siege engines, war chariots with scythed wheels etc. and a Roman triumphal procession. A Dutch translation was published in 1703. Jacob Lydius (1610-79) was a Dutch theologist and priest in Dordrecht and a learned historical author.

Med Lemiéres musik skall den ha givits i Stockholm 1801-31, och med musik av Åhlström 1862! Dahlgren sätter dock frågetecken kring Åhlström, och det troliga är väl att det är en bearbetning av Åhlström av Lemiéres musik. Tanddoktorn: RISM A503. Klemming 182. Tanddoktorn med text av C. G. Nordforss och musik (till större delen) av Olof Åhlström blev en succé och gavs 76 gånger mellan 1800 och 1825, och den tryckta texten trycktes i två upplagor, den andra något förändrad och förkortad.

Historieprofessorn i Lund Sven Lagerbrings intressanta samling av urkunder och historiska skrifter innehåller bl.a. kommentarer till Dalins Wattuminskningen, kapitel om Messenius skrifter och hans arrestering, om Stobaeus skrifter, “tillökningar til stora rimkrönikan”, “om wetenskapernas förra öde i Swerige”, om “Joh. G. Sparfwenfeld och des correspondance” (med brev från Leibnitz), en gammal berättelse om S. Brita (Birgitta) med några av hennes uppenbarelser, utdrag ur Siward Grubes dagbok. Sven Lagerbring (1707-87), född Bring och adlad Lagerbring 1769 var professor i Lund och Sveriges första moderna historiker, och den som under frihetstiden återupptog publicerandet av historiska handlingar, vilket sedan fortsattes av hans lärjungar Bergius och Gjörwell.
