ISOU, ISIDORE. - Cabañas, Kaira M.:
Kirkegaards Antikvariat
kir07805
University of Chicago Press, 2014. Paperback. 179 pages. With illustrations. Fine clean copy. One of the most important avant-garde movements of postwar Paris was Lettrism, which crucially built an interest in the relationship between writing and image into projects in poetry, painting, and especially cinema. Highly influential, the Lettrists served as a bridge of sorts between the earlier works of the Dadaists and Surrealists and the later Conceptual artists. Off-Screen Cinema is the first monograph in English of the Lettrists. Offering a full portrait of the avant-garde scene of 1950s Paris, it focuses on the film works of key Lettrist figures like Gil J Wolman, Maurice Lemaître, François Dufrêne, and especially the movement’s founder, Isidore Isou, a Romanian immigrant whose “discrepant editing” deliberately uncoupled image and sound. Through Cabañas’s history, we see not only the full scope of the Lettrist project, but also its clear influence on Situationism, the French New Wave, the New Realists, as well as American filmmakers such as Stan Brakhage.

Corbett, John:
Kirkegaards Antikvariat
kir59009
Durham & London: Duke University Press, 2015. 8vo. Paperback. XXI, 468 pp. Very good copy, unread. Microgroove continues John Corbett's exploration of diverse musics, with essays, interviews, and musician profiles that focus on jazz, improvised music, contemporary classical, rock, folk, blues, post-punk, and cartoon music. Corbett's approach to writing is as polymorphous as the music, ranging from oral history and journalistic portraiture to deeply engaged cultural critique. Corbett advocates for the relevance of "little" music, which despite its smaller audience, is of enormous cultural significance. He writes on musicians as varied as Sun Ra, P.J. Harvey, Koko Taylor, Steve Lacy, and Helmut Lachenmann; and among other topics, he discusses recording formats, investigates the relationship between music and visual art, dance, and poetry, and with Terri Kapsalis, analyzes the role of female orgasm sounds in contemporary popular music. Above all, Corbett privileges the importance of improvisation; he insists on the need to pay close attention to “other” music, and celebrates its ability to open up pathways to new ideas, fresh modes of expression, and unforeseen ways of knowing.

Stallybrass, Peter. - Jones, Ann Rosalind:
Kirkegaards Antikvariat
kir57527
Cambridge University Press, 2001. Softcover as issued. XIII, 368 pp. With illustrations bw. Very good copy, no name and no markings. 1st edition. From the series Cambridge Studies in Renaissance Literature and Culture, # 38. "During the late sixteenth century 'fashion' first took on the sense of restless change in contrast to the older sense of fashioning or making. As fashionings, clothes were perceived as material forms of personal and social identity which made the man or woman. In Renaissance Clothing and the Materials of Memory Jones and Stallybrass argue that the making and transmission of fabrics and clothing were central to the making of Renaissance culture. Their examination explores the role of clothes as forms of memory transmitted from master to servant, from friend to friend, from lover to lover. This book offers a close reading of literary texts, paintings, textiles, theatrical documents, and ephemera to reveal how clothing and textiles were crucial to the making and unmaking of concepts of status, gender, sexuality, and religion in the Renaissance".

Tsouvalis, Judith:
Kirkegaards Antikvariat
kir58493
Oxford University Press, 2000. Publishers hardcover, w jacket. XII, 227 pages. Very good clean copy. First edition. - "Attitudes in Britain to forests and trees are changing. Plantation forests - the product of the 'strategic reserve of timber' vision that held sway in the early twentieth century, and was turned into a physical reality by the Forestry Commission - are no longer fashionable. Today's forests are required to be sustainable, multi-purpose, and biologically diverse. They are expected to possess a 'spirit of place', be aesthetically pleasing, and help alleviate poverty and social exclusion in cities and remote rural areas. This book traces the changing fortune of forests and trees in Britain and people's changing relations with them. It investigates traditional woodland management practices, and considers how they came to be supplanted by scientific forestry knowledge and methods. It examines the development of the Forestry Commission and its body of foresters, looks at the symbolic function of forests and trees, and assesses the claim that present day forestry has become a postmodern phenomenon. A Critical Geography of Britain's State Forests will prove useful not only to foresters and nature conservationists, but to all those who are interested in how human beings socially and biophysically construct the environment, driven by a constant urge to find their place and meaning within it."

ASHER, MICHAEL. - Peltomäki, Kirsi:
Kirkegaards Antikvariat
kir51661
Cambridge: The MIT press, 2010. 8vo in publishers hardcover, with jacket. X, 222 pages. Illustrated. A hint of wear to upper front corners else clean fine unread attractive copy. 1st edition. Michael Asher (born in 1943), one of the foremost installation artists of the Conceptual art period, is a founder of site-specific practice. - "The first book-length study of this influential artist's work, focusing on the participatory role of the human subject rather than the art object. Michael Asher doesn't make typical installations. Instead, he extracts his art from the institutions in which it is shown, culling it from collections, histories, or museums' own walls. Since the late 1960s, Asher has been creating situations that have not only taught us about the conditions and contexts of contemporary art, but have worked to define it. In Situation Aesthetics, Kirsi Peltomäki examines Asher's practice by analyzing the social situations that the artist constructs in his work for viewers, participants, and institutional representatives (including gallery directors, curators, and other museum staff members). Drawing on art criticism, the reports of viewers and participants in Asher's projects, and the artist's own archives, Peltomäki offers a comprehensive account of Asher's work over the past four decades. Because of the intensely site-specific nature of this work, as well as the artist's refusal to reconstruct past works or mount retrospectives, many of the projects Peltomäki discusses are described here for the first time. By emphasizing the social and psychological sites of art rather than the production of autonomous art objects, Peltomäki argues, Asher constructs experientially complex situations that profoundly affect those who encounter them, bringing about both personal and institutional transformation."

Hegarty, Paul:
Kirkegaards Antikvariat
kir59478
London / New York: Continuum Paperback, 2007. X, 221 pp. Very good copy. Noise/Music" looks at the phenomenon of noise in music, from experimental music of the early 20th century to the Japanese noise music and glitch electronica of today. It situates different musics in their cultural and historical context, and analyses them in terms of cultural aesthetics. Paul Hegarty argues that noise is a judgement about sound, that what was noise can become acceptable as music, and that in many ways the idea of noise is similar to the idea of the avant-garde. While it provides an excellent historical overview, the book's main concern is in the noise music that has emerged since the mid 1970s, whether through industrial music, punk, free jazz, or the purer noise of someone like Merzbow. The book progresses seamlessly from discussions of John Cage, Erik Satie, and Pauline Oliveros through to bands like Throbbing Gristle and the Boredoms. Sharp and erudite, and underpinned throughout by the ideas of thinkers like Adorno and Deleuze, "Noise/Music" is the perfect primer for anyone interested in the louder side of experimental music.

CENDRARS, Blaise:
Kirkegaards Antikvariat
kir55662
New York: Grove Press, 1966. Publishers grey cloth hardcover with unclipped very good dustjacket. 253 pp. A discoloring to first blank page else very good overall and clean. First American edition, 1st printing (stated). "Blaise Cendrars’ last novel is an original and often very funny portrayal of the Parisian criminal underworld of the late 1940s that crackles with the fires of an abundant imagination. Yet To the End of the World is not total invention as, like all Cendrars’ works, it has some basis in real life. The narrative races between a Foreign Legion barracks in North Africa and the theaters, cafes, dosshouses, and police headquarters of postwar Paris. The central character in this roman à clef is Thérèse, a septuagenarian actress who was once the rival of Sarah Berhardt herself. Her passionate affair with a young deserter from the Foreign Legion (in which Cendrars himself served) is interrupted by the murder of a barman and the impact this event has on all their lives. With its bold and colorful supporting cast—a subterranean gallery of ex-legionnaires, theater types, black marketeers, dubious aristocrats, sexual adventurers, and freaks—entwined with numerous subplots and minor themes, To the End of the World amounts to a grandly picaresque adventure. When it appeared in France in 1956, it offered a ready antedote to the sense of negativity and existential futility that pervaded many novels of the era.""Without Cendrars, neither Miller nor Burroughs would have existed.!"

In 1932, Marcel Duchamp published Opposition and Sister Squares Are Reconciled, a collaboration with chess champion Vitaly Halberstadt on endgames in chess. Ernst Strouhal's illustrated study approaches this volume as an "almost utopian treatise on chess endgames" and as a trilingual artist's book. Strouhal playfully yet validly demonstrates how Opposition and Sister Squares are Reconciled by M. Duchamp & V. Halberstadt (1932) not only comprises a rare, almost utopian treatise on chess endgames but is also a unique chess book for artists and an artist’s book for chess players.

kir57113
New York: Grove Press / Bookthrift reprint (1963). Heavy hardcover, with worn jacket. XVIII, 983 pp. Foxing to endpapers and some wavyness to first pages else overall a solid and clean copy. Charming 1960's copy with jacket design by Roy Kuhlman. Komplet udgave af Frank Harris' erindringsværk 'My Life and Loves'.
