Kirkegaards Antikvariat
kir52852
JRP Ringier Kunstverlag, 2009. 8vo in wraps as issued. Bilingual German / English. 344 pages. Fine copy. 1. ed. A sourcebook on independent art publishing: Since 2001, Christoph Keller's famous archive "Kiosk – Modes of Multiplication" has been exhibited 27 times all around the world, in institutions such as the ICA (London), the Witte de With (Rotterdam), Artists'Space (NY), the Emily Carr Institute (Vancouver), MUDAM (Luxembourg) and some biennials such as Manifesta 4, the 25th Graphic Biennial of Ljubljana and the Istanbul Biennial. Today it contains more than 7.000 publications by approximately 500 independent art publishing projects from non commercial publishers, magazines, fanzines, newspapers, journals, audio- and video-labels, corporate and institutional publishing, etc. The focus has never been set on exhibiting the most interesting individual artists’ publications but rather the whole bandwidth of publishing possibilities, the motivations and strategies of the people "behind the scenes," the editors, publishers, designers, multipliers. On the occasion of the final public presentation of the archive at the Kunstbibliothek, Berlin, which has now taken over the archive as a special collection, this handbook represents an overview and reflection on independent art publishing activities today. It contains statements by the protagonists of this scene, theoretical texts, illustrations, and a broad source-part with comprehensive information on the contributing publishing projects. Published with the Stiftung Preussische Museen zu Berlin in the Christoph Keller Editions series. Awarded in the competition "The most beautiful Swiss books 2009."

Cain, George:
Kirkegaards Antikvariat
kir55678
New York: Dell Paperback, 1972 (1970). 16mo. 185pp. Very Good copy. A searing chronicle of the life of a young ex-convict and heroin addict in 1960’s Harlem, an unsparing portrait of a man who couldn’t free himself from the horrors of addiction .Blueschild Baby takes place during the summer of 1967—the summer of race riots all across the nation; the Summer of Love in the Haight Ashbury; the summer of Marines dying near Con Thien, across the world in Vietnam—but the novel illuminates the contours of a more private hell: the angry desperation of a heroin addict who returns to his home in Harlem after being in prison. First published in 1970, this frankly autobiographical novel was a revelation, a stunning depiction of a marginal figure, marked literally and figuratively by his drug addiction and navigating a predatory underground of junkies and hustlers—and named George Cain, like his author.

Buck-Morss, Susan:
Kirkegaards Antikvariat
kir59780
Cambridge, MA: MIT Press, 2002 (2000). Heavy 8vo in SOFTCOVER. XVI,. 368 pages. With illustrations. Name to inner cover else clean. Very good copy. Developing the notion of dreamworld as both a poetic description of a collective mental state and an analytical concept, Susan Buck-Morss attempts to come to terms with mass dreamworlds at the moment of their passing. The dream of the twentieth century was the construction of mass utopia. As the century closes, this dream is being left behind; the belief that industrial modernization can bring about the good society by overcoming material scarcity for all has been challenged by the disintegration of European socialism, capitalist restructuring, and ecological constraints. The larger social vision has given way to private dreams of material happiness and to political cynicism. Developing the notion of dreamworld as both a poetic description of a collective mental state and an analytical concept, Susan Buck-Morss attempts to come to terms with mass dreamworlds at the moment of their passing. She shows how dreamworlds became dangerous when their energy was used by the structures of power as an instrument of force against the masses. Stressing the similarities between the East and West and using the end of the Cold War as her point of departure, she examines both extremes of mass utopia, dreamworld and catastrophe. The book is in four parts. "Dreamworlds of Democracy" asks whether collective sovereignty can ever be democratic. "Dreamworlds of History" calls for a rethinking of revolution by political and artistic avant-gardes. "Dreamworlds of Mass Culture" explores the affinities between mass culture's socialist and capitalist forms. An "Afterward" places the book in the historical context of the author's collaboration with a group of Moscow philosophers and artists over the past two tumultuous decades. The book is an experiment in visual culture, using images as philosophy, presenting, literally, a way of seeing the past. Its pictorial narratives rescue historical data that with the end of the Cold War are threatened with oblivion and challenge common conceptions of what this century was all about." - Susan Buck-Morss is known for Dialectics of Seeing (1989). "This earlier text brilliantly reconstructed Walter Benjamin's unfinished "Arcades" project (on the consumer culture of Baudelaire's Paris), and established Buck-Morss both as an authoritative commentator on Benjamin and as a major cultural thinker in her own right. Dreamworld and Catastrophe seeks, in effect, to extend Benjamin's dialectical investigations into the imaginary of modern culture to another time and place
