Lovely copy of the edition by Pieter Burman (1668-1741).

The cover is drawn directly on lithographic film by Alechinsky, and with an original litographed page.

Old tipped-in numbers to the flyleaf. * With a tipped-in armorial bookplate [dated 1722] to the verso of the typegraphical titleleaf: The book has belonged to Alexander Hume-Campbell, 2nd Earl of Marchmont [1675-1740]. The Scottish nobleman was ambassador to Denmark 1715-21.

Illustrated with 40 engraved plates [hereof one foldable] + an engraving of Downing to the titleleaf [complete]. Bound in a contemporary full calf binding. Wear to the extremities of the spine. Corners a bit bumped. Small stain to the upper margin of the title leaf. Hinges a bit weak, but holding firmly. One of the plates with a small tear to the corner, well outside the plate. Overall condition: Very good. * Very nice book on Scotland, originally published in 1774, but already in the fourth and enlarged edition here. The plates show castles, scenic views, animals, antiquities and portraits. This edition is often marked as volume 1 to the spine [as is this copy], because Pennant also published his other books on travels in the north on Great Britain in the same format from 1776 to 1782.

One handwritten page [12 lines]. Dated 26 September 2000. With letterhead from École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales in Paris. Still, a nice copy on good paper. * Second edition [first one published 1790] of this charming account of London.

Illustrated with An engraved frontespiece, a portrait of Frederic August, double-page titleleaf in red and black, 11 plates of coats-of-arms as well as 59 portraits of Saxon Kings. Contemporary full calf binding. Nice copy. * Book on Saxon Kings, lords and heroes from Harderich and onwards. The older portraits are to be taken with a smile - it is hard to make portraits of persons who had died 1500 years before the book was printed.

The Island of Hven in the Sound became Swedish in 1660 and owed its reputation to Tycho Brahe who lived and studied there from 1575 to 1598.
