No spine title. Some edgewear. First woodcut titleleaf with a restoration to the lower part [not affecting the woodcut] and two old stamps. Second woodcut titleleaf with a cut-out, restored with hand drawing in old hand, as well as various old name, one dated 1594 [Nicolaus Forssaeus Andelocen]. Small holes to the margin of the last leaf, not affecting text. * Two parts [of five] of Robert Estienne's great Cicero edition from 1538-39.

Plates with a bit of foxing (mostly to the margins), text leaves only with slight browning and foxing. Slight rubbing to the side paper. Bookplate inserted. * First book edition, first issue with the hook on the left hand on the frontespiece, the two-line errata and 'the Capatin' instead of Captain to the last line of p. 324.

Mig er det som sagt aldrig lykkedes.

The spine has been restored with white cloth and the original vellum backstrip [with a couple of closed cracks] has been reattached, making it a solid and readable copy [unlike many others where the vellum is brittle and the hinges cracked]. Binding a bit rubbed and soiled and with slight edgewear. * Signed by Rackham. Number 21 of 200 numbered copies made for the US [of a total of 775 copies, with 575 copies for the UK].** Beautiful edition of Goldsmith's classic 18th century novel.

Stamp to the titleleaf [sold from a Danish military library]. Near fine. * Nice and extensive work on military drills. Anton, Freyherrn von Zach [1747-1826] was born in Pest, and was part of the Austrian defeat against the French at the Battle of Marengo in 1800m, where he was captured by Napoleon. His further participation in the Napoleonic wars weren't exactly flashing, but he certainly could drill his soldiers!

Spine-strip with tear. * A fine copy of of this crucial archeological treatise: In his article, Christian Jürgensen Thomsen (1788-1865) for the first time establishes a cronological system to view the earliest part of history with a division into Stone Age, Bronze Age and Iron Age. He established the system based on observations of items, not on reading. This fundamental work was published in Danish in 1836, but immediately translated into German by professor Christian Paulsen to have Thomsen's pioneering thesis known by an international audience. Besides establishing a system for archeology, Christian Jürgensen Thomsen became the founder of the Danish National Museum.

Slight foxing. * Fine binding from the Napoleonic era. An Italian tribute to Napoleon who then had been master of Italy since 1797.

Small parts of the top of the spine missing. Spine with superficial cracks. Some dampstaining to the first leaves, a section of leaves in the book, and to the last plates. * Scarce. Oeder [1728-91] wrote this book on Danish botany alongside publishing the most beautiful botanical work of Scandinavia, the renowed Flora Danica [1761-1883]. The plates for the present book are somewhat more modest, but are still called Flora Danica in the top corner.

Slight foxing. * The first official autobiography by Hans Christian Andersen, which was published as part of a German edition of his collected works in 1847. A Danish edition of was not published until 1942; an English, however, already later in 1847. Prior to this autobiography, Andersen had written a private text for the family Collin in Copenhagen, his mentors and supporters through the first difficult years, first published in 1926. 'Das Märchen meines Lebens' for the first time links Andersen's entire production closely to the 'fairy tale' of his life and consolidated his European fame.
